[h=1]Each team's best non-Top 100 prospect[/h]

Blue Jays: Kevin Smith, SS/3B

The 2017 fourth-rounder tweaked his swing and approach after his pro debut and put up huge numbers in his first full season, hitting .302/.358/.528 with 25 home runs and 31 doubles in 129 games between two levels. He also swiped 29 bases, earning him distinction as one of six 20-20 players in the Minors, and impressed defensively on the left side of the infield. The Blue Jays love everything about Smith's game and rave about his capacity for making adjustments, viewing the 22-year-old as a future impact player for the organization.

SS prospect depth is nuts now because every organization realizes that their future 3B and 2B will likely have been SS prospects.

So this is basically a list of SS+3B+2B prospects.

Yeah SS depth is always nuts because most good prospects start out there. Half of these guys will move over to 3B, 2B or CF unless they just flat out become fat.

Cuban outfielder Victor Victor Mesa signed with the Marlins in October for $5.25 million.

One month later, 24-year-old outfielder Harold Ramirez signed with the Marlins for a bonus of $25,000 in what could be a steal for Miami.

Playing for the Blue Jays organization last year, Ramirez hit .320 and won the Double-A Eastern League batting title. He followed that up by hitting .381/.459/.556 and winning the Venezuelan League batting crown this winter.

Despite ranking among the EL leader in hits, doubles and total bases last season, Ramirez qualified as a minor league free agent in November when Toronto decided not to add him to its 40-man roster.

Ramirez said he received offers from 15 organizations. In an effort to re-sign him, the Blue Jays offered the largest bonus at $32,000—but Ramirez chose the Marlins.

"I left money on the table,” he said. "I believe the Marlins are giving me the biggest opportunity.”

Ramirez said he is playing for his wife, their 2-year-old son Elian and the rest of their family in Cartagena, Colombia.

Even though soccer is religion in Colombia, Ramirez’s mom was a third baseman in softball and his dad was an outfielder in baseball.

Ramirez followed in their cleat marks and signed with the Pirates in 2011. The Blue Jays acquired him in 2016, and his breakthrough came last season, when he delivered career highs in doubles (37), home runs (11) and RBIs (70). He also stole 16 bases in 18 attempts and compiled an .836 OPS.

Ramirez's performance in Venezuela made the Marlins’ investment look even smarter. He collected 18 extra-base hits in 44 games and compiled a 1.016 OPS.

"I worked on using my legs more in my swing and getting the ball up in the air,” Ramirez said in Spanish when asked to describe his improvement. "Also, I play aggressively all the time. I run the bases hard, and I don’t like to lose.”

At 5-foot-10, 220 pounds, Ramirez said his plan is to skip Triple-A and earn a corner outfield spot on the Marlins' big league roster this spring.

I think Orelvis is considered a SS too if I'm not mistaken... But didn't make this cut. Has Groshans already been moved off SS?

Yeah Groshans spent half his games at third. He’s not going to play short for long.

I would put Orelvis over Hiraldo (as a prospect generally but also here because Hiraldo ain’t a shortstop either)

Here's a neat little report on Danny Jansen:

I'm not sure if it's just the acoustics of the room, but that sound off the bat is really nice.

I tried posting the archive earlier but I couldn't access it. I'll try and get Law's Top 100 up tonight or tomorrow.

Yes, I would like to bother you again, for this, please! :P

Here are his write ups

Vlad Guerrero Jr - I ranked him second but it was probably too high. A fat third basemen who should of been a DH yesterday isn't the best prospect in baseball. Tatis is as good with the bat, and can play on the field. There are also injury concerns, which Tatis doesn't have. Other than a fluke injury that cost him a couple of months Tatis knows how to stay on the field. Guerrero on the other hand missed several weeks but his injuries were not flukes. Guerrero does have an elite k-rate, but it will make little difference. Even though Tatis will strike out twice as much and walk half as much, Tatis still has the advantage here, as when Tatis is striking out Guerrero will simply be hitting double play balls into the shift. I almost never believe in the base clogging theory, but Guerrero is a rare exception. He may walk 100 times a year, but it will take 3 singles to get him around. When you factor in the double plays and base clogging Tatis will have more value with a 30-120 bb/k ratio than Guerrero would with a 100-60. (Truth be told I have Guerrero ranked 32nd, however I fudged the ranking a bit to avoid having my in box flooded by insufferable Blue Jays fans).

Bo Bichette - 92nd - Truth be told he's a non-prospect. I saw him play 5 times last year, and I can guarantee that he won't stick at short and maybe not at second. His average dropped 80 points against better defenses and his power never really showed up. In the majors he projects as a .260 hitter, with 20 walks and 10 homers.

That's pretty much it...

It took me a while before I realized that was satire.

More from the Keith Law chat

Brad from London, Ontario - Keith, you say that Tatis' injury is a fluke, but Guerrero's is a sign of more to come?? Why?? I thought both were expected to be fine for Spring Training?? In fact Guerrero came back from his injury right on time and looked great the second half.

Keith - "Tatis simply slid awkwardly and strained his thumb. Not the kind of thing that is likely to be chronic or happen again. Tatis is a graceful athlete and will be careful to be more controlled in the future. This is a learning experience for him and he will be disciplined on the bases going forward. Guerrero on the other hand ran over first base awkwardly and strained his knee. I talked to a scout who was there and he said that Guerrero stumbled over the bag because he is literally too fat to get out of his own way. That's not going to fix itself and will likely lead to more injuries."

Is there a way to use the ignore feature for any post with Keith Law in it? Geez man, why do people keep quoting that guy?

The fact that you actually think that is Keith Law just goes to show how little credibility he has.

you do realize that Olerud is making the stuff up right????

Lol, I read the Thanos post and not the one he was quoting.

My point still stands though. Stop quoting Keith Law. Don't even type his name out in parody. Please?

Whatever happened to Keith to make him hate the Blue Jays so much?? I know he worked for JPR, and it didn't work out. However that was like 2 administrations ago. Maybe he didn't like AA because they overlapped as underlings... but why hate the Shapiro admin?

Also who do you think is a better Scout Keith Law or Tercet?? Both have a keen eye and can see the flaws that the rest of us can't, but out of the two who is more astute?? If a guy misses a down and away slider thrown by an overrated Pitcher, Keith and Tercet can instantly tell that both the Pitcher (missed his spot) and hitter (can only hit meatballs) are done for.
