BTS Community Moderator Posted December 3, 2015 Author Posted December 3, 2015 It's not more than what he's worth. He'd only need half a WAR to provide a positive return but I just don't love giving a roster spot to him in the first place. The bench is kind of full now. LF - Revere 1B - Colabello 1B - Smoak inf - Goins OF - Saunders OF - Pompey Someone has to be shipped out to make room for a backup catcher.

He's had more than a few seasons with negative WAR. He may or may not have gotten $3.9M as a FA.

Hopefully Cola.... there's redundancy here and he might actually return something useful

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 Or Pompey can be in the minors? .. He's got nothing left to prove in MiLB. Time for him to prove he belongs in the Show.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 I was pretty excited to see how Shapiro could reshape the peripheries of our roster... pretty disappointed as there was certainly room for improvement.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 It's been a safe, low-key offseason with zero risk. Not much to complain about, not much to love. For me I like the Happ move. I'm okay with the Estrada and Smoak deals although Ideally you would of liked to upgrade those positions since the floor is pretty low. Didn't like the Chavez move. With the Red Sox moves it does seem to hurt to see the Jays not really doing much though.

Sure, but from a roster construction standpoint it seems less than optimal.

The dollar per war argument imo doesn't apply when you're talking about fractional wins. Smoak is a terrible, there is no point burning a roster spot on him like you said. It will be harder to just waive him if we might want to, it shouldn't but that's how teams behave, sunken cost fallacy and all.

Too bad Alonso already got traded.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 Don't like this deal with Smoak. 4 million could have been better spent elsewhere. I'm thinking they might try to trade Revere.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 3, 2015 Author Posted December 3, 2015 So correct me if I'm wrong, but Delabar burned option years in 2012, 2014, and 2015 and should be out of options this year.

Too bad Alonso already got traded. yeah, Smoak is a consistently terrible player. In his best season put up a below average 113 wRC+ but overall he's just been bad, there is no simply no potential here. Like you, hate this move and the Chavez deal. The Happ and Estrada signings are a fine, and may even give us value given the crazy salary inflation we'll see this offseason and in the next couple of years.
Pulk_Pull Verified Member Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 Mlbtr projected him at 2 mil... Would love to see a source for 4 mil http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/10/projected-arbitration-salaries-for-2016.html
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 Can LaCava get the f*** out like now.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 Is he going to give Soria 5M a year next?

nmrch Verified Member Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 Can LaCava get the f*** out like now. I blame Shapiro for this, and the Chavez deal. He is ultimately the President, he's either behind these moves or is approving them with his choice to let LaCava run the show.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 Is he going to give Soria 5M a year next? Soria is asking 3/27M
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 We claim to have no money to spend but instead were buying s***. We got a 4th and 5th starter and Smoak is a backup 1st baseman who can't hit a breaking ball. Hes a player you bring to spring training on invite not a f***ing guaranteed contract. Terrible f***ing offseason. I didn't want to give Price 217M either but bring in some f***ing talent not just guys to fill holes.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 Soria is asking 3/27M Watch him sign him for that and Boston or New York get O'Day for the same price.

BigRed Verified Member Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 The only logical explanation is that Smoak was going to ask for 5+ in arbitration and they weren't confident they'd win. Even if the team went into arbitration asking for 3M I'd think that would be a safe number to win with, especially if Smoak was asking for 5+.
JFD Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 I'd be upset if he signed for free tbh. why do we need this guy at all?
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 So we have spent 30 Million on Happ Chavez Revere Smoak Saunders. Lol
raku1108 Verified Member Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 What a waste of $ on Chavez, Happ and now Smoak!!! Bello is now gonna ask for same $ if not more... why can't Lacava just wait to see what's out there on the market?? I expect some good bargains as usual.... That's how the likes of Royals and Rays compete! I wanna see Dickey traded pls....... use that $12M on a younger, more reliable arm!!!
