Governator Community Moderator Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 2010: 85–77, no playoffs 2011: 81–81, no playoffs 2012: 73–89, no playoffs 2013: 74–88, no playoffs 2014: 83-79, no playoffs 2015: 93-69, mental collapse in the ALCS He also made trades with the Marlins and Mets that are universally regarded as two of the dumbest ever, and he re-hired Gibbons. Wow, what a real "ninja" he was. How on Earth are we ever going to replace this guy? I think it's fair to say he got better with time and the term ninja kind of refers to trades happening that you don't expect, so I think right or wrong it's a relevant nickname.
candymartinez Verified Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Tune into PTS between 5 and 7 PM. Should be a good one. AA will be on at 6 PM, Bobcat just confirmed. Problem is, that would involve actually having to listen to McGowan. Think I'll wait for the Coles notes.

HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 You have to evaluate from the perspective of that moment. And then you revisit that moment with the benefit of hindsight periodically to look at things you should have seen and look at things you should have weighted differently etc. I would definitely disagree with rating trades based solely on results. That's what I do - I rate trades on when it happened knowing the information we know. The Marlins deal looked pretty even I think. Johnson had a good year, and there was no way we knew he'd implode the way he did in Toronto. His velocity wasn't even all that bad. Reyes we knew he would be injured, but there were also freak injuries with him. The guys we sent such as Nicolino were on the lower spectrum of our pitching depth. And Hech was a guy you don't really hold on if you needed to part with him. Alvarez hurt the most - I really liked him. As for the Mets trade - I have no regrets whatsoever. Dickey had several great years including his Cy Young year. Yeah he was moving over to the AL but he also had great numbers against the AL east and in domed stadiums. Syndergaard at that time, and especially on this message board, was rated lower than Sanchez. If I recall, no one liked his flat fastball and his curveball wasn't wipe out. Obviously that has changed now, but Syndergaard was part of the big three that was also expendable. And we were able to get a Cy Young for him. d'Arnaud hurt - yes. I fully expected him to do well and he has so far. But you have to give up something to get something.

Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal 48s48 seconds ago In recent years, Antonetti wanted Shapiro to become more involved in baseball, but Shapiro was sensitive to idea of being too intrusive. Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal 43s43 seconds ago We do not know exactly why Anthopoulos may have been uncomfortable with new setup, but Antonetti worked happily under Shapiro for 17 years.

Slugger Verified Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Personally, I think Rogers is steering us into a different direction that AA doesn't want to go towards (cutting payroll). And he doesn't want to go in that direction under someone else. I could be wrong, but I feel that today's events are foreshadowing our future. I mean, Rogers obviously hired Shapiro because they thought he could navigate under a limited payroll. And now AA leaves? I can easily see Shapiro saying, "Look AA. You did a great job but ownership wants us to tighten the ship a bit and the canadian dollar, blah blah blah. You're going to have to make some moves with our veteran players that you might not want to make." AA: "f*** it I'm out". Rogers isn't cutting payroll.
Nafro Verified Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Honest question for you chums - how exactly do you rate whether we won a trade or not? I think the concept of winning/losing trade's is ridiculous. In reality a trade should benefit both teams and normally does. I also think part of the reason Shapiro was hired was because he oversaw a Stadium renovation. The Rogers Centre is going to be undergoing a serious overhaul over the next five years.
Effit Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Given the events of today, I can't help but be amused at coming to the forum and seeing that the 'can Shapiro and AA coexist' thread is closed. lol

Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Don't like the report how Shapiro disliked the prospects being traded. The Tulo trade was a huge win in surplus value and in hindsight I, as well as many other people would do the David Price trade over and over again. Ben revere was traded for 2 relievers in A ball. Unless you go back to Miami and Mets trades the trades made have been fantastic for the blue jays. I think Shapiro is going all the way back and reviewed his tenure. AA probably didn't like that because he feels like a new man. Imagine if someone questioned every decision you made in the past? Probably wouldn't feel to good.

Edit: I don't think I've heard anything worse than Dean Blundell learning sports on the radio while he's interviewing players.

candymartinez Verified Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Who's McGowan? Bob McCown is a hockey fan who talks on the local sports radio station the Fan 590. He's in over his head talking about baseball unless he has some inside knowledge of what's going on at Rogers.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 You don't get it. I get it. Actual record vs. theoretical record. They were underperforming...badly. But they've had good pythag records in the past that led to 3rd place finishes. They only allow teams in the playoffs that actually win. So ya, your record is what it is.

Ok, so they were 50-51 and badly under performing. So saying AT BEST they were a 500 (true talent) team is laughable. McCown is a clown.
