Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 “It would be an honour if I had the opportunity to do so,” Bautista told The Canadian Press from Tampa, Fla. “I have to have something to consider at some point if I’m going to make that decision, which hasn’t happened yet,” Bautista said. “So I’m going to continue to go about my business just like any other year and any other day because I don’t really have a decision to make right now.” “I think it went well,” he said. “They’ve spoken about how they want to get to know us, at least referring to myself and Edwin. They’ve been the ones vocal about the fact that they’re considering extending us, which would be an honour for us if we get considered. “They felt like they had the need to get to know us a little bit and I feel the same way. They’re new to the team, I don’t really know them personally or their style of management per se other than what I’ve seen or heard in the press from their previous jobs, which was to be conservative because you’re in a small market type of thing. “That doesn’t mean necessarily that they’re going to come in with the same mindset if they’re handed a different set of tools or resources. So that’s what I’m trying to get to know and understand — what kind of adjustments, if any, they’re going to make from their managerial style to now be in with a different team with a different set of circumstances like us.” http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/baseball/jose-bautista-says-hed-like-to-be-a-toronto-blue-jay-for-life/article28564884/
vic city Verified Member Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 I'd like for Jose to retire a Jay too. But I don't want to give him the term he'll be looking for which will likely take him to the point where he's a liability and making $20M+/yr, which seems to be the norm for aging superstars...so I don't think the chances of him retiring a Jay are very high.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 I would make incentive-laden offers to Jose and Edwin, where 2 years are guaranteed at $20 AAV each, and the next 2 years depend on their production (measured by ISO/WRC/WAR/etc), where $10m AAV is the floor and $25 AAV is the ceiling. I would see if they take that, and hope for the best.

Laika Community Moderator Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 The fact that Jose is so old, but still so good, works heavily in the Blue Jays' favour. They should be able to get him extended on a reasonable 3 or 4 year deal, and he should end up being worth it. There's really no reason to expect him to demand some ludicrous contract. Beltran was good at 36 and signed for 3/$45. Zobrist was good at 35 and signed for 4/$56. If Jose doesn't retire as a Blue Jay then either his camp has insane contract demands or Toronto is f***ing stupid.

The market loves dingers, and they think Jose have the double value than Zobrist or Beltran 4/90M
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 The market loves dingers, and they think Jose have the double value than Zobrist or Beltran 4/90M I feel like that would be an unprecedented contract for someone entering their age 36 season
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2016 Author Posted February 4, 2016 I feel like that would be an unprecedented contract for someone entering their age 36 season Victor Martinez, 36, 4-year $68M deal
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 Victor Martinez, 36, 4-year $68M deal So he's getting significantly more than a stupid contract that turned out horribly for the team? I could see him asking for the V.Mart deal. That would be fair.
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 I still think Jose and Edwin sign nearly identical companion extensions at the same time.

Laika Community Moderator Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 Alex Gordon is just as good (or better), significantly younger, and he just got 4/$72.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 Nah...This market is different. Jose could sign for +90M in the free agency. Next years FA class for hitters is pretty weak. I'd give Jose 4 years/80 million + maybe a club option for a 5th year, though I'm sure he could get more given the weak FA market for outfielders.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 The market loves dingers, and they think Jose have the double value than Zobrist or Beltran 4/90M I agree. I see Bautista being able to get a lot more than Zobrist. 40 dingers commands a lot of dough.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2016 Author Posted February 5, 2016 Arden Zwelling Mark Shapiro says it's a "no-brainer" that the Blue Jays want to re-sign Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion. He's told both of them that.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Bautista is going to get paid. He signed an undermarket deal at the time and he will need to be compensated
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 What else is he gonna say? "I can't wait to get out here"? Make no mistake, Bautista will go to the highest bidder.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Bautista is going to get paid. He signed an undermarket deal at the time and he will need to be compensated So he'll demand well above market value from everyone or just the Jays?
intrigid Verified Member Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 What else is he gonna say? "I can't wait to get out here"? Make no mistake, Bautista will go to the highest bidder. Probably. I saw his quote and I really don't see how it's any different than David Price saying "yeah, absolutely" when a reporter asked him if he wants to stay in Toronto. Maybe Bautista's comment is stronger, but it's equally noncommittal. What he's really saying is "I would prefer if it were the Blue Jays that won the bidding for me."
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Bautista is going to get paid. He signed an undermarket deal at the time and he will need to be compensated both him and edwin signed deals which turned out to be very team friendly. It is tough to imagine asking them to take big discounts given this fact. The may be willing to take deferred money. This is only way they both come back
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 He's not going to the highest bidder no matter what, lol. He probably wants to win a WS more than maximize his money. The allure of competing for a WS in a lineup with Donaldson, Tulo, Martin, and Edwin for the next few years will be intense. Maybe if the highest bidder happens to be the Dodgers or Mets or some other very strong contender then he'll go there.
Trouba95 Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Sorry Jose. Your last season with the Jays should be one to remember. *fingers crossed*

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Especially a guy like Bautista. He probably has so many investments and other areas where he's making money. I can't imagine him just saying f*** it, I'll move to Baltimore or f***ing Cincinnati or some s*** for an extra $2M a year and just finish in last until my career ends. Especially, for that difference... Jose and Eddy have things to work over, it'll be interesting.

I don't think anyone is worrying about Baltimore or Cincinnati.. Boston has tons of money and he would be a perfect fit in LF at Fenway. I could see him getting 4/100 maybe even 5/120 if he actually hits FA and has another 4 Win Season.
