Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2022 Posted August 9, 2022 (edited) What kind of stuff does Irv Carter have? Is he a flame thrower? BA on Carter... Ranked Toronto Blue Jays #14 prospect in 2022 Track Record: Carter teamed up with Phillies first-round pick Andrew Painter at Florida’s Calvary Christian to form one of the more fearsome pitching duos in prep baseball. A Miami commit, he was a staple on the summer showcase circuit and one of its fiercest competitors on the mound. The Blue Jays selected Carter in the fifth-round, signing him for a well above-slot bonus of $850,000. Scouting Report: Evaluators love Carter’s fierce and fiery mentality on the mound, earning the bulldog label from many. A three-pitch mix led by a low-90s fastball, that’s touched 96 mph, with spin rates in the 2,500-2,600 rpm range, Carter mixes in a split-changeup that has gotten plus grades from scouts, and a newly developed slider in the low 80s that has replaced a 12-6 curveball he used as an underclassman. Despite an intriguing pitch mix, Carter comes with question marks around his ability to start due to an extremely high-effort operation that features a pronounced head whack. Despite the explosive violence in his operation, he shows athleticism and control of his big frame often messing with timing, with Johnny Cueto-like pauses. The Future: An exciting young arm talent with starting pitcher upside but a very high level of reliever risk. If Carter can iron out his mechanics and continue to throw his three-pitch mix for strikes he has a shot to develop as a starter long term. Edited August 10, 2022 by Spanky99

Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted August 11, 2022 Posted August 11, 2022 Anyone know what Brandon Eisert's stuff is like? He's having a pretty damn good year in AAA for a 24 year old, especially since he started off poorly. Since June 1st: 12.93 K/9 3.42 BB/9 3.02 ERA 1.86 FIP 0 home runs given up 23.2 IP That's all with a .370 BABIP

"He pitches with a crossfire drop and drive delivery with a short arm path, striding towards the first base line then whipping the ball out from behind his shoulder at the last moment. This makes his pitches hard to pick up, especially for right handed batters, and allows his fringe average fastball (which tops out around 93) to play up. He complements the fastball with a solid change and slider and a curve he can throw for strikes. None of his pitches are plus, but the deception in his delivery combined with strong command have allowed the whole package to consistently get outs."

A 6-foot-2, 209-pound lefty, Eisert posted 2.31 and 2.53 ERAs for the Beavers out of the bullpen as a freshman and sophomore, and this spring has split time starting and relieving. Through 14 games and 62 innings this spring (seven starts), Eisert has once again done well, with a 2.03 ERA and a career-high strikeout rate (10.7 per nine), with 74 strikeouts to just 13 walks. Eisert has a solid four-pitch mix, enough that he could get a chance to start at the next level considering how he's done this spring, but he might work best in a relief role where his fringe-average fastball, which touches 93, could play up. Eisert has a solid slider and changeup, and also throws a curveball that he can locate, but does more with control and command than by overwhelming hitters. Eisert's collapses his lower half with drop-and-drive mechanics that includes a crossfire landing, though he hides the ball well which also allows his stuff to play up.

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 12, 2022 Posted August 12, 2022 TIL... Shi writes for Baseball America??? Anyhow decent read on our 1st round pick... Blue Jays Take It Slow With Potential Fast Riser Brandon Barriera Even though the Blue Jays plan on taking it slow with first-round lefthander Brandon Barriera, pro ball life is coming at the 18-year-old fast after he signed for a slightly above-slot $3,597,500. The 23rd overall pick was part of a two-week camp for Toronto’s 2022 draft class, a restart of baseball activities Barriera relished after voluntarily ending his season at American Heritage High before the Florida state playoffs. The Blue Jays were excited that Barriera fell to them after being projected to go higher. They had done plenty of work on him and attended all of his starts this spring, so they didn’t hesitate once he got to them. Scouting director Shane Farrell describes him as “certainly advanced,” adding that his “pitches in a vacuum are good.” “A fastball that's up to 98, and pitching in the mid 90s,” Farrell said. “His slider's a really good pitch . . . (and) he did show feel to spin and land the curveball. The changeup is a development pitch for him.” “But I think looking at the overall arsenal, it's strong and advanced for an 18-year-old.” For the time being, Barriera will engage in a slow-and-steady pitching progression. The Blue Jays don’t expect him to pitch in a game this summer. Barriera likely will progress to throwing bullpens by late summer or early fall while incorporating other changes into his overall routine. It’s a program not unlike the one that catapulted lefthander Ricky Tiedemann from 2021 third-round pick to 2022 breakout prospect. “It won't be just about throwing volume,” Farrell said of the approach with Barriera. “But it'll be about incorporating everything else developmentally that goes into the player plan. Strength and conditioning, nutrition—things like that. That will ultimately determine when he's game ready.” Barriera made an instant impression on the MLB Network telecast when after he was picked vowed to make the 22 teams that passed on him regret it. He said he is glad the Blue Jays picked him. “When you look at (the Blue Jays), they play their young guys,” Barriera said. “They're not scared to bring up their young guys. That's something that I would love to be a part of.”

InsideThePark Verified Member Posted August 12, 2022 Posted August 12, 2022 ZIMMER and essential should never be used in the same sentence. The fact we added Merrifield who can also play OF makes him very non-essential. Pretty sure he's referring to the pen arms, and with the 13 pitcher limit we can't cut Zimmer to add a pitcher. If we want to add a pitcher a different pitcher has to go down. He's saying all the non Thornton ones are essential, barring a Kukuchi DFA or something.

All the other guys with options are pretty essential. Playoff teams should have competent MLB players as depth in case of injury. The bullpen composition is really messed up with Mayza's injury. I think they have to keep Thornton up because he's the only reliever with any length. That also means Cimber is basically the honorary lefty reliever. with no true lefties. Once Stripling comes back either White or Kikuchi can slide into the long role and Thornton can go down. But that leaves a full bullpen with no optionable relievers. I really wish they had dumped Richards to a rebuilding team at the deadline. He's has big strikeout numbers and is under control for a few years, I'm sure a noncontending team has the luxury of trying to convert him into a closer with trade value. I would much rather have the roster spot to cycle optionable guys based on needs and matchups.

keggy Verified Member Posted August 12, 2022 Posted August 12, 2022 Gage? There's no one to option for Gage except Thornton, who is the only guy with length. Gage is basically a 1 inning guy. With Kikuchi and Berrios making 40% of your starts, you're guaranteed to have an occasional bullpen abuse day.
