Yeah. You can see them walking the tightrope this offseason. Doing everything they can to field a winner in 2015 while also stopping the bleeding of youth from the system and avoiding risky long-term deals. I think they've done a nice job. Not even remotely sexy, but they've effectively re-build the rotation on the cheap.

This team with a couple solid RP additions (not asking for much here) should be a very dangerous team in 2016. Moving into 2017 we still have another option on Dickey, Stroman is still under control obviously, Estrada is under contract as is Happ. This rotation will be cheap and effective for 2 seasons at least and we have some potentially cheap depth with Hutch, Sanchez, and Osuna as well. Didn't mention Chavez as I don't recall his control/contract status off the top of my head.

At this point I only see a couple mid tier RP signings on tye horizon and maybe a backup catcher if Thole isn't ultimately brought back. Trades are still possible but I think Shiparo wants to hold onto whatever younger assets we still have and focus on the transitional stage moving forward. Some smart money management and he could keep this team competitive for a while Imo.

Is there any reason to think the Jays might make a play on Heyward? Second tier pitchers and an elite defender might ultimately provide a better boost to run prevention than a top tier starter would have. That seems like the only real big FA move that would make sense right now though that doesn't make it terribly likely.

The rogers are cheap people will explode if they signed heyward. "Rogers make PR move after the Price backlash, and overpay for a light hitting RF! Argh!!!"

There's a segment of the fan base that isn't happy unless the team signs the one guy they are most familiar with. Last year, there were fans, journalists even, who said the off-season wouldn't be a success unless Melky was signed.

Agreed. Dickey (no option) and Chavez are both free agents after 2016.

I think the roatation looks pretty s***** for 2017 tbh. Stroman looks good and then you hope Happ and Estrada can be be close to average pitchers. If either of them regress you are looking for 2 SP again the next offseason where there looks to be no good FA SP.

And the Jays really don't have any pitching prospects outside of Connor Greene who figure to be ready by then.

I doubt it at this point. Shapiro knows what he is doing. I doubt he hasn't already laid out a game plan to he followed moving forward. Heyward may be someone on his list but I doubt it. At this point all he has to do is patch this up short term and we are in great shape.

Well that changes things a bit but we still have Stroman, Estrada and Happ which is a solid group assuming another arm emerges.

They also didn't commit any significant money to the rotation which will make addressing it much easier.

I like that a lot is getting crossed off the list and in good time but I'm hoping more opportunities to add wins will come along. Maybe an agent gets desperate. Maybe an unexpected trade opportunity pops up. If the worst case scenario is that they are pretty much done then I'm happy with that because at least the team didn't get caught with their dick in their hands but I'm hoping for more.

I think Hutch will emerge at some point. Maybe not this year though.

we say this every year....hope springs eternal

Hopefully Rogers gives an increase to payroll next season so they can pay for more quality. Their revenues should be even higher next year barring the Jays being out of it by September.

Yeah it would have been a low balled 5 year contract, then he would have held a presser saying he bid but the player chose to go elsewhere... Like every other time lol. I like that we respected Price and decided not to offer him anything when we knew we won't match his demands

AA in press on why DP didn't sign: "We made a offer to David that we felt was competitive."

Actual situation:

AA: "Hey David, we're willing to give you a 9 figure contract."

David: "That's awesome AA. Lets hear it!"

AA: "Great. Great. $100M over 10 years with like, 25 mil deferred"

*click*

AA: "Hello.. David? Still there? .... I am sure he'll call back. Not like Boston has money to blow ammirite!"

Yea I'm sure they would of offered him something...not $31 million but something. Really doesn't matter who is GM in Price's case he was never coming back.

5/140 maybe

"Sources say Anthopoulos began laying the groundwork to do so in August, before Mark Shapiro was named the team’s new president and CEO. Price, sources say, had genuine interest in returning to Toronto."

"Ultimately, Anthopoulos rejected a five-year offer to remain the team’s general manager once it became clear he would no longer have the decision-making authority he enjoyed under former club president Paul Beeston."

"Could the Blue Jays have afforded Price? Yes, in theory, they could have. But the Jays chose quantity over quality — and there’s an argument to be made that they were wise in doing so. Toronto ended the season with little rotation depth in the upper minor leagues, and Shapiro wanted to spread the health and performance risk among multiple starters."

"It could take several years to determine whether Shapiro made the correct calculation, but we know already that Anthopoulos would have taken a different approach with the former Cy Young Award winner."

I think AA would have gone 7 190 or maybe even 7 200.

Based on what? His biggest commitment ever to a pitcher was three years of Buehrle.

Based on the fact because he made the playoffs once in 6 years and has everyone on his dick now

job security. Oh wait they offered him that.

I don't see AA getting approval from Rogers to sign Price to any contract. Sure AA would've tried, but unless he was going to beat Bostons offer by a few million Price would not sign.

Boston is a way better baseball city compared to Toronto.

Ross Atkins will be named #BlueJays' new GM per @susanslusser

Probably doesn't mean much, but on Twatter, lots of Indians fans are happy he's gone.
