connorp Old-Timey Member Posted February 24, 2021 Posted February 24, 2021 Yes, off-board. You are spot on. For whatever reason, his industry rankings (across the board) vs his Fantasy (actual) value is much much less. It's like having the biggest nicest house in a s*** neighborhood. Yeah stats scared away the fantasy players but not scouts.. and it’s not like he’s glove-first prospect

Hopefully he can figure out how to harness his stuff but he appears to be pretty wild. Edit - Actually 116 BB in all the 163.2 innings on Baseball Reference. His Cuban numbers are aggregated weirdly on BR. It also looks like he pitched 10 innings in an exhibition series of Cubans against Can-Am Indy teams in 2017.

You'll notice that everybody there has a crummy K/BB. It's kind of like MLB way back in the day. The hitters play like batting average is king. I think it's tough to get strikeouts unless you do so wayyy out of the zone. There are hitters there who strikeouts like, five times all season.

Laika Community Moderator Posted March 2, 2021 Posted March 2, 2021 Baseball America international IFA board came out. 20 names, Jays linked to one of them. 10 Luis Meza 2021 VenezuelaC Notes: Born: Sept. 11, 2004. B-T: R-R. Ht.: 5-11. Wt.: 185. Venezuela consistently is home to top international catchers, with Diego Cartaya (Dodgers), Francisco Alvarez (Mets) and Ronnier Quintero (Cubs) in the most recent signing classes. Meza fits into that tier of players as a catcher who projects to stick behind the plate and is one of the better hitters in Venezuela. He has a loose, easy swing with a knack for being on time and strong game performance. He's a high-contact hitter who uses the whole field, with room on his broad-shouldered frame to fill out and drive the ball with more impact as he gets stronger. Meza's catch-and-throw skills are also advanced for his age. The Blue Jays are expected to sign Meza, who trains with Kander Depablos and Reynaldo Gonzalez.

Hmmm...when's the last time the Jays went after a high profile IFA catcher?
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 3, 2021 Posted March 3, 2021 Hmmm...when's the last time the Jays went after a high profile IFA catcher? Well none of the current crop were high profile. Kirk signed for three hot dogs, Moreno was $25k, and I don't even think there are reported bonuses for Javier D'Orazio (2018) and Victor Mesia (2019). The most expensive Catcher in the entire organization in terms of signing bonus was Reese McGuire by far ($2.6M). The next highest might be Riley Adams at like $550k. You might need to ask some of the older fans.

Jansen signed for like 200K out of no where in Wisconsin.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted March 4, 2021 Author Posted March 4, 2021 Jays signed Guillermo Quiroz in '98 for $1M. I think that would qualify. I was curious about Delgado as he was signed as a catcher, but his bonus was only $90K

I was actually thinking IFA's, but even draft wise, I know JPA was one a 1st rounder...and I remember we took Matt Stark 9th overall in '83 cause I kept hearing how we should've taken Clemens instead.

Guillermo Quiroz signed for 1 million -- He was one of these guys that went the 1 level a year time table because it took him a while to get over .200 Quiroz started hitting at Dunedin and had a good year in 2003 I think But he never did anything in the majors. 1 million was a lot in the late 90s.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted March 4, 2021 Posted March 4, 2021 Landing spot unknown. I could prob find some similar Greg Bird clips. You should’ve ponied up for Tatis while you had the chance
