HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 if the coaching staff is not going to be shaken up, then what can the Jays brass possibly do? Because rationally, it looks like they can't do anything but hope they get better.

Trade for bullpen help in July Expect the offense to get better on its own because it certainly should Pray that the starters remain decent and/or Hutch can make a run in the majors

intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 I'd consider firing Gibby. His game plan of pop ups, ground balls and strikeouts just isn't working.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 The only man who would ever hire John Gibbons to manage a baseball team this decade is in Los Angeles right now. His time is numbered. It's just a matter of when Shapiro wants to pull the trigger.

But I also know we do worse. I don't think it's the right move now to can him. This team isn't underchieving because of him and the players have to figure this one out talent wise. The fact that the lineup shakeup was the players idea and not his (he said earlier he would not do it) shows how dumb he can be.
nextyear Verified Member Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 I think one of the biggest problems that this team has, is that hitters will let a (called) strike 3 go by if it is 2 inches out of the strike zone and often get called looking in important situations; Jimmy Paredes showed in the 11th inning last night how to protect the strike zone, he didn't take ball 4 until he was sure it was well outside the strike zone. I have also see Darwin Barney foul off pitch after pitch with 2 strikes and balls too close to take. To make things worse, Tulowitzki and Martin have even been taking strike 3's looking, in the middle of the strike zone. Maybe this is something that can be easily solved by the Blue Jay batters. For the fans, it is as frustrating as watching Donald Trump talk about foreign relations.

They say "how can you sit there and watch the 3rd strike!!!" - completely oblivious to how hard it is to hit in the majors. The same people often complain that all NBA players don't shoot 95% from the free throw line. The answer is - don't listen to fans or people in general. Save the aggravation.

Not sure if that was an insult, but either way you missed the point. A batter can't hit something unless they swing their bat. There are situations where taking a called strike just off the plate (say the first hitter, who is a weak hitter) is a good chance to take (the chance is that the umpire will call it correctly). As Dave Van Horne of the Expos would often say after a called strike 3 looking in an important situation, "that was too close to take". Edited May 20, 2016 by nextyear

When you're facing elite pitchers, players will often eliminate certain pitches, or certain locations because it's simply too hard to cover everything. Given how hard seemingly everyone throws out of the bullpen these days, I think you're seeing this more often. I'm sure you'll argue "but what about right down the middle!"....although I don't think that's happened as much as you think. The casual fans says "that's too close to take" as if players should be able to cover every pitch, in every location, including a few inches off the plate in all directions when the guys throwing 96 MPH. Easier said than done man. I guess they could cut their swing WAYYY down to do that...but that might be counterproductive vs. assuming the ump is going to do his job correctly more often than not. This sounds like something Goose Gossage would promote...

But what's the point, it is just baseball and if some posters on this forum don't understand the term "protecting the plate", then it just doesn't matter. I guess the umpires just need their own pitch-trackers like fans watching on TV. This is what I get for trying to have a legitimate discussion.

This sounds like something Goose Gossage would promote... I think you should provide stats. Your premise is that the Blue Jays are not taking any more "called strike 3's looking" than other teams. Basically, you are saying that pitchers are so good now, that hitters can no longer protect the plate. In my opinion, professional MLB hitters like Martin and Tulowitzki are expected to do much better than they have been and not look dumb at the plate by looking at strike 3, over, and over, and over again. Even casual fans can see that some players have a much better contact rate than others with 2 strikes. Donaldson was known for being good at hitting with 2 strikes last year. Maybe Zaun is right, some Blue Jay hitters are going up to the plate guessing too much instead of swinging at the pitches that they are getting.

I get the term protect the plate especially if the umps been calling a certain spot all night. From what I've seen though JB and JD do seem to be right about a lot of the balls against them that are being called strikes. No point in protecting the plate if you're right.

Not sure why so many people are getting upset over this lol. Sanchez is an extreme ground ball guy so you lessen the impact a little bit.

I just don't think we are in a position in the standings to put a 4 WAR player on the bench for a scrub.

I just don't think we are in a position in the standings to put a 4 WAR player on the bench for a scrub. He was also hurt last week so might still feel the effects from it. In the last week he's been a horrible hitter so its not like he is playing at a 4 Win pace lately. If the training staff tells Gibby "hey this player is showing signs of fatigue and should get a day off to help his performance" I don't see why people would be upset. Gibby knows Pillar is the best option in CF and isn't going to rest him for the hell of it.

He sat a start over the catch he made against LAD that hurt him and we had an off day last week. His bat was hot and has cooled off badly the last couple weeks. I have irrational dislike for Zeke (he has been ok but he is so bad on D)
