Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Time to move Cecil out of high leverage situations for a game or two until he sorts this garbage out. lol holy f***. Live by the seat of your pants much?
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Guys, Cecil wasn't good. Like, two whole times. Trade this POS immediately.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 I don't recall this happening. last year same type of s***, bro.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Guys, Cecil wasn't good. Like, two whole times. Trade this POS immediately. He's not advocating a trade, just saying that other pitchers should be favoured in high-leverage situations over Cecil right now. That is defensible, as Cecil has looked like hot garbage in 4(?) of his appearances so far. Why should we let Cecil keep blowing games when we can let him pitch in low-leverage situations until he finds his stuff?

Because barring some kind of ailment or sudden skill decline, we know that Brett Cecil is a really good reliever. Even the best have their s***** stretches. Overreacting to tiny samples is exactly what one should aspire not to do.

I'd rather use Cecil vs LHH with his current stuff than Gavin Floyd or Arnold Leon.

I'd rather use Cecil vs LHH with his current stuff than Gavin Floyd or Arnold Leon. Yeah there's no plan B really. They could start giving Floyd a bit more leverage but other than that, there's no a whole lot to be down with the bullpen role. Cecil will start doing Cecil things sooner than later. Storen is more worrisome.

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Idiotas, estúpidos, imbéciles. Cecil is our best bullpen arm. He will be ok. Colabello is the main problem here; he's now the true Colabello, the DFA Colabello that we knowing from the past.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Encouraging things: Chavez and Floyd have looked pretty good so far (except for the grand slam to Holt)
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 I'm not sure how you can sit and say Cecil is fine but Storen isn't. They both have good track records I linked to the reason why.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Thing is there is no other Lefty on the roster. I'd rather use Cecil vs LHH with his current stuff than Gavin Floyd or Arnold Leon. I'm not opposed to this. Surely Cecil throws side sessions, and if he's also off there then management should more fluid with the pecking order in games until he rights himself. The great thing about Cecil is that I'm fine putting him up against pretty much anybody, lefty or no (the lack of other lefty options complicates things, admittedly). But if he's tossing s*** at the moment, shuffle the deck. Chavez and Floyd have both been pretty good. The depth is there. Didn't Cecil lose his closer gig after a single series last year? Amazing how Gibby is willing to make some moves (Cecil was pre-mature, IMO, but ultimately for the best) but doesn't budge at all on others. Donaldson hitting second was the best move he ever made when Martin wasn't getting it done. I also recall Cecil being s*** last April. Not that the losses that result from his poor outings don't suck, just that there's more reason for optimism than hysterical panic.

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 I linked to the reason why. Ok... Storen sucks because he hasn't found his fastball yet, and Cecil sucks because he hasn't found his curve yet. They both have the track records that say they will likely find their stuff and provide 1 WAR each.

Last year Cecil made a slight mechanical adjustment after being taken out of the closers role. Maybe he needs more adjusting...
youngtea Verified Member Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Our bullpen sucks and we all knew it before the season started. The only bright spot in our bullpen after Osuna was cecil and he is s***ing the bed. So yeah our bullpen sucks more than expected.

Declining fastball velo is about the most worrisome red flag there is in a pitcher who's actually pitching. It will be a concern with Storen unless/until he's back up to the mid 90s.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 We'll start pillaging mate, as soon as tomorrow!! I know this is going to happen if we stay healthy. This team is just too good to be 3-5. Right now we are playing like ass - since Jose called out to end Game 3 on the slide - 2nd f***ed pick off attempt @ 2B costs runs - Cecil walk and a dink into LF costs run - striking out at a rate we won't sustain thankfully - wasting a ton of decent starts from our rotation etc etc. Who didn't see that McCann HR coming if Sanny threw him a FB in? Argh. Today is the first day of the rest of our season. We win this series.

I'm pretty sure that just a couple weeks ago most agreed that this was one of the best and deepest the Jays have had on paper in recent memory.

It appears Storen tinkers with his mechanics a lot. I remember watching videos of his leg drive and he used little to no leg kick at all. This season, I see a high leg kick and I wondered what's up. After a little youtubin' I see a video uploaded in 2011 he had the high leg kick and no leg kick in video uploaded 2012 (for the same company). high leg kick - low leg kick - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZKvJY6gDfg Here's another article on some significant mechanical changes he made - https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/nationals-journal/wp/2013/11/22/inside-drew-storens-turnaround/ I don't know exactly what this means (possibly nothing), but I'm a tad worried that what we see is what we're going to get.

Regardless of mechanics, there's no precedent of him registering velocities as low as he has this year so yeah I don't know if it's really meaningful though it is certainly interesting. Maybe he can do a little better with some tinkering in the delivery but you have to figure there's an underlying strength issue. Hopefully he simply gets stronger by May or something. I'm certainly not writing him off but I don't think it makes sense to be unconcerned.
Governator Community Moderator Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Storen's velocity is a concern imo. We might as well just bring back Casey Janssen.
Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
