Laika Community Moderator Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 He was seeking $11.8M in arb so this seems high
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2016 Author Posted February 9, 2016 I was hoping for us to get at least 1 year of FA, but I doubt Donaldson would have wanted that. It's either long-term deal or test FA
guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 can the arbitration nerds tell us if this is less or more than what he was projected to earn if he we just took it year by year? I mean I'm sure it's close, just curious
Nafro Verified Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Works out well. Positions them to also ideally buy out his last year of arb and 2-3 years of FA.
GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 It saves us money next year when he would be getting closer to $20 million. Its a good will gesture for both sides while we retain control for his last arbitration season.
BTS Community Moderator Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Works out well. Positions them to also ideally buy out his last year of arb and 2-3 years of FA. More like last year of arb + 5-6 years of FA if he keeps up a 4+ win pace.

Next year would be based on some things that occur this coming season I believe.

intrigid Verified Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 So instead of him being a free agent after 2018, now he'll be one after 2017? Someone explain why I should be happy, thanks.

I mean I'm sure it's close, just curious I'm thinking it's slightly more. I'm not sure how the arbitration process treats super 2 players (Donaldson) vs. normal three year arb players.

Someone explain why I should be happy, thanks. Hes not. the Jays still have the Arb 6 rights but the value of that will be very high now. Short term cost certainty for the Jays while giving Donaldson a high leverage point in 2018.

Still FA after 2018, just means we skip arbitration next year, and would only have to go back in 2018
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Billy Beans knew he was going to win the MVP and get expensive. Shrewd move spinning him off for pitching depth before the gravy train swallowed the A's.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Good news, but I thought we had an extension, F U Herpderp!
Chappy Community Moderator Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Seems like a good signing. Keeps Donaldson happy, shows a commitment to the players, and ultimately it's unlikely it costs us anything more than he would have gotten through arbitration.

Saves the Birds a few million likely, and keeps him happy, win-win.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Roughly costs us an extra $3M this year but potentially saves about $6M for 2017? Seems good to me considering he'll still be under control.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 This likely means he's headed for FA in 2018. I'm sure the Jays weighed singing him to a 6+ year deal now and if the cost was too much now its only going to be worse in 2 years.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 You deleted it the next day, lol. I never deleted the post ever at any point. Anyone who says otherwise is f***ing liar and deserves to be throated.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 I wonder if the Jays regretted not just giving Donaldson 11.8 this year on a 1 year contract.
