glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 What about Cliff Lee? Alvarez has the former Jays connection (really don't get why Miami didn't tender him aside from being an organization run by monkeys), but Lee has the Shapiro connection. Not sure if Lee would be a typical flier since his top level game is so great. Thoughts on if he makes sense and what he'd cost? Or am I just blowing smoke? As far as affordable SP depth is concerned, Lee would be on the top of my list if his medicals check out. It's exactly the type of move the Jays can afford to make now that they have added depth to the rotation. Whether Lee would sign with Toronto is the question. Maybe the Shapiro connection will help.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 Please sign Maeda. What makes you think Shapiro would be willing to throw that much money at him? Dodgers will get him.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 Now that Maeda and Lee are out there, I'm not as thrilled about Chavez. Still like the Happ signing, though. I guess we can always trade Dickey but I still don't think he gets what he's worth in a trade.

Yeah I wouldn't bring his name up if it weren't for the Shapiro connection. If he wants to win and he has a good relationship with Shapiro, we wouldn't be the most outlandish of pairings. Lee has been medically cleared and is pitching without issues according to a report from today.

Making that trade in November made little sense when there was still the entire offseason. I would think most people on the board wouldn't do that trade today if we still had Hendriks.

Hendriks is a reliever - albeit a good one - and therefore is anything but irreplaceable. Good relievers pop up all the time, year-to-year. There's nothing wrong with acquiring proven, solid back-end rotation depth in November, February, April, July - any time of the year. The trade was fine, and it certainly does not prevent the Jays from making a subsequent, and more significant, addition to their rotation. Depth is a good thing.

If it was 1 year of Hendriks for 1 year of Chavez I would agree but Hendriks had 3 more years of control and was making nothing. As it stands right now the Jays need a bullpen arm like Hendriks.

Chavez is probably traded by then. With a new GM its conceivable that Atkins trades Chavez back for bullpen relief to a desperate team without the negative press. All the while signing guys like Cliff Lee and co.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 We could've had Yu darvish I remember those dark times... False reports and all

Front Offices hate to admit to mistakes.

Signing Lee makes Chavez even more necessary IMO. You can't rely on him for anything and having a swingman who can give you quality starts has been quite a boon for this team in years with rotation questions (Villanueva, Estrada, Tallet, Downs)

The issue with waiting to fill their obvious hole (SP'ing) is the longer you wait, the more desperate you become - it's not a good position to be in. I actually like how they've filled that hole early in the offseason as they now have the opportunity to look at all avenues for improving the team (without having a glaring hole staring them in the face).

If you have one hole in the rotation, you can wait. If you have three you sign who you can know, and then hope to upgrade later. It`s not like you can have enough starting pitching. Hutch in AAA would be fantastic to start the season. I am interested in both Lee and Meada. A lot. I`ll bet Lee can still be a quality 3-4 pitcher. Meada, who knows.
SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 Aaaahhh i see you have never seen one of the best movies ever created.... Shame on you Seriously a really, really excellent movie. I also liked the Natural and Field of Dreams, as baseball movies go.

I don't have a problem with acquiring SP depth, just that they gave up way too much to get him. Seems like if LaCava waited a little longer they could of got Chavez or a similar pitcher for less than Hendriks.

Of Chavez might already be on another team....you have no idea if LaCava could have waited at all.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 Maeda and Lee, trade EVERYONE!!!
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 So let's see would SD do a deal for Shields if we give them Dickey Thole and Goins and no money? They want a SS and Dickey Thole is one and done! Plus they save on payroll. Let's give them Dickey and Thole and Revere and Goins and Ricky Romero and John Gibbons and Cliff Pennington!! LOL !
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 Maeda isn't touching Tanaka money correct?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 Maeda isn't touching Tanaka money correct? Close, he's just as good.
