Don't forget Nate Pearson. He could have the most potential out of anyone.

 

Pearson definitely has the best potential out of all them. Reason I didn't mention him is because he's further down the pipeline then the rest, but he could move through the system pretty quick as a JuCo guy. Worst case scenario, the kids fastball will make him a solid 'pen arm. Best case scenario, he's Justin Verlander.

 

Borucki another fantastic outing: 7IP 2H 0ER 0BB 7K. Drops his AA ERA to 1.94 in 7 starts. I hope we get to see a start or two out of him in September.

Danny Jansen is quietly having one of the best seasons of any player in minor league baseball. In 97 games split between three levels, the 22-year-old Toronto Blue Jays catching prospect is slashing .339/.414/.510 — and he’s not slowing down. In 52 plate appearances since being promoted to Triple-A Buffalo, he’s hit a Ruthian .455/.538/.795.

 

When Jansen appeared in my July 1 Notes column, Blue Jays farm director Gil Kim was quoted as saying the youngster is “really opening up some eyes,” and that he is “one of the most-improved players in the system.”

 

 

Jansen’s eyes are a big reason for that improvement. Four years after being drafted out of an Appleton, Wisconsin high school, in the 16th round, he’s receiving optometrical assistance.

 

“Last year, I realized that things weren’t as clear anymore, so after the season I went to the eye doctor,” explained Jansen. “He told me I had astigmatism, so I got a prescription and started wearing glasses last fall. I’m seeing everything so clear now, like a normal person with good eyes would.”

 

The former Appleton West Terror doesn’t wear contacts, which makes him the rare backstop who dons glasses behind his mask. He sees at least one advantage to that. “Dirt doesn’t get in my eyes,” Jansen explained with a knowing nod.

 

Vision hasn’t been his only above-the-neck improvement.

 

 

“My mindset is different,” Jansen told me. “I’ve stopped thinking about my mechanics. That’s a huge thing right there. I’d gotten in a trap the last few years where I tried to be somebody I wasn’t. This year I decided I was just going to be me, see the ball, and compete.”

 

It has been said that a baseball looks like a beachball to a hitter who is hot, and while Jansen didn’t make any such observation, the 15 for 28 streak he was on when we spoke on Wednesday suggests that it probably does. As for the numbers themselves, does he ever blink his eyes to make sure he’s not dreaming?

 

“Yeah, it’s definitely different,” admitted Jansen. “I’ve never really had this kind of success before. I’m confident right now, but really, I’m just trying to be level-headed, and trying to get better.”

Is Christian Lopes any good defensively? He's kind of grinded through the minor league system for years figuring out each level and hitting decently enough. Does he have a shot at being a useful utility infielder type guy?

I'd rather see him getting starts than Koehler, Anderson, Bolsinger, Biagini or even Sanchez. He's thrown 144 innings but that's only a small increase from last year. Chances are it's just in the pen we'll see him though...or they will just shut him down and not even call him up.

Definitely, give the guy some starts and maybe he shows enough to be considered as rotation depth heading into ST.

I realise it's a very SSS, but what's up with Reese McGuire? wRC+ of 143 over 114 PA's. BABIP is only 0.291. BB%/K% are both on par with his career numbers, but his ISO is .245 (after being about 0.070 for his career).

 

Has anyone caught any stories on changes he's made? or is this just a hot streak.

Anyone know the playoff procedure for the FSL? Dunedin has been pretty average lately and not sure how good is their playoff position. I know it says playoff procedure details on the website but not entirely clear on it.

They split the seasons into two halves, the winner of each division of the first half and the second half face each-other in the first round of the playoffs (4-teams total). If the team that won the division in the first half also wins the division in the second half, then they take the team with the second-best overall record as the second seed of the playoffs for each division.

It would be a great player development story if Carlos Ramirez could become a serviceable MLB reliever. A converted position player.. Hasn't allowed an earned run this year across 36 innings in AA and AAA.

Nah, he hadn't played for nearly 2 years and was injured for a good chunk of this year, more playing time the better. It wouldn't surprise me if they send him to the DWL if he agreed to it, after the AFL, obviously.

Agree with you that he needs the playing time, but I don't think he'll get a September call up. I suspect the injury has put him at least 6 months behind schedule on ETA for the majors.

 

I think they're more likely to use September to ease Travis back from injury.

We were not going to see him in September anyways, but his inclusion in the AFL has no bearing on that whatsoever.
