glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Yeah I don't think Floyd cares about an innings limit. Either he will pitch the whole season or he'll get hurt. One more major injury and his career's probably done anyway, and he's gotten hurt pitching far less in the last three years, so what does he have to lose, really? Just go out there and pitch as best as he can and whatever happens will happen. The team will have to be careful with their younger pitchers because they have more long term value, but Floyd is a different story.
Nafro Verified Member Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Jim's on a crusade. I hear those always turn out well.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Floyd is my 5th starter because he'll be the first injury and unavailable if pitching out of AAA. Sanchez starts in AAA and comes in when Floyd or someone else is injured. People talk about how Sanchez will have innings limit, what about Floyd? Hes thrown less innings in like 4 yrs combined than Sanchez last year?? I don't think any Jays starters will have inning limits. Its such a dumb thing to have a pre-determined cap for how many innings a pitcher should throw. Stroman won't have any inning limits this year and I doubt anyone else will either.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 With the emergence of Floyd and then Sanchez actually looking like a viable SP candidate, that Hendricks for Chavez trade is looking like a huge dud. Traded 4 years of a really good reliever for 1 year of a longman.

That being said SP depth shouldn't be taken for granted either, just look at the Dodgers.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Yeah, last year people were saying the same basic thing about Estrada. Chavez this year and Estrada last year are similar assets and in fact Chavez is coming off a better season than Estrada was. That being said, Lind last year and Hendriks this year are very different assets. The trades aren't really all that comparable.

Traded 4 years of a really good reliever for 1 year of a longman. Hated at the time and hate it even more now. Hendriks in the pen would mean Sanchez starting either in MLB or AAA. I would have understood if the move was made in January if the team didn't have much depth but they paid a ridiculous amount so early in the offseason when you didn't need to. And next year Hendriks could have closed when the team loses Cecil and Storen to FA.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Yeah, I'm still not feeling that one. Me either the only thing that gives me peace is that we will at least have 2 pitchers that can come up and start who are better then the Redmonds, Wangs, Rogers, Laffeys, Mills and so on that we relied on for depth in the past. If someone goes down we won't have a complete dud coming up.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Hey, if that's the biggest mistake of the offseason, that's livable.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Unless Floyd pitches 6+ IP, with 7 K, 0 BB, and 0 R in his next start, Sanchez pretty much has this, and Floyd will be the long man.

I'm down with this. No reason the set up can't be altered later. I'm still pretty skeptical of Sanchez but I have no problem being unbiased for a few April starts.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 They'll both be in the rotation. Estrada makes me nervous right now. highly doubt we see that. Estrada seems on track to start and they can skip a starter through the first turn if need be with the off day.

That being said SP depth shouldn't be taken for granted either, just look at the Dodgers. That's my take. I'm shocked so many of you are against having ample SP'ing depth when failure of our starting pitchers is the most likely thing to derail the 2016 Blue Jays. That said - I agree they may have mis-read the market a bit. They got Chavez before re-signing Estrada or signing Happ. If either of those guys don't sign here and we pass up Chavez, we're looking at Sanchez/Floyd as our 4/5 with Hutch as our #6 and nothing behind him. That would be a terrible position to be in.
bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Can we just kick Dickey into the bullpen/spot start role for floyd?

If it came to it he probably could throw for 4 or maybe even 5 innings. Against KC in the playoffs he had a fantastic multi inning game.

I like having Chavez around for depth purposes, but if he spends a good chunk of the year in the pen then it would make the trade a lot worse. They guessed right on the SP market, but may have underestimated the relief market. Whatever. As mentioned, if that's the worst decision they made this winter, it's forgivable. Chavez will probably still be needed in the rotation at some point.

closetjaysfan Verified Member Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 Id be ok with the Jays running 6 starters at the beginning of the season in an extended competition for the 5 spot (or until someone gets hurt). I may be mistaken but isnt this what played out with Estrada last season before Norris got sent down?

Estrada took over when Norris was demoted in May I think...

Teams are actually more likely to run a 4 man rotation early on in the season because of all the off days.

Other than dickey, who's a lock for 200 ip, I'd bet at least 2 out of the rest of the staff won't even sniff 150 ip. A 6 man rotation until somone goes down isn't that ludicrous. Not that I'm advocating for it, just wouldn't be as crazy as some think.

Why not have a 5 man rotation and keep one of those "starters" in the bullpen. If he needs to make a spot start so be it but lets not kill the pitching staff flexibility because of it.
