That's why you give him a 3 year deal, with a 4th option year. This way he can play RF sometimes, and 1B sometimes. Or even DH if EE is gone. He still has an elite bat, and I don't think we can find someone to replace what he means for the team.

Agreed. I think this is a bridge deal, and the big contract for a longer term is coming after that. After they shed with some big contracts by 2018.

Signing him 2 years at a cheaper price gives them more space to sign Bautista and-or Encarnacion. He still has an arbitration year in 2018, and if he plays well in the coming 2 years, they will sign him no matter what. By then, players like Tulo and Martin might not be here anymore. A lot can change in two years.

Bautista takes a small hometown discount, signs for 19-20M, but we give him term and let him retire here. That's how I see it go.

They need to sign him. He's a big part of the team's identity. He brings a lot of leadership as we seen in the playoffs. I also get the feeling that Shapiro wants to keep him as well. I think it'll be done.
