jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 Yeah if something is only discussed in this thread, 50% chance I miss it altogether. I'd understand for super active boards where things get knocked off the front page in no time, but come the f*** on. +1. Especially when it's Feb 18th and there's not a ton of news.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 This has been both the shortest off season in real time and the longest off season in perceived time. #realphilospher
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 Point well taken guys There's been so little talk about, no need to lock up any threads
BigRed Verified Member Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 funny thing is, I went back and looked through it and it was barely discussed. Its quite interesting that it wasnt discussed more though, considering how many people on here bitch about Rogers being cheap. Wonder if it had anything to do with the insatiable need to have everything in one thread...... I'd love for somebody to explain to me how Rogers is cheap when the Jays payroll is about double that of the Leafs and Raptors, who both sit around 70M. I realize there's a hard cap in the NHL, but the Jays budget blows the Raptors, Leafs and Toronto FC out of the water. The Leafs are nearly at the cap with a last place team -- I'd be embarrassed if I were a Leafs fan. Rogers is a publicly traded company, they are going to have methodologies and procedures for arriving at their budget, keeping shareholders interests in mind. 5 years ago the Jays were sitting around 64M. If you're older than 15-20 and didn't have to endure (or were too young to remember) the years of terrible ownership under Labatt / Interbrew (outside of 92/93), and the early Rogers years it's actually a pretty good time to be a Jays fan. Rogers has shown a big commitment to the Jays over the past 4-5 years, and there's no sign of them slowing down.

Turns out, because Rogers owns the Blue Jays alone vs partnership like Raptors and all the rest, Jays payroll (expenses) has a direct impact on their stock. All teams owned by MLSE do not affect their stock. So if for example, Rogers were to give a 200 million contract to Price, their stock would dip.

Labatt was purchased by InBev (InterBrew) in 1995. They were a very good owner prior to that. The InBev people treated the Jays like a burden that they were saddled with from purchasing Labbats. Seems to me like they were terrible owners in general. The Labatts brand doesn't seem nearly as strong now as it was back then.

Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 Don't Worry guys Pillar has this:
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 That was worth reading -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "I definitely can see myself batting lead off," Pillar said in Toronto recently. "It's a role I've been in in the minor leagues. ... My mindset doesn't change whether I'm hitting first or eighth or ninth. Wherever they put me in the lineup my job's to get on base and score runs, allow the big boys to drive me in. "But I definitely think I'd make a great lead-off hitter. I had success doing it in the minor leagues." Pillar batted .278 with a .314 on-base percentage through 159 games with the Blue Jays last year, his first full season at the major league level. He also had 25 stolen bases and was only caught stealing four times. While his on-base numbers aren't striking -- he walked just 28 times all season -- Pillar isn't too concerned about what his 2015 OBP says about him as a potential lead-off man, especially if the team has reigning American League MVP Josh Donaldson batting second again this year. "I promise you with Josh hitting behind me, if he's in the two-hole I'll get some better pitches to hit," Pillar said. "The walks will come ... We always talk about walks, and yeah walks are going to happen. But I'm out there to hit. If I get a good pitch I'm not going to sit around and try to walk. "But I promise you if Josh is hitting behind me I'll get on base more."
