burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted March 29, 2016 Author Posted March 29, 2016 I know others have pointed out what an insufferable prick you are, but I'd like to add to it. Somehow Sanchez making the rotation automatically means that Chavez has zero value to this team? He could easily be an Alex Colome type for the Jays this year. Not to mention the value he holds at the deadline, when this teams needs are better known. That's without calculating the other side in Hendriks. I don't mind someone pointing out that they called a trade to be a bad one when it becomes a bad one (I do it all the time with the Marlins trade) but to start patting yourself on the back before anyone throws a pitch is completely Grant-like. No need for name calling. I like Chavez as the pitcher and still do. I just think you could have signed a guy like Petit, Cahill or Blanton for 4-6 Million instead of losing Hendriks to pay Chavez 4 million for the same role. Those guys would have provided depth just like Chavez will this season and you could have kept Hendriks has 3 more years of control after this year.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 Great segment on MLB Network this morning. New interviews with Sanchez and commentary. Hopefully they post it later today for online listening. They had the Jays segment on MLB Tonight's 30 in 30 yesterday. Lots of Jays content, Bautista/Donaldson/Storen/Sanchez/Gibbons, etc, etc... was good.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 Basically. And while the inverted W is a bit of a red herring and it's possible to actually have that arm action and good timing, Aaron Sanchez has the bad arm action and it results in bad timing. He has an increased injury chance, which will be compounded by starting. Why doesn't anyone else talk about this? I understand the inverted W isn't a guarantee injury, but as you've pointed out, when you couple it with arm action and bad timing - it's a recipe for disaster. Does nobody talk about this because: 1. It's such an inexact science that most have concluded it's too difficult to predict - some pitchers simply only have so many bullets 2. I don't understand this, so let's ignore it.

Sanchez does have risk factors, but he made also be made of more durable material.... who knows.

Sanchez does have risk factors, but he made also be made of more durable material.... who knows. I hear you - I just find the topic interesting. I wonder if the Jays acknowledge his timing sucks and whether they are trying to make improvements - or if they just say screw it, if he breaks down he breaks down...and is this approach different from team to team. Do some teams target pitchers with certain mechanics (which they believe are superior). I mean we're analysing the crap out of spin rates and such now and teams are doing a lot of research on what's causing arm injuries that I'm sure this is happening to some extent. Pitching is the most valuable position in baseball and the injuries are the most fascinating in all of sports, so you know there's people out there looking to break the code as there's extreme value and money to be had. Maybe it's all a little premature right now - which is why we don't hear much about it. Or maybe it's because in most comment sections, people are claiming Hutch should be on this team because he was 11-2 at home last year and thus is an asset to the Jays (and thus most coverage on this topic would fall on deaf ears).
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 (edited) Why doesn't anyone else talk about this? Some people do. Teams care about it. There are actual academics that study it. It's a rather nebulous topic though. The science is thick and not easily accessible. The science isn't conclusive on a lot of things. The effects also aren't binary - you're talking about someone's risk of TJS rising from 30% to 38% (or something like that) if they have specific mechanical issues. So the degree of risk in most decisions is probably outweighed by the potential benefits of, say, having someone produce as a SP for a few years vs. pitching in the bullpen. Mostly people don't talk about it because they don't know what they're talking about, plainly. So it's a good thing that it's not discussed all that much IMO. There's little worse than someone on Twitter s***ing out still pictures and predicting catastrophic injuries. I only talk about it because I am an expert in the field. Edited March 29, 2016 by Laika
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 You can't say for sure what the future holds. The Nats would probably want a do-over on holding out Strasburg a couple years ago. If you don't even try Sanchez as a SP, then he's a RP. If you try Sanchez as a SP and his arm explodes he just rehabs for a year. Then he's a RP. Might be different for someone like Osuna who already has 1 TJ. But didn't Hudson get 2 TJs and is still a good reliever. I just think the chasm in value between a MLB SP and a RP is still large enough to justify the risk. I agree with the risk. However, re: 2nd TJ surgeries....it didn't work out so well for Kyle Drabek, who's Sanchez has some similarities to. Beachy's had it twice - he's done, Jarrod Parker likely is too. Luebke is working his way back after his 2nd TJ - he might be effective as a reliever (although Pitt is releasing him I heard). I don't think you want to have it twice...Hudson took a long time to return FWIW.

93 Jays Verified Member Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 Excited to see what this kid has got over the long haul. Just hope they're able to stretch him out properly and that when he returns to the pen, we still have healthy options to replace him. At the very least, hopefully they'll have lots of bait come deadline time to fill any holes. Lord knows SP is at a premium come deadline time. This team sets up well.

I won't be happy if Jays trade more youth for a rental again. And doubt Shatkins will do it.
