KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 A's just DFA'd Sean Nolin. This seems rash. From what I understand his struggles last year were related to a groin injury.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 This deal just continues to pay dividends for the A's! http://m.thestar.com/#/article/sports/bluejays/2014/11/28/blue_jays_trade_brett_lawrie_to_as_for_josh_donaldson_reports.html

Whaaaat? The Jays better end up winning this trade or else they're gonna have some very angry season seat holders... This is exactly why I don't mind losing BOTH Bautista and Edwin, if Shapiro thinks that is the best move for our team. The fans will show up if we win. The fans will not show up if we tank for 2-3 years because we have no payroll flexibility

Just going to have to trust in smarter people than us to make the right decisions on this. They just can't give in to casual fan short term emotional connections to the current team. Vernon Wells and Pujols signing debates comes to mind. If it's done it's got to be part of a larger plan.

Infact Shapiro in his life as a GM has never been able to pull off a trade like that
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Shapiro has acquired great prospects that turned into great players yes. He has never acquired an established elite player for a bag of oranges like AA did

Infact Shapiro in his life as a GM has never been able to pull off a trade like that Broussard for Choo was pretty damn good, maybe better than the Donaldson deal if Barreto turns into something.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Choo was acquired as a prospect in that Shapiros history is very good. That I will admit.

Give it a rest. No one wanted Alvarez and if the worst we gave up was a defensive shortstop who can't hit then I'm fine with that Napoli was a small mistake but let it go.

We also gave up DeSclafani in the deal and he's likely the best asset in the trade now.

flafson Verified Member Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 you realize Reyes was a negative asset at time of Rockies trade? He was still above replacement level...
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 He was still above replacement level... he provided $4.2M in value, paid $22M, and declining rapidly.... a negative asset if there ever was one my point of course is we didnt get tulo as a result of the marlins trade, we got tulo by giving up 3 very good pitching prospects, at least one of which will become a quite valuable MLB player
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 you realize Reyes was a negative asset at time of Rockies trade? Reyes had put up 5.9 and 4 win season's prior to the trade. Are you trying to say you were predicting Reyes would be a negative asset by the time of his age 32 season? Your hindsight brilliance is extraordinary. If I could buy you a hero cookie for your outstanding baseball acumen, I would.

BigRed Verified Member Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 Realistically, letting JD walk after 2018 might be the best move for the franchise. It's not a slam dunk that he's still an MVP calibre performer heading into his mid thirties. I think coming to terms with this sooner than later will lessen the blow if it happens. If he has another 2-3 solid years, possibly with another top-3 MVP finish, he's going to be entering 25-30M dollar range over 6-7 years, similar to Price.
BigRed Verified Member Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 can the arbitration nerds tell us if this is less or more than what he was projected to earn if he we just took it year by year? I mean I'm sure it's close, just curious It's probably close. Since service time plays a role in arbitration raises, simply having another year under his belt would mean he would see a raise, just a matter of how much, because lets be honest, he's not going to have a bad year (just a matter of how good). If he puts together a solid year but not quite up to last year, it's probably bang on what he would have got if they went to arbitration next year. If he puts up another MVP-type season they Jays are probably saving a few million. It's probably within a couple million in either direction, depending on how this year plays out. I'm a little surprised they did this instead of buying out all his arbitration years, if not going all-in and giving him a 4-5 year deal, thereby buying out 1-2 FA years, but Donaldson probably wasn't willing to give up 1-2 years of FA on a team-friendly deal. It seemed kind of pointless to me since it still leaves 1 year of arbitration on the table - but it's a little harder to predict his value 3 seasons in advance and both sides probably wanted to hold out on that. I guess it saves them from going to arbitration next year and it keeps both sides happy for now, but I didn't really see the point. I figured the plan was always to just take him year-to-year arbitration until he was a FA.
