Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2021 Author Posted August 15, 2021 Baseball America came out with a new top 100 today. Moreno came in at #10, which is pretty wild. Pearson - #50 Martinez - #53 Groshans - #76 Kirk - #78 Where is Martin?

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2021 Posted August 16, 2021 Anyone have anything on Adrian Hernandez? Hes a 21 yo RHP in New Hampshire currently and is 9th in the entire minor leagues in K/9. This is what I found without digging... Notes The 21-year-old Mexican righty induced 14 swings and misses last night, per BaseballSavant, by far the most in the game and an especially high number for someone who only pitched three innings. Of the 52 pitches Hernandez threw last night, a whopping 24 of them were changeups, which is how he garnered most of those whiffs. Interestingly, Hernandez’s changeup is of the high-spin variety and tends to finish to his glove side, which at first glance made me wonder if it was being labeled correctly by Savant, but this is indeed Hernandez’s changeup and it has been very effective. His strike-throwing has been a bit of an issue this season and there’s little body projection here, but Hernandez is a young-ish arm with an out pitch and viable arm strength, so he’s worth monitoring.

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2021 Posted August 16, 2021 Wondering if hes a potential back end of the bullpen guy given how many whiffs he gets. Long down the road, sure. That walk rate suxxxxxxx, though.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted August 16, 2021 Posted August 16, 2021 Sounds like just another reliever in the Jays system who gets lots of swing and miss, but walks way too many batters.
RustyTrombone Verified Member Posted August 16, 2021 Posted August 16, 2021 I mean the walks havent been an issue for him since May. His BB/9 since May 21 3.48. So not an issue imo. 42.6%K rate since then too
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted August 16, 2021 Posted August 16, 2021 Orelvis went 3-5 with a homer
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2021 Posted August 16, 2021 Orelvis went 3-5 with a homer Kevin Smith continues to rake also... 4 hit night 2 DBL and a SB, great to see.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2021 Posted August 16, 2021 Riley Greene to AAA No mention of Spencer Torkelson? C'mon man...
AMS528 Verified Member Posted August 16, 2021 Posted August 16, 2021 Kevin Smith continues to rake also... 4 hit night 2 DBL and a SB, great to see. He just keeps hitting for power. He's got speed, apparently solid in the infield, he's cut down the strikeouts to a reasonable level. Honestly there's really every reason to be optimistic he could turn out to be an everyday player. Recency bias obviously given Biggio has performed in the big leagues, but does Smith have a higher ceiling (and lower floor) given he probably won't suck at 3B defensively and can be pretty comfortably slotted on any given off day?

Right now that's tough to say, but defensively at 3rd sounds like he's ready, Biggio's a 2nd baseman, moving to third and battling these injuries all season in his neck and back is concerning, it seems they might hold off on promoting him(Smith) this season or he'd have been called up when Biggio went on the IL, Valera should not be playing this much, whether Bo was banged up or not. Yes, I certainly do think Smith is an everyday player, but he needs a cup of coffee so we can see what he has when these injuries come up.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2021 Posted August 16, 2021 The fact that the team hasn't promoted Smith with Biggio's injury is baffling to me. Valera is a 30 year old minor league journeyman who is getting way too much playing time. If they were not going to give Espinal the everyday 3B spot with Biggio's injury, then they should have absolutely called up Smith weeks ago. The 40 man roster spot is insignificant since they could have just DFA'd Valera to make room.

It really doesn't make much sense to wait until September to call up a guy who has clearly performed well enough to get a shot. It's not as if we care about his service time here.

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2021 Posted August 16, 2021 No mention of Spencer Torkelson? C'mon man... He obviously must own Greene and not Tork. I gotta say I was pleasantly pleased to see the update on Fantrax. Last update I saw was he hadn’t hit a HR for 20 days and had some s***** slash lines for the period. DET has nice pieces coming through

It's not as if we care about his service time here. He also has to be added to the 40 man roster at the end of the season or be exposed in the Rule 5. There's really no reason not to have him up with the team. Keeping him down only makes sense if they feel he's not going to help the club, and certainly he's not a lock to be better than Espinal for the rest of the season, but that excuse flies out the window when Valera is getting the bulk of the 3B time instead.
