weird

Yeah, I don't understand this for Cespedes. He would've been better off waiting out the market a little bit longer to see if he could get the big contract. And if not, he could've then signed a 1-year deal to try it again next season.

The AAV is pretty tasty though.

This deal has an opt-out after the first year. He could be a free agent again in 2017

Oh. I didn't see that.

We should've offered a deal like this to Price.

He probably would have accepted it too since he was obviously so enamoured with Toronto after being here for two and half months.

He really likes the popcorn, too. That's important.

3/75M or 1/27.5M

Dont like this deal for the Mets. Céspedes a little overrated

If he beasts and bails it will be pretty good for the team. Opt outs are getting pretty interesting as a signing strategy these days.

If he's got an opt out after year 1 this is a pretty good deal for Cespedes in a crap market. If he puts up another good year he opts out and has to get signed big. If he sucks or is injured, 50M is a pretty nice consolation prize.

lol these are two completely different scenarios. I only hope you are joking.

At least if we offered it, worst case scenario he turns it down and we can say we tried.

but i think he's gonna opt out unless he has a terrible year. If he has the kind of season he's had before 2015, around 3 WAR, it still might make sense to test the market.

After the Upton, Gordon and Davis terms I'm a bit surprised at this with him being only 30.

But the quid pro quo is the opt out. If he kills it in 2016, he gets to test the market again...one that may include Edwin and Jose.

The AAV should put to rest any notion some have that Edwin and/or Jose are getting any less than $20mm AAV.

They both deserve more than 20...revenues are going up and salaries are too. Edwin on 4 years 37 mil was unbelievable.

Really is

I figured he was after either a 1 year deal or 5

AAV is great though

It is a 1 year deal essentially. No way he doesn't use the opt-out.

The guy was a three WAR player his entire career and wants to play for the Mets. I'd say there's almost no chance he declines the option.

But does he actually want to be a Met for its own sake or does he just want the short leash contract with massive AAV? I'd speculate it was only the Mets who offered a deal this particular combo of expensive and flexible. Even if he does take all three years of it for whatever reason he's "young" enough that he could earn himself one more above-average medium length deal in 2019.

Why negotiate a first-year opt-out into a contract if you don't intend to make use of it? Especially after what must have been a disappointment of an off-season during which no market seemed to develop until almost February.

Cyborg is 100% right, unless Cespedes has a disaster of a season or is injured he will decline. A 3 WAR season would set him up for a more lucrative contract than 2/50, he'd be 31 years old, he'd want a 5 year deal. There will still be a market for him even if he takes a significant step back from 2015, it makes no sense to settle for a 2 year deal.

He left a lot of money on the table to stay with the Mets.

He has a full no trade clause.

He'll be tied to draft compensation after 2016.

I think he takes the option unless he has another 5+ WAR season.Even then he might still take it.
