BA writeup on J-Rod came out today. They gave him a 75 overall grade.

Scouting Report: Rodriguez is a physical presence at 6-foot-3, 210 pounds with the strength and athleticism to take over games. He destroys baseballs with 80-grade raw power and has been known to hit balls out of stadiums. His longest home runs come to his pull side, but he has the strength to drive balls out the other way with shocking ease. Rodriguez has the rare ability to get to his power without sacrificing the ability to hit for average. He is a career .331 hitter in the minors who identifies pitches well and stays short to the ball with a simple approach and direct bat path that allows him to make frequent contact in all parts of the strike zone. His swing occasionally gets too big, but he adjusts quickly within at-bats and doesn’t miss the same pitch twice. He is an adept two-strike hitter for a power hitter who stays on tough pitches and rarely strikes out. A plus-plus hitter with plus-plus game power, Rodriguez further enhances his game with his surprising speed. He is an above-average runner who is adept at reading pitchers and stealing bases, and he covers plenty of ground in all directions in right field. He is particularly advanced at ranging back on balls and keeps runners from taking extra bases with his plus, accurate arm. Rodriguez occasionally loses focus on defense, but he’s an above-average defender when he’s locked in. In addition to his physical skills, Rodriguez is an incredibly charismatic individual and a clubhouse leader. He has been bilingual since he was 18 years old and plays the game with a constant smile on his face, energizing his teammates and lighting up clubhouses with his outgoing, effervescent personality.

No, I'm not an expert. I freely admit that.

The difference is I don't go on rants about how some professional's list is the worst ever.

Since when does one sentence constitute a rant? Also, a fantasy baseball columnist is not an expert on prospects. I put little stock into what a fellow fan has to say about players he has never seen. Give me BA or MLB.com any day.

So Ken Griffey Jr in RF. Nice.

Manuel Beltre is one of my favorites in the system. He's not incredibly toolsy or twitchy, and his swing seems to lack some fluidity. But the dude is obsessed with hitting. He posts a fair bit to his social media almost every day showcasing the different hitting drills he's doing. He's already pretty advanced for 17 years old in terms of approach, and the baseball IQ and makeup seem off the charts. If he can work on his lower half and rotation a bit more, I think there's some real pull-side power waiting to be unlocked.

Don't forget hoping he grows a few inches and puts on some weight because someone 5'5' and 155 is never going to profile for much pop. At 17 there's still time of course

Well if 5'5" is what you're going with then you're in for a pleasant surprise. He's 5'9"

Yeah that's a bit better, but again, lets hope for a bit more. Would love to see at least a 6 footer to give at least some projection for power.

Would someone be a saint and post BA's Top 100 that dropped yesterday...

https://www.baseballamerica.com/rankings/2022-top-100-prospects/

Baseball America has released its top 100 prospects list. There are three Blue Jays on the list.

The Jays on the list:

#7: Gabriel Moreno

They say he’s shown “premium hitting ability, growing power and plus defense”. And that he’ll give the Jays ‘another young homegrown All-Star”. Last year he was 12th.

#62: Nate Pearson

“Pearson’s repeated injuries and inconsistent control make him a potential reliever rather than a starter, but he has excellent stuff.” Last year he was #55.

#75: Orelvis Martinez

“He is unlikely to stay at shortstop, but his bat will play just fine at third base.” Last year he was #58.

We had seven on it last year. Alex Manoah (13th) and Alejandro Kirk (85th) graduated. Austin Martin (21st) was traded, he dropped to #47. And Jordan Groshans fell off the list.

Skinny: The No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 draft, Lewis has missed the last two years between the cancellation of the minor league season in 2020 and a torn right anterior cruciate ligament in 2021. His tools and upside still stick out, but the lack of playing time and split camp on his pure hitting ability create a lot of risk as well.

Skinny: Ryan sliced his way through minor league lineups largely on his fastball, a low-90s pitch that doesn’t stand out for its velocity but befuddles hitters from his low slot and ability to ride up in the zone to miss bats. There’s some question about how much that approach will work against major league hitters, but he has a solid slider and throws plenty of strikes.

His strikeout rate soared when he got to the big leagues, though, so finding a better balance between contact and power will be critical for Duran.

Noelvi Marte

Mariners

SS

Notes:

Tools: Hit: 55 | Power: 65 | Run: 50 | Fielding: 50 | Arm: 55

Skinny: Marte has blossomed from a skinny teenager into a physical, broad-shouldered specimen as a professional. His impact power, impressive athleticism and feel for managing the strike zone make for a promising foundation if he can improve his consistency on both sides of the ball.

Headshot 2021 Triston Casas 99007 Mlb

Triston Casas

Red Sox

1B

Notes:

Tools: Hit: 55 | Power: 65 | Run: 40 | Fielding: 55 | Arm: 50

Skinny: Casas hit his way to Triple-A and starred for the U.S. Olympic team as a 21-year-old during a memorable 2021 campaign. His advanced strike-zone discipline, growing power and impressive athleticism for his size give him the potential to be an anchor of the Red Sox’s order and the club’s long-term answer at first base.

Headshot 2021 Corbin Carroll 102339 Mlb

Corbin Carroll

D-backs

OF

Notes:

Tools: Hit: 60 | Power: 55 | Run: 70 | Fielding: 60 | Arm: 45

Skinny: Carroll played only seven games before he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in 2021. If he comes back healthy, his explosive speed and athleticism, advanced feel to hit and sneaky power for his size should help him make up quickly for lost time and become a cornerstone in the D-backs outfield.
