Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2023 Posted June 16, 2023 Lukes has virtually no use on the current roster because its not like they would put him CF either and Biggio can play both corners. May as well promote someone useful. Plus less at-bats for Espinal would be ideal Oddly enough - Espinal has been league average v. RHP this year (100 wRC+) and sucking a bag of dicks vs. LHP (-7 wRC+). Who on earth would have expected that? He was supposed to be on the weak side of the platoon (as he's always hit LHP). No idea what you do with him. Another failure by Atkins. He should have known Espinal would stop hitting lefties this year.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2023 Posted June 16, 2023 Not directed at Brownie but no idea why Biggio still has his fans but Espinal is being counted out. In the past 2.5 years prior to this one Espinal has been over a 2 WAR a season player. Less than 100 ABs later and everyone has given up on him. He had an abysmal April, was a little bit better in May and is starting to see the ball better in June. SSS alert but he's had 0 Ks and 3 BBs in 17 ABs. He's not someone you want starting but he's a fine backup infielder.

Yeah the team doesn't need a backup CFer, Varsho just slides over when KK needs a day off. Whit can play 2B and OF. Biggio can play 1B, 2B, OF. Espinal can play 2B, 3B, SS. Our DH (Belt) plays a fair bit of 1B. It wouldn't be a bad idea to get someone is extremely good in a situational bench role since they would never have to take ABs. Billy Hamilton, for example, could serve as a pinch runner only. With the new rules he could be deadly in that role. Could also be a defensive replacement.

Espinal has been legitimately bad for an extended stretch dating back to July of last season when he went into a tailspin at the plate. Since then he's been exactly replacement level over 84 games with a paltry 73 WRC+. He provides no value on the bases so literally the only thing he has been good for is his glove. Whether or not that's fine is obviously within the eye of the beholder but he hasn't really been doing much to help the team win.

He had a bad July last year with a 73wRC+. August was 86 and then September of last year was 111. He's off to a slow start this year but even if you want to say he's been sucking and date it back to last July, it's really not that many ABs. Maybe like 275? Way too early to write him off, especially when the ~600 ABs prior were really good. Biggio basically hasn't been good this DECADE and I see people still hopeful that he'll get it going. Maybe he will but not sure why fans still show some optimism for him and then write off Espinal.

Ultimately I don't see the point of wasting so much time complaining about either of Biggio or Espinal. Each of these guys appears to have a bench player level of talent, and accordingly is going to see their playing time increased or reduced based on how they produce at the plate. Espinal is a better defender in the field vs Biggio who provides more value on the bases. Each of them has shown spurts of offensive production that gets you hoping for more, but ends up going into a deep slump where the results basically fizzle away to nothing. Biggio is in one such surge right now where he's barreled up 6 balls in the last 3 weeks, compared to 10 for the entire 2022 season. He very well may have been ripped off of another barrel in last night's game as well off of an elite reliever. I don't recall him ever having a stretch of games like this where he's hitting the ball with this type of authority, so I'm going to stubbornly hope this is at least somewhat sustainable and not just a short term hot streak.
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 16, 2023 Posted June 16, 2023 2022 WAR per 600 PA Espinal 2.81 Biggio 2.57 In theory they could platoon and be a 3+ WAR 2B...

He did get ripped off. Saw a ball flight tracker that put that ball about 3 feet inside the fair pole.

MLB needs to incorporate technology for calling fair/foul for home runs rather than rely on terrible camera angles that aren't even pointed at the foul pole.

Since he’s probably been hiding an injury this would be good.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted June 16, 2023 Posted June 16, 2023 I think Horwitz was called up so they needed someone at 1B tonight. I’ve heard rumblings from a friend who’s had a few successful call ups among Jays over the last few years that he was called up for tomorrows game. We will have to see tomorrow though. I can’t find anything to actually confirm it. Good call sir.

Laika Community Moderator Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 Does Orelvis go oppo often or is he more of a pull everything slugger?
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 Does Orelvis go oppo often or is he more of a pull everything slugger? Looking at the numbers I’d assume he’s a pull guy, and memory doesn’t seem to recall any oppo HR highlights but maybe there’s a few out there
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 Connor Cooke is a strike out machine. 18.32 K/9 in high A this season before being promoted to AA where he's racked up 17.25 K/9 so far. His combined 2.03 xFIP leads all Jays MiLB pitchers so far this season.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 This should be the meta moving forward. I want the Jays bullpen stacked with guys who have 12/9 K per 9 at the minimum. No more contact pitchers in the Bullpen. They can kick rocks.

No more contact pitchers in the Bullpen. They can kick rocks. That's the type of bullpen we have right now. We're 2nd in MLB in K/9 out of the bullpen at 10.35 K/9...which is producing the 24th best WAR, 20th best FIP, 14th best ERA, but 2nd best xFIP. Richards, Romano, Garcia, Swanson, Pearson, Jackson, Pop, White are all over 9K/9, with Mayza just a bit below. It's only Cimber who can't strike anyone out and I can't imagine he's going to see the field in meaningful games for a while now.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 Orelvis ops vs RHP: 2023: .729 2022: .713 Vs LHP it's 2023: 1.181 (!!!) 2022: .810 That's not necessarily a bad thing for a risky prospect like Orelvis. Seems like it raises his floor to be a lefty-mashing utility infielder.
