Chappy Community Moderator Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Saves the Birds a few million likely, and keeps him happy, win-win. Yup. I like this deal. Shapiro didn't have to do this. I feel like it's a signing to help help the foundation of this team together for a couple more years before his influence on the minors is felt on the big league club. Wouldn't be surprised in the least to hear of a Bautista or EE signing in the next couple weeks.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 This likely means he's headed for FA in 2018. I'm sure the Jays weighed singing him to a 6+ year deal now and if the cost was too much now its only going to be worse in 2 years. I think they're waiting to see how the Bautista/Edwin situation pans out.
BTS Community Moderator Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 I wonder if the Jays regretted not just giving Donaldson 11.8 this year on a 1 year contract. Why couldn't they have?

I'm sure the Jays weighed singing him to a 6+ year deal now and if the cost was too much now its only going to be worse in 2 years. That's if he gets better. He could get injured or he could simply just not play as well. Nothing is a guarentee. If he has another MVP caliber season we will save some money. Nothing else really to say. 2 years $29M instead of 2 years at around $33M through arbitration.
Cyborg Verified Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 He was seeking $11.8M in arb so this seems high He'd be close to $19M next year.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Why couldn't they have? Apparently as a file and trial team they don't sign contracts of 1 year after an arb. hearing is set so it has to be 2 years or more.

If he gets worse than I don't think the chances of him signing long term increase either since the Blue Jays will be less inclined to pay for a player not performing as well.

They could just go to arb? Youre not making sense, plus Beeston isnt Pres anymore. We already broke the no incentives rule with Floyd.

We already broke the no incentives rule with Floyd. From what I've read they still kept the file and trial system for this year. You're right that they still could have went to arb. but I think they really wanted to avoid that with all the public pressure.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 The only arguement the Blue Jays would have had in arbitration is that Trout probably should have won MVP.

BTS Community Moderator Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Was that fallout from the Frank Thomas fiasco? I hope not. The mistake there was a vesting option based on PA. There never should have been a policy against performance incentives on a 1-year deal. Those deals are low-risk high reward investments.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 The Blue Jays signed Johan Santana last year to an incentives deal.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Was that fallout from the Frank Thomas fiasco? Likely, they messed that up, looked horrible.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 He was going to make around $18-19M next season in arbitration most likely, so this move (depending on how the two year deal is structured) might save them a little money, or at least saves them the hassle of going to a hearing next year. The final year of arb in 2018 will be damn expensive, but at least this could plant the seeds for a longer term extension at this time next year.

I think if they were to sign him to a long term extension then they would have just done it now. By only signing the 2 year deal I think its much more likely Donaldson tests FA now.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Hmmm...gives them cost certainty for 2017 which also makes Donaldson an even more desirable asset should they decide to go the trade route after this season. Not saying that I want them to go that route or think that they will, just saying that this would increase his value.

By only signing the 2 year deal I think its much more likely Donaldson tests FA now. Signing him 2 years at a cheaper price gives them more space to sign Bautista and-or Encarnacion. He still has an arbitration year in 2018, and if he plays well in the coming 2 years, they will sign him no matter what. By then, players like Tulo and Martin might not be here anymore. A lot can change in two years.

I think this is a bridge deal, and the big contract for a longer term is coming after that. After they shed with some big contracts by 2018.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Nice job! Shapiro and Co. obviously believe that he's going to have another great year next year, great that they're showing support for our best player
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 He'd be close to $19M next year. How do super 2 players scale vs. normal arb guys? Price just made 19.7 in his last arb year before FA (settled amount).
FrozenRopes Verified Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 He was projected to make 20 million next year. It will be impossible to know until the end of the season. Next year would be based on some things that occur this coming season I believe. As an FA he could get 25 per year for 5 years or more. This works out well for both. Keeps a year of arb and they can re-up or move him. Kudos to both sides. Good faith by the Jays.
thatoneguy Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 BB s***ing up another thread with needless speculation, getting so damn comical at this point.
