Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted May 4, 2019 Posted May 4, 2019 Groshans on the 7 day IL, not sure for what.
King Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 Cavan Biggios rise from slap hitting middle infielder to a power bat with more walks than Ks has been nothing short of incredible.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 Yordan Alvarez looks ready for the bigs...yikes.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 He’s got to be better than Hanson as the utility player! DFA Brito and call up Gurriel please.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 He’s got to be better than Hanson as the utility player! DFA Brito and call up Gurriel please. When Brito is DFA'ed, it needs to be Biggio on the shuttle north
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 When Brito is DFA'ed, it needs to be Biggio on the shuttle north Nah, keep Biggio as an infielder rather than a utility player. Biggio can replace Sogard once he reverts to a pumpkin or get a call when there is an injury.

Biggio can replace Sogard once he reverts to a pumpkin or get a call when there is an injury. Biggio needs to be up facing big league pitching. This is what's best for his development and to see what you have in the player. He's fine as a utility guy in year one. Who knows. outfield might be his best position.

BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 It’s nice to know he can spot the outfield but you really want to keep Biggio at 2B if possible. Not only is that his most comfortable spot, that’s where he has a chance to be more than just average. I rather have a slight above average 2B than a guy that plays mediocre everywhere. On the other hand, Gurriel has been below average everywhere. The OF experiment in the minors could do him some good. If his glove and range is fine, and throwing accuracy is his only issue, LF might be his best spot long term unless you want him at 1B. He’s too young to just give up on his bat.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 I find it so interesting that guys on this board who think they are God's gift to scouting/data analysis, interpreting minor league numbers and player development are now doling out fellatio on some players like giving out candy at Halloween. I am not saying this in a Tercet way like I am smarter or know anything more than any other posters. However, I am talking about the smug condescending attitude of a lot of the so called "respected posters" i.e analytics clique/popular posters. I was torn apart on here last year for suggesting my comp for Biggio was Zobrist. I was talked down to told he might be a fringe 4th IF or OF etc.. Same for Riley Adams and SRF last year, when I said Riley was my surprise and SRF was my bust.... You would have thought I hung a Nazi flag outside my house.. How dare I challenge that I didn't think SRF is the next Ace and he will be a bust, look at his Blah, blah, blah, blah.. .. Got the same s*** for Tellez and Aceucki.. I know you all miss Aceucki now and Rowdy has shown at least he deserves a spot on the ML roster. AGAIN, not talking about so much if someone was right or wrong on prospects.. Only that some of you guys on here you were total A- holes and acting like self-inflated know it alls and telling us underlings what is what.. Now the same posters are trying to get to the front of the line to put these guys in their mouth.

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 a little early to take a victory lap on your Zobrist comp just yet I agree with that 100%... However, just the fact that it is not being discussed in the same vein as Bigfoot, Unicorns, Chupacabra etc is a positive.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 Zobrist played SS, stole bases, barely hit 20 homers a year and had like a 15% K rate. How is that Biggio? Zobrist played the majority of his games at 2b and as a corner OF. Biggio has cut down his K rate and increased his OBP and power. Also, that was a different time for a 15% K rate... Highly doubt you will see much of that in this day and age when higher K rates are considered the norm. Edit to add, Biggio is not slow... he played WR when he played football.. and had 20 SB last year.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 Zobrist played SS, stole bases, barely hit 20 homers a year and had like a 15% K rate. How is that Biggio? 3-5 WAR a year playing multiple positions. not an exact comp this would be the 90 percentile outcome of course
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 If you want a 90 percentile multi-position guy, it's probably closer to Matt Carpenter than Zobrist IMO. Did Carp ever play the OF? I agree that Zobrist and Biggio don't have the same profile offensively or defensively.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 I hear that the Jays see Biggio as a 1B long-term and they are moving him around to try to find something that delays the move to 1B. He turns 2 at 2B well but his range is poor and his hands are stone. Biggio is still working on becoming a different hitter. He has been a TTO even when it's going well. This year he's been choking up on the bat with 2 strikes and getting the ball in play more. His numbers last year were inflated by how he feasted on younger pitchers in a small sample size. This year he's only faced pitchers older and is passing that test. He also had a huge start last year though and then was pretty average after June 1. If you believe he's really Zobrist (even though Mark Reynolds is probably the better comp) than you should be happy to wait for the super 2 deadline in about 40 days.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 I saw that he had 6 starts at 1st and was wondering what was going on. Also getting some run at 3B but only 2 games in the OF. A move to first really hurts his value, I wish he could at least give the OF a try. Does he have a poor arm or something? Given his stolen base numbers you'd think he'd at least have somewhat adequate range out there.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 When he first came up he played a few games there. I don't really see how playing the OF is like one of the biggest comparison points for Biggio. Most guys who can run and tie their shoes can play LF. I'm sure Carpenter would have played LF if he wasn't competent at more important positions like 3B and 2B. The bigger comparison is between the bats. Line drive vs. Fly ball is the biggest difference between them. Biggio is never going to be doubles machine but the comp makes a lot of sense.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 So you do agree with me. If the Jays think he's a really good major leaguer than at this point the Super two deadline makes sense. I just happen to think they are still working on things with him and they want those things to develop in the minors. Mostly to do with his defense.

I think his bat is ready, but I think they genuinely want some more seasoning on D in the minors. And some more versatility.

Given his stolen base numbers you'd think he'd at least have somewhat adequate range out there. It's supposedly his footwork. He puts himself in bad throwing positions. I won't say it's to his left or to his right he does really poorly cause I honestly can't remember. I know listening to a scout is poor form around here...but this was a scout in his 20's so maybe that is acceptable. Regardless if the bat continues it won't matter where he ends up. For now he's a 2b though, and supposedly 3B is just not an option.

It's not an exact match, but I understand the comparison. Biggio plays 1st, 2nd and third and has played the outfield a bit and looks like he will get more time there. Zobrist played short, but only 13.8% of his mlb gamers were at short. Biggio stole 20 bags last year. His K rate is higher, but he's cut it to 16.8% this year so that isn't that far off Zobrist. Walk rates are both very high for both players. Biggio might have a bit more pop if last year's and this year's start is a sign of things to come. Regardless, Biggio should be up.

Bringing him up now, still makes no sense to me, it should be Gurriel. Let Biggio slide past super 2.
