Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2024 Posted April 19, 2024 Must be the FO's fault. They probably thrust him into pitching when he wasn't ready yet.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2024 Author Posted April 19, 2024 You know there will be several people who blame Atkins for not developing Ricky into the next Chris Sale. And there will be others that believe Atkins deserves zero blame for anything. It's what keeps these forums interesting.

How much control do you think a GM has over a pitcher getting injured? I mean Ricky had a large velo jump after joining the Jays. Were the Jays responsible for it? Is that the reason he's made of glass (it probably is)? Should they have kept him throwing 92-93 to keep him healthier and capped his ceiling as a #5 starter or bullpen arm instead of a top of the rotation option or closer? Either way - it sucks. Ricky's ceiling has come crashing down.

Given how pitcher injuries have skyrocketed I am really starting to wonder if the industry as a whole took a big swing and miss with all the babying of pitchers and light workloads in the minors are actually causing more injuries. There could be a couple of things at play: 1. You've got these guys going 3IP max and because of that they go max effort the full 3IP. 2. Guys get to the majors and are throwing 2-3 as many innings a game than what they have done through most of their time in the minors. Of course the second can't be the case for Ricky, but maybe the first point is?
mphenhef Verified Member Posted April 19, 2024 Posted April 19, 2024 They don't have to, it's that simple. Without the players consent they aren't even legally allowed to.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2024 Author Posted April 19, 2024 Without the players consent they aren't even legally allowed to. You think a team goes to every player and asks them permission to disclose an injury? I would've just assumed that sort of language is in every player contract or CBA. There are probably certain types of medical ailments that would be excluded and require a players consent but I'd guess, sprains, breaks, tears, etc are all part of of the things that they're OK to share...but I've honestly never given much thought to the legality of that disclosure.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2024 Posted April 19, 2024 Fangraphs just dropped the article on Colorado's top prospects. I'm saddened to see that Zac Veen appears to be a bust. I do remember salivating over video's of his swing before the draft. Somehow, he has no power? BA's Ben Badler did a 10 players that have caught are attention and this is Veen's writeup... Zac Veen, OF, Rockies There aren’t many positive takeaways from a season when a corner outfielder hits .209/.304/.308 in 46 games like Veen did last year in Double-A Hartford. Veen missed most of 2023 after having season-ending surgery on his wrist, so as disappointing as last year was, there’s at least a chance that playing with a damaged wrist early in the season was what had zapped his power and dragged down his overall numbers. The early returns this year have been encouraging, with Veen batting .375/.444/.719 through nine games in his return to Double-A. His six extra-base hits—including an opposite-field home run off a 94 mph fastball on Tuesday—are already more than halfway to the 11 he hit all of last season.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2024 Posted April 19, 2024 Either way - it sucks. Ricky's ceiling has come crashing down. I don't believe so, unless this injury is big news of course, but he's still the highest ranked LHP on prospect listings.

Of course the second can't be the case for Ricky, but maybe the first point is? Always an interesting debate. I think this new approach developed because they thought working the s*** out of them was already causing too many injuries. Either way, I fully expect the primary cause of this is the increased velocity and effort on every pitch. And some of that will be outside of the teams control as prospects spend the offseason at Driveline, throwing non-stop, looking for velo gains because very few pitchers are successful in the majors throwing 90-92 anymore. No idea what the solution is, but the numbers support it. Throw hard and you won't get hit hard. Just look at the number of extra base hits allowed v. 100 MPH+ pitches...and the scary thing is that hitters continue to get better and better and better v. that type of velocity!
AMS528 Verified Member Posted April 19, 2024 Posted April 19, 2024 You really could not have asked for a better start from Horwitz, Orelvis, and Barger. Horwitz and Barger probably deserve shots sooner than later with their age, and better walk to strikeout numbers. I don't really know if Horwitz is going to succeed, but his numbers have consistently been too good not to give him a decent shot at least.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 19, 2024 Posted April 19, 2024 (edited) See you next year Ricky Probably 2026, if ever. Should have traded him Atkins. We just can't have nice things around here. 2 of the top pitching prospects in baseball and we'll be lucky if either become a lockdown setup man in a Blue Jays uniform. Edited April 19, 2024 by Brownie19
RobinThicc Verified Member Posted April 19, 2024 Posted April 19, 2024 Legitimately shouldve traded him. These pitchers are just hurt too much. Blue Jays FO has shown they can build a good and reliable rotation through trade and FA. Sell these pitching prospects while they still have high value. Too late for Tiedemann
