Followthelight Verified Member Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 The more I listen to Shapiro and Atkins, the less confident I am becoming in them. Every time they go to the media it's like listening to a woman explaining nicely why she doesn't want to date you. They have their lame duck manager in place, excuses in their holster ready to fire at a moment's notice ("Well we just felt Gibby wasn't the right fit for how we want this team to be managed moving forward," "well unfortunately our farm system is depleted right now due to the previous regime and we're spending time restocking that," "well we have to think long term"). Hey the philosophy may be great for the next 10 years but we have a small window to actually win a championship and it doesn't seem like they care. I agree....the Jays window is 2016...this group doesn't seem to be operating to take advantage of that.
Governator Community Moderator Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 It was being facetious.....payroll increase or not, what are they waiting for? They've only signed 2 pitchers, traded for another, made offer for another.... It's December f***ing 10th calm your tits.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 I personally like what they have done so far and how they have done it, but I do agree there seems to be a lack of urgency regarding 2016....lots of off season left though.

Hey the philosophy may be great for the next 10 years but we have a small window to actually win a championship and it doesn't seem like they care. The goal is to have an infinite window of contention. A team that has the chance to make the playoffs every single year. Get this "1 year window" crap out of your head. What happens if Donaldson and Tulo both get injured next year and miss 100 games each? Then we would be f***ed. If we build a team that is competitive EVERY year, then we don't waste the "1 year window" thanks to injuries.
bendera3 Verified Member Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 While AA's splashes were exciting, it's nice to have a boss who is focused on creating a deep team. Hopefully flying under the radar and grabbing some decent players as depth will prevent the typical DFA whirlwind that we dealt with in the past.

Moving forward I 100% agree with you but the reality is after this year we likely lose one or both of Bautista and EE, which is a huge blow. Who knows how long Tulo can stay healthy and not to mention we lose Dickey who while I don't like him, eats a lot of innings. Martin is going to start declining, etc etc etc. Bottom line in fine, build for a sustainable winner, but right NOW we are World Series contenders so why waste that opportunity twiddling your thumbs?

Yep, exactly. Unfortunately the Org does not seem to care about about winning, and more about running a frugal ship.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 So it turns out we made a 2 year offer to Yusmerio Petit. He obviously didn't want to play here, which is fine. This, however begs the question why we didn't trade some used balls for him at the tender deadline. They knew he was available (Every team knows who will be non-tendered, they aren't stupid) and at a much lower price. We also had flexibility to make a move on the 40 man. Not signing him doesn't bother me, but that should. It reeks of being unprepared and not having a plan. The Jays FO seems understaffed. In an interview Shapiro mentioned that they won't look at extensions unti closer to ST after arb. and that they really just don't have the manpower to be thinking about extensions right now. This strategy seems fine but you do risk players prices increasing after FA.

There's no such thing as building a World Series contender though. The Jays had a World Series roster last season and proceeded to barely get by the ALDS before losing in 6 in the ALCS. The goal is to make the playoffs. Shapiro's goal seems to be to make the playoffs in 2016 and then have options in 2017 to either change course or retool. That's probably the right way to go given where the team is. Maximize 2016 wins but don't sacrifice 2017-beyond flexibility or any prospects. I can understand why he doesn't want to get tied down to middle relievers making $5m a year or anything like that. Might help the 2016 team but he still has to be smart about how he spends whatever he has.

The reality is that unless payroll climbs over the 160-165 range its going to be difficult to build a championship contender for 2017. And so far, it looks like they haven't done a good job in maximizing wins in 2016. The goal has to be to win the division with the new wildcard format and right now the Red Sox look a decent amount better than the Blue Jays.

Maybe true but to have this team and not go out and get a number one or two starting pitcher to solidify the rotation, and to not get a late innings relief guy to replace Lowe and Hendriks is just a flat out failure. There may be plenty of off season left but the big ticket players are coming off the board and we're back to scraping the bottom of the barrel for bargains again like it's 2011. You can always trade them away for other assets when it no longer makes sense to keep them. Maybe it's not Shapiro and his Cleveland team, maybe it's Rogers hamstringing them and that's fair enough...but as a fan it's frustrating knowing we're right on the cusp of something really special, and it's like we have to win in spite of ownership and management, not because of them.

Yeah he should be able to at least get the O'Day type deal if he repeats. He's been a top ~20 reliever of better over the last 3 years, probably.
