Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 Drew Storen might have cost himself 20+ million this season.
TheGrandslamMan Verified Member Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 AA quit on the team so I don't think it plays much into what's going on The players all realize he got iced out.
Belliss101 Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 Was hoping they wouldn't get totally blown out. Still doesn't change the fact that it's a terrible night for Toronto sports, regardless of what I thought or didn't think. Meh, I guess you're right.
500LevelSTH Verified Member Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 really, how close or hard could the decision between Osuna and Storen been coming out of spring training for the closer...can't believe it was even a doubt about it...
TheGrandslamMan Verified Member Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 The Revere trade continues to sting even more. I'm not impressed with Shapiro. First this and then he wants to trade Saunders for Jay Bruce of all players?

Hindsight is a great thing ain't it?
Praxis Verified Member Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 13-2 and 12-2 isn't baseball, it's annihilation and Dickey is up tomorrow. This could get out of hand really quickly.
metafour Verified Member Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 How much do you think the clean sweep of the front office had to do with the morale of the team going into the season? After all from what I've read they pretty much insulted Bautista and Encarnacion with their contract offers... Not good to have the 2 start players feeling slighted. I'd think there would have had to be a feeling after the additions made last year of "wow AA really has our backs". Having a new front office coming in and doing things their way could turn a lot of players off and ruin some of the morale. Wasn't the team trying to scrap together their own money just a year prior in an attempt to get Ervin Santana signed? I seriously doubt these guys are devastated by AA leaving. We started last season with an absurd amount of Rookies either starting and/or playing pivotal roles (Pompey, Norris, Sanchez, Castro, Osuna, Travis)...AA didn't "make additions" until the trade deadline.

It seems more likely that Bautista and Encarnacion saw how much Martin, Tulowitzki and Price were making and decided they should also have big contracts. It is probably human nature but no good for team morale. Many large companies have rules to discourage employees from disclosing pay rates for this very reason but that isn't possible in the MLB.

Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 The players all realize he got iced out. He was offered to stay on a GM...no matter what you think it was his choice to leave or stay. He chose to leave

First this and then he wants to trade Saunders for Jay Bruce of all players? Saunders is made of glass and Shapiro was just looking for a power bat to replace Bautista. It wasn't that bad of an idea, have you seen Saunders' defence?
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 Anyone else watch to the bitter end? Nah, it hurts too much to see the team flopping like this. I mean i'll still watch every day, but sometimes I have better things to do than watch a blowout. There's still 100+ games left.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 Yes the players are depressed over losing AA. that explains it. It's also all Shapiro's fault despite 95% of this team being the guys he inherited. Like I said, AA dipped at the right time. Don't think for one second he didn't know what he was doing.
metafour Verified Member Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 I'm not impressed with Shapiro. First this and then he wants to trade Saunders for Jay Bruce of all players? Shapiro is the President you tard. You really think he's orchestrating trades for relievers? Really? He let Antonetti make blockbuster trades on his own in Cleveland (the Ubaldo Jimenez trade) that he later would admit he would not have made had he been the GM. This storyline about him being some secret puppet-master is growing old. He's not running the team from behind the scenes, no matter how badly you want to assume so.
TheGrandslamMan Verified Member Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 The Revere trade was good. How was he supposed to know Storen was going to lose velocity? Hindsight is a great thing ain't it? I don't like trading several years of control of a good outfielder for one year of a reliever. Revere would compliment this grip it and rip i/all or nothing offense nicely. I guess you had to make a move of some sort though. I would have liked to have moved JB to 1B and have Saunders/Pillar/Revere in the field but that would have caused problems too. You still need to get a better return for Revere.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 13-2 and 12-2 isn't baseball, it's annihilation and Dickey is up tomorrow. This could get out of hand really quickly. That's 25 runs in 2 games to the team that came in as the worst offense in baseball lol
TheGrandslamMan Verified Member Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 Anyone else watch to the bitter end? listening from the TV in the other room.

True. I think AA redeemed himself in their eyes though. I still don't think insulting JB/EB with low-ball contract offers sets a good tone going into a new season while the team plays under new front-office management.
Praxis Verified Member Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 It hurt at first to see AA leave, but over time I've come to see just how much the farm system and organizational depth was completely depleted under his tenure. Unless Beeston had stayed and been able to persuade Rogers to fork out more money on the free agent market in order to cover the deficiencies on this squad (that are becoming more and more obvious), this season was likely going to unfold in the way we're seeing it now and I am starting to believe that AA saw this coming and split. I don't envy Shatkins; their work is really cut out for them.

I still don't think insulting JB/EB with low-ball contract offers sets a good tone going into a new season while the team plays under new front-office management. Shatkins probably don't even want Bautista/Edwin back next year. Gotta start rebuilding somewhat in 2017. That means no large contracts to anyone over age 30.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 Anyone else watch to the bitter end? to the end yes...don't get the bitter bit though
metafour Verified Member Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 I still don't think insulting JB/EB with low-ball contract offers sets a good tone going into a new season while the team plays under new front-office management. How were they insulted? David Ortiz has been playing out the entire back end of his career on 1-2 year deals. Adrian Beltre literally just signed a 2-year $36 million extension, and unlike Bautista he not only can still play defensively, he's one of the best at his position. Yet you think that we're low-balling Bautista and EE? Get real.
TheGrandslamMan Verified Member Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 You do f***ing realize that Revere is the 2nd worst hitter in baseball with over 40 PA's this year. He's been injured most of the year. He just came back, I'm not gonna make any judgement based on 47 PA's. Look at his career stats for a better understanding of his ability.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 You ever watch any Reds games? Trust me, Bruce is probably even worse in the field. At least he stays healthy enough to be in field.

That means no large contracts to anyone over age 30. I can't argue with this. Either they are declining faster than anyone could have guessed or are refusing to adjust to the pitching. Their approach at the plate probably won't be consistent with what the FO wants to do going forward.
