Governator Community Moderator Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 Cola went 2-4 with a homer? Nice! Maybe he can come up here and give us a proper platoon with Smoak fatcowgibby
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 fatcowgibby Lol if he hits I could care less what his past is the more offence the better. Maybe he does well enough to be a trade peice next season
Governator Community Moderator Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 Lol if he hits I could care less what his past is the more offence the better. Maybe he does well enough to be a trade peice next season Honestly, he'll probably hit well in AAA but that's aside the point. I think if they start relying on him as part of the line up it's a mistake come postseason. Also, they'd arguably get more value with one of Carerra/Pompey in RF and Bautista/EE splitting DH/1B.

I agree with you but: A) I have a feeling Gibby won't do the whole Carerra in RF/Bautista at DH/EE at 1B Cola isn't eligible for the postseason so might as well use him as much as you can to give people rest. We also have a thin bench anyways C) also lots of people made the great point of Carerra's value off the bench. If cola puts on a good display not only do we get a speedy player that can bunt off the bench but we have cola as a trade piece next season maybe. There's lots of factors here Once again this is of course if he's mashing in AAA and he goes back to his .320 + .400+ BABIP + decent pop. If he turns to s*** again then we shouldn't even give him a look in September

I believe a caught PED user who was respected because he beat the odds can just GTFO regardless of his predicted minor contributions. They could release him today and I wouldn't care. If they want Colabello I think he'll be a September call up and they should bring up Pompey now so at the very least he'll be postseason eligible.

There's lots of factors here Unless their trade partner is Dave Stewart, I really don't see what Colabello could bring us in the offseason, a throw in at best?? I'm not undervaluing Carerra, I think him and Pompey together could make for a great bench / RF option. Swap out Burns & Lake with Bautista & Pompey and I think we're stronger everywhere. When Saunders hits that double in a tie game in the 8th, putting Pompey out there would be wonderful. Sadly, as you mentioned I don't think Gibby has the balls to move to Bautista to 1B / DH role though.

But yes that's what I'm saying I don't think Gibby will be able to force Bautista into DH if he wants to play RF to put up his value

If he can come back and hit like a crazy that alone will get him the money he wants. Teams already know that he is capable of playing the OF, if you throw him at 1B I can only see that helping his value. You'd have a backup 1B, 3B, OF and is one of the best hitters in the game. EDIT: The Jays could easily say when Bautista comes back that they want him to play 1B to get him off the turf to help his toe get to 100% or some sorta BS like that.
CHRIS Verified Member Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 It will be interesting to see what happens with Cola. I'd cut him personally, but if he somehow makes it back to the majors, then it's going to have to come at the expense of somebody. When everybody is healthy, does the decision become Cola or Goins, or is there enough room for both? I'm assuming they're not going to do something like egregious like punting Barney or Devo somewhere.

puphood Verified Member Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 What is the latest with Bautista in rehab of the toe. When he comes back I see him DHing, EE to 1st. Smoak doing what he does best on the bench. All and all this is going to be an improvement from what is being fielded now. Still need SP big time.........After the Smoak signing I have become resigned to the fact that we loose EE in 2017........

Smoak hasn't been his replacement up to this point so I don't see how that changes, EE is not very good at 1B and can't possibly do that over the course of a season. If anything it suggests Bautista is gone who would most certainly would be the future 1B.

Smoak's defense is really overrated, he has nice hands but his range is crap. -16 DRS his career and UZR has him at avg.

He's not a cornerstone.

You could argue it's a bad signing as a first basemen sure, but I don't see how it impacts EE's DH role other than spending $4MM annual.
CHRIS Verified Member Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 There's no reason to cut him, he has options. Sorry, meant cut from the major league roster; i.e., I wouldn't just give him back a major league roster spot simply because he had one before the suspension. Poor wording on my part.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 Also I have asked several times what other 4million dollar first basemen are out there that would be better then SMOAK ??? Crickets!!!
CHRIS Verified Member Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 Also I have asked several times what other 4million dollar first basemen are out there that would be better then SMOAK ??? Crickets!!! The questions... - Is there a better first baseman available for $4 million dollars than Justin Smoak? - Is spending $4 million dollars on Justin Smoak a wise use of resources? ...do not (necessarily) hold the same meaning. For me, the main questions to ask are: - Is Justin Smoak's value likely to rise significantly higher the closer we get to the end of the season? - Does the benefit of Justin Smoak's "cost certainty" outweigh the loss in flexibility of looking to fill his roster spot next season? I guess we are facing the possibility of a future without Encarnacion and Bautista, both who would could fill a 1B/DH role, and Justin Smoak semi-fills those roles, but it just seems odd to me to lock him into a roster spot and take that money off the table.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 Also I have asked several times what other 4million dollar first basemen are out there that would be better then SMOAK ??? Crickets!!! 4 mil a year for Smoak is not that bad, I agree with you. Steve Pearce came off a terrible year last year, truly just an atrocious year, and he got 4 million. LoMo had a bad year as well. He got 4 million. I imagine Smoak would have got at least 4 million. After Napoli and Moss he's probably the third best 1B on the market next season. Smoak just needs a platoon partner. I think the aformentioned Pearce would be a good fit. I get the concerns about even rostering Smoak and committing 2 years two him like that. But the team has a ton of FAs next year and we won't be able to perfectly fill all the holes that they leave. Patching up one of those holes now makes sense.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 Steve Pearce is back at 154 wRC smh
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 Steve Pearce is back at 154 wRC smh Yeah that 4 million was well spent but I was just trying to identify what 4 mill gets you. And last year it got you a 33 year old Steve Pearce coming of a wOBA of .308.

Just wondering.

Yeah I mean it's possible although a team may just not even want Cola or Goins unless they value them as org depth. But last year we traded 3 bums in A-ball for Mark Lowe. We also got Grilli for nothing this year.
CHRIS Verified Member Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 Can we get any bullpen help trading Cola or Goins and a prospect for some bullpen help? Just wondering. I think most of the bullpen help that gets moved will be coming from non-contending teams, which likely don't have a want or a need for Cola or Goins. I guess it's possible that Goins might be attractive to a contending team in need of middle infield help, but they'd also likely have to have an abundance of bullpen arms to part with. Off the top of my head, not sure who that might be.

Velo dropped almost 3 MPH and he's been one of the worst pitchers in the Majors. Interesting that out of all of the prospects the Jays traded last year only Hoffman's stock has gone up. Almost every other prospect has only been worse since the trades which is remarkable considering how many prospects were traded.

I guess it's my own stupid fault, though; I should have bought my tickets for all of these giveaway games at the beginning of the season.
