19 year old catcher Gabriel Moreno with another 3 hit game today in Lansing.

He’s batting .353 with 1.000 OPS in 4 games

Switch hitting third basemen Cullen Large with another good game, is maintaining an OPS .900 and 160 wRC+ over 40 games in Dunedin. Should be getting the promotion call soon I think.

Josh Winckowzki pitched another good game recently

7.0 IP, 10 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K

ERA 1.64, FIP 2.93, xFIP 3.49 in 8 starts.

Still a 61.3% ground ball rate

Jackson Rees has been ridiculous. Bullpen arm. A bit old for Lansing, should be promoted soon.

17 IP and 10 games, ERA 0.53, FIP 0.50, xFIP 0.71

15.88 K/9, 1.59 BB/9

30 K/3 BB

69% GB%

Has given up 1 ER in 63 batters faced.

This is better than following the Jays box scores. Thanks BR

Not surprisingly - it looks like Tim Tebow may fizzle out in AAA. I wonder if they give him a token call up and at bat just to say he made it?

Curious to see how this Brandon McKay situations plays out. His arm looks to be well ahead of his bat right now. Do you hold him back and try and let his bat catch up? Or do you keep pushing him up because pitchers have a limited shelf life and you just hope that somehow his bat catches up to the point he can actually do both?

wRC+ of only 39 over 90 PA's in AA. Absolutely no power (2 xbh)

curious to see how this plays out.

There is one obvious thing here...taking batting practice is not at all affecting his pitching. So why not continue allowing him to swing? But his bat will not change when he starts pitching in the majors anymore. I fully expect them to add him into the bullpen this year

Any idea how they are using him offensively? Is he DH'ing a few times a week?

It's been 160 PA now and Biggio's K-rate is still at 15%

That's quite a dramatic drop from last season in AA (26%). Even better news is that he's kept his walk rate more or less the same and still has a .208 ISO.

Yeah if they are out of it in September I could see him getting a 40 man callup and then calling it a career after a few ABs.

I know the idea of him playing baseball was widely panned but I gotta say I'm pretty damn impressed with him. He hadn't played competitive baseball since high school, took more than 10 years off, and ends up being an average bat in AA. Remarkable athlete.

It's very impressive, I definitely never expected him to be more than a sideshow in the low minors.

BlueJayMatt (Toronto):

I know you guys are big fans of Alejandro "El Capitan" Kirk, what are you hearing from scouts? How is the framing and defense coming along? The plate discipline and approach for such a young player seems elite.

Kyle Glaser: Josh Norris is chairman of the fan club. I haven't seen Kirk for myself but I've made some calls on him. To be honest, the scouts I've spoken with are not high on him. They see a future AL 1B/DH type, except he's too short to play 1B. He's got a good swing and gets the barrel to the ball - that will carry him. The scouts I've spoken to just see him as a hard guy to fit on a roster because they don't see the catching skills.

James (Buffalo):

What are the chances Alejandro Kirk stays at catcher? And how special is that bat?

Kyle Glaser: I had an evaluator put a 20 on his catching (the worst possible grade on a 20-to-80 scale)...so yeah, that's where that is.

The only thing worse than scouts are internet prospectors who cite lone scouts and refer to them as "evaluators".

Watch video of him catching and tell me he's bad.

That is so objectively awful

Patrick Murphy scratched from scheduled start tonight

Any reason given? Doesn't sound like a call-up situation...

Yennsy Diaz: 7IP 2H 0R 8K 98 pitches

Brock Lundquist: 2-for-5, no hitting .261/.367/.378 after a slow start in AA.

Was there a holiday? Maybe it was a scheduled day off.

Isnt .378 slugging really bad for AA for a 23 year old

Depends on a lot of things. Look at his life time rates, and overall line. He's a .270 .370 .430 hitter in the minors. Not a huge amount of power but a bit. His .378 slugging percentage could be up 50 points with a hot week.

Posted (edited)

I wouldn’t say he’s strictly a doubles hitter like the numbers suggest, but he clearly made some adjustments since Dunedin and is making better contact (albeit lots of ground balls) and less power. Thought it might be the FSL effect but he also only has 1 homer in NH.

Lundquist is closer to a 10-15 HR guy than 20-25.

His last 23 games: .351/.467/.541, OPS 1.007

26 hits, 7 doubles, 2 triple, 1 homer

16 walks, 17 strikeouts

His SLG should be closer to .430-.450 by the end of the year

Some quick scouting reports on AA guys by 2080 baseball

Nate Pearson, RHP, Toronto Blue Jays (New Hampshire Fisher Cats)

Improved control and off-speed consistency have led to a dominant start to 2019; frontline starter upside with the power stuff to close games if he needs a fallback.

Kevin Smith, INF, Toronto Blue Jays (New Hampshire Fisher Cats)

Pull-heavy, power-focused approach has struggled so far in first taste of Double-A; still shows the baseline offensive tools to be a bat-first everyday infielder with adjustments.

Patrick Murphy, RHP, Toronto Blue Jays (New Hampshire Fisher Cats)

Physical frame with high-90s fastball and flashes of above-average curveball; lack of third pitch and injury history likely point to setup relief role long-term.

He had a slow start, and it's not entirely uncommon for guys to struggle in their first taste of AA. He's been really hot in May.

In April (20 games): .176/.291/.265 10BB 25K

In May (15 games): .373/.467/.529 9BB 11K

PCL or not, those numbers are redonkulous, Christian Walker best be keeping his bat up, but his BABIP shows regression is in the cards.
