Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Seems odd the Padres couldn't get a couple more prospects. Even if they were just average ones.

That's where you decide if you want more quantity of less quality, or 1 of high quality. Obviously we know which way they went. Chances are the Red Sox put the offer out there and had a deadline that if they didn't accept, he would have been off the table and the Padres went with the bird in the hand rather than the 2 that might be in the bush

This.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Author Posted July 15, 2016 "Man, the Blue Jays look unbeatable. Better trade my best pitching prospect for a lefty that sits 91" - Dombrowski I think he gets crushed here, what you think?

admin Site Manager Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Hate to say it, Red Sox have a pretty good team, and stocked farm. I could see them winning another World Series within the next few years. Ortiz leaving is a big loss though.

jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Hate to say it, Red Sox have a pretty good team, and stocked farm. I could see them winning another World Series within the next few years. Ortiz leaving is a big loss though. And losing Ortiz is going to hurt, as nobody can really replace him--and don't assume EE signs with Boston. Other teams are expected to be in the mix along with the Jays, and the Pomeranz deal will drain any funds that could go for EE, as he's arb eligible for 2 more years and expected to command a large raise with his breakout if he keeps it up. Remember, Boston's payroll for next season after the Pomeranz deal is already approaching $200M projected (with benefits), limiting flexibility. This isn't the Dodgers--Boston has limits, and may actually cut payroll next year to offset the overspending this season on Ortiz's retirement. And of course, JBJ, Betts and Bogaerts begin to get expensive next year.. And Boston's farm is hardly stocked--after Moncada, Devers and Benintendi, there are significant question marks, with many of their farm guys projected as org. depth. Most notably, they have very little pitching depth above A+ ball.. and Espinoza being dealt thins it even more.
HealthDream007 Verified Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 One other angle to consider is that this year is the only year that Pomeranz has passed the 100IP mark in a season. He could very easily breakdown and have to spend some serious time on the DL.

He could very easily breakdown and have to spend some serious time on the DL. That's my concern. Of course, this is Dombrowski--a guy who traded 3 good pitching prospects to Seattle for Mark Langston (a deal that hurt the Expos, especially consider one was HOF Randy Johnson--high risk that this deal ends up a similar way if Espinoza pans out. As for Pomeranz, shoulder injuries are a serious risk.. and considering he's in uncharted territory in innings pitched and throws a lot of curveballs, he is at high risk to get hurt.

STLJaysFan Verified Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 At least the Padres were nice enough to let him pitch in the All Star Game in San Diego (as a Padre) before shipping him off to a contender.
2lowitzki Verified Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 I can compare this trade to Dickey-Sydergaard trade.. Although Dickey has been more consistent compared to Pomeranz.

Gotta think they could have gotten multiple solid prospects closer to the major league level if they had waited a bit longer. Maybe they know/don't like something about Pomeranz and they wanted to offload him ASAP.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Nice deal for both squads, Boston must have them fingers crossed on that mess of a shoulder... Padres certainly win long term.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 I think if Preller said to add a couple of throw in team top 20 prospects DD still makes the trade. My thoughts exactly. You atleast want to have some other prospects to sell to the fan base that you can develop and maybe hit on one of them. I don't know how you can be a fan of the San Diego Padres. Its an organization constantly in flux. They are Oakland without the playoff appearances.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 I don't see how this is a bad trade for either side. The Red Sox get better now and their farm could easily take this hit, they just signed one of the best arms in the draft.

You only need to look at the Dickey/Syndergaard trade to understand how it could go wrong for Boston.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Remember when Eduardo Rodriguez was a top of the rotation arm that Baltimore would regret trading forever?

Laika Community Moderator Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Torn labrum incoming for Pomeranz... Trades are subject to medical reviews. Boston wouldn't move Espinoza if Pomz' shoulder was f***ed.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 You only need to look at the Dickey/Syndergaard trade to understand how it could go wrong for Boston. BoSox are trying to win THIS year too. They hit a ton and their pitching sucks. They just added a 2.5 WAR SP for someone who might be really good. Few turn out the way Noah has so far and they are gambling its worth the risk. I think its a good deal for them.

Yeah, this trade is nowhere near the Dickey, Thole for Syndergaard, d'Arnaud, Becerra and Buck trade, suggesting it is absurd. This was a very good deal for both sides, the Jays were raked over hot coals. *shutters* Edit: Man, the Mets flipped Buck for Dilson Herrera, and Becerra's having a good season, and is still just 20. Proceed with caution... http://www.nj.com/mets/index.ssf/2015/06/why_the_mets_won_the_ra_dickey_trade.html
