KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 That would make total sense...if we weren't competing right now for a WS ring. But I don't think it's a no brainer that he comes in and produces. The guy is not squaring up anything right now. Sure he has a .345 OBP but he also has a .363 SLG. That's a hard trick to pull off and it's not good. It's not crazy to think he comes up and goes 0 for everything and you wasted an option year on a guy you knew wasn't performing well in the first place. If you assume that his performance translates to the MLB perfectly than best case scenario he gives you a very empty but relatively high OBP but more likely he gives you even less than that.
spats Verified Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 I think its more that they see Pompey as a valuable player and a good piece for the future and want him to learn how to do things properly in AAA. I think it's more of a front office issue. I talked to Pompey's dad at a Bison's game last year ( I had met him in Phoenix at an AFL game) and he mentioned that he was sending Dalton to Florida to work with Mickey Brantley...left the club for a few days. I'm sure that didn't sit well with Jays brass. Brantley was not working for the Jays at the time..it was more like private instruction.

I get that. His SLG is disappointing and a 106 wRC+ in AAA isn't exciting. We could use the speed and the OBP, assuming he can translate those numbers. At least his K rate is under 20%. The issue has been compounded by Zeke, Pillar and Jose all being out; Saunders and Melvin both slumping and Saunders just being bad defensively. Is it worth an option year to find out with Dalton in a season where they have an excellent chance to win? Apparently it isn't.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Saunders seems a lot better in RF than LF. When Bautista is back I'd just have him DH and leave Saunders in right. His career numbers show he's always been better in RF too although the sample is small.

He honestly seems like a really bad outfielder in general. I hate watching him out there.

Shatkins doesn't care that much about a WS ring this season ... if it happens, it happens, good ... if it doesn't, it doesn't, fine. It should be Alex's ring anyway. Shatkins wants to win when they'll get (and have earned) most of the credit.

jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 Tonight's lineup Travis 2B Donaldson 3B Encarnacion 1B Saunders DH Tulowitzki SS Martin C Ceciliani LF Upton CF Carrera RF Lake DFAd.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 ^ makes no sense to me. Shatkins brought back one ace and pretty much stole another one off the FA pile. They made a nothing trade for what seems to be an elite set-up man. They made a nothing rule-5 claim for an above average 7th inning guy, who could even be a starter next year. They recovered from a mutually-failed trade with Washington for an RP as well as the complete collapse of one of the league's best lefties and still ended up putting together an above average pen on the fly. It's in fact several of the pieces that AA picked up that have held this already first-place team back from being in a more decisive first place: Tulowitzki, Martin, Dickey, etc. Bautista has done pretty much nothing and Cecil has been a disaster. But Shatkins have somehow (and luckily, though AA was no stranger to luck) built a competitive ballclub despite all this. I'm not saying AA doesn't deserve credit for building this core, nor does he deserve criticism for some of his elite assets putting out down years, but I don't agree at all that Shatkins are simply riding his coattails and waiting for their turn.

That 7-9 is ugly but the OF defense without Saunders is better and at least Zeke can bring his empty .260 BA to the lineup which sadly is an improvement over what Smoak is doing lately. I can't wait for September. I'd bring up a shitload of position players. Montero, Pompey, Goins, and Kratz at least. Probably Burns too. Loup, Shulz and Barnes would all be getting calls too.

The third ace was converted from the bullpen when a lot of people had pretty much written that guy off as a starter.

intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 The third ace was converted from the bullpen when a lot of people had pretty much written that guy off as a starter. Which is also a byproduct of them being adept at putting together a pen. But before anyone says otherwise: yes, Chavez and Storen were disasters and Floyd got hurt, but the point remains that they picked up previously reliable arms in order to boost overall pitching depth. And when the BP was failing, they made quality moves to patch up some holes. I honestly can't find a good reason to say Shatkins haven't done a very good job with the circumstances they were handed. All they needed to do this past off season was boost the pitching, given how good the lineup was. Well it's been the quality of the pitching moves that kept the team in contention while the "sure thing" offense was still deciding whether or not to show up for work.

For the record, the Estrada and Happ signings were conceived of and negotiated by Tony LaCava, according to Shapiro. I'm sure he had some influence, but I hate to see good work by loyal and longtime executive get overlooked.

With his speed, Zeke probably provides as much as Pompey can be expected to provide. Both players seem to have had issues with their concentration but Zeke seems to have turned it around and Pompey seemed to hit rock bottom not that long ago with that nightmare game.
