Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 The suspension for that offense is 50 games. The reasons for the other 112 games are less clear. I know that, but again there's no legitimate evidence that Chapman hurt anyone in his dispute with his girlfriend. I think people are making a big deal about this when it really shouldn't be.

I think people are making a big deal about this when it really shouldn't be. I really wasn't trying to say anything specific about Chapman. I was just pointing out that MLB has rarely used silly things like evidence when handing down suspensions. I also think that Jose Reyes will be suspended, even if he is found not guilty. This domestic violence policy scares me.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Not paying attention, has this thread discussed that a Chapman suspension would push his free agency back a year?

GD Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Well if they suspend him it won't be a week, lol
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Well if they suspend him it won't be a week, lol I realize that. I just felt the need to point that part out, being the pedantic ******* that I am lol.

Laika Community Moderator Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Maybe they get serious about trading Miller now, so they aren't wasting elite innings in low/mid leverage situations all year long. Would be kind of funny if they did and then Chapman went to jail / missed the whole season. It's not like the domestic thing was his first brush with the law. There's other weird stuff on his public record.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Well if they suspend him it won't be a week, lol Yankees are creating video evidence (but not quite Ray Rice'ian) as we speak. Just 50 game suspension worthy evidence
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 The Jose Reyes scenario is a lot different as far as we know. Perhaps, but it will be a dangerous precedent if it is determined that Reyes or Chapman didn't commit a crime and they are still suspended. I think that both will plead not guilty and stand a good chance winning. Then you get into the NFL situation where suspensions are completely arbitrary and not based on fact.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 I don't think criminal guilt absolutely needs to be a prerequisite for professional penalties. Obviously sports leagues need a more fair and consistent process for handing out penalties in situations like domestic violence ones, but what's at stake is significantly different for the individual vs. a criminal case so the standards of proof and reasonable behaviour really should be different too. I just hate how the commissioners are given the arbitrary power. There should be an independent body and some sort of actual, expedited judicial process.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 I didn't say that. However it wouldn't suprise me if we put in a decent offer I admit the past few years I haven't followed the farm as much but looking at the deal it's not involving any top names at all. Fair enough. I've just seen too many dumb "AA would have done it all" comments since he left.

I think that athletes should generally be left alone if no crime is committed. Part of that is because they're human beings and I'd expect the same treatment from my employer. The other part is that I don't see any scenario where the punishments are fair on a consistent basis. Let's just say the Reyes things ends at a few scratches and it's a one time argument. They live happily ever after, no harm done. Then let's say Chapman didn't touch his girlfriend, but fired gunshots in her vicinity and she feared for her life. Which is worse? I don't have a clue and I don't wish to debate it. There's going to be dozens of valid perspectives and you'll never get it right.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Well mlb as an organization is an employer that has a code of conduct. If Chapman's action broke that code of conduct then he should be suspended based on MLBs discretion independent of legal implications
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 I am also not going to say what is right or wrong but MLB is going to be looking at their public image as well. If they fail to suspend either for accusations of domestic violence is that going to make them look bad to the general public. I guarantee they look at this when they make their decision which i don't think bodes well for either Reyes or Chapman because i think thats what it comes down to and MLB will want to set an example for it. Just IMO i could be wrong.
TBJ12 Verified Member Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 I honestly think nothing will come out of it. Chapman didn't really do anything wrong except the questionable decision to fire shots at his wall. "Cincinnati Reds closer Aroldis Chapman allegedly fired eight gunshots in the garage of his Miami-area home following an October argument with his girlfriend in which she told police he “choked” her and pushed her against a wall, according to police reports obtained by Yahoo Sports." So, your ok with Chapman going out to his garage and firing off 8 rounds after a fight with his gf? Who in their right mind does something like that? I wouldn't be surprised if he's gulity of choking and pushing her as well. I certainly wouldn't say he did nothing wrong here.

MLB, NFL, NBA are multi billion brands and as a business they rely on "court of public opinion" far more than the legal test to protect their brand. I don't blame them for taking action even when there is reasonable doubt. In the same vein its why so many big brands dump celeb endorsements at the slightest hint of negative perception. The athletes benefit from the brand as evidenced by their earning power, and they should understand if they end up perceived to be acting on the wrong side of the league policies they will pay a commensurately higher price. It may not be fair or natural justice in the legal sense, but that's the price of admission into this massive business.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 They have the top 3 K/9 pitchers from last season now in Chapman, Miller and Betances. And Cecil had a better K/BB than all 3 of them while putting up a better WHIP than Betances and Chapman. Osuna was also ahead of Betances and Chapman in terms of K/BB and WHIP and just behind Miller in both those categories. It's obviously a great BP but not that much better than what the Jays have.

DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 The Jays' arms are being underrated here. They have two of the best high leverage guys in baseball, Yankees have a third and a better BP than the Jays. I just want Osuna and Cecil to get the recognition they deserve. I'm also not sold that Chapman a) wont be distracted and will be able to get through the Jays elite FB hitters. That being said it was a good move for the Yanks (likely to have the best BP in baseball) but they're still behind the Jays everywhere else on the diamond going in to the season. I'm not worried about this move at all.

I'm not worried about this move at all. The Yankees have three guys that stand a decent chance of giving them a combined 225 high-leverage innings of sub-2 ERA ball. We've never seen a bullpen like this, and don't really know how big an impact it will have, but they are absolutely capable of winning the AL East this year.

DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 There aren't going to be 225 high leverage innings for them to pitch. It's a moot point. Miller is the best pitcher of the bunch but Osuna and Cecil are on the same level as Chapman and Betances. Compared to the Jays they're maybe giving an extra 20 high leverage innings to an elite RP. The Jays will give those innings to Sanchez and situational guys. It's not going to be a big difference.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Osuna and Cecil are on the same level as Chapman and Betances. How many signatures will this find its way into?
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Comparing Osuna and Cecil to Betances and Chapman feels like comparing Napoli/Santana to EE/Bautista
