You know, Gibby and not playing his best players after we clinched is BS. Just my opinion.

If anyone had been injured at all in either of those games we'd be calling for Gibbons' head. After 155 games, do you really want your guys playing a straight up double header? The decision is totally defensible.

And the next day's hurricane can't be laid on Gibbons by any means. No way you send your regulars out in that muck like that only 12 hours after a double header. The backups shouldn't have even been playing, frankly. That game was an injury that luckily didn't happen.

Jays are 93-68 with second seed all locked up for the postseason. There's still a shot for for no. 1, but Gibbons decisions were perfectly defensible. It might cost a game 7 @ home in the ALCS and will mean facing a more rested team in the ALDS. It was a reasonable gamble to take.

It's amazing that the Jays even got to this position with KC. When you look at how far back they were, who would have thought there was even a chance. KC had the entire year of playing good ball, Jays had to make up for that in just two months. Incredible that they're even in the picture.

Are you ppl still bitching about not playing the regulars on Thursday?

The Jays played a doubleheader on Wednesday. The A regulars played in the 1st game. Even though they sat for the 2nd game, they still played on that day, so they never got any rest until Thursday.

So if we can win tomorrow and KC loses we still are first AL seed?

Like that line in Dumb and Dumber...."so you're sayin' there is still a chance?"

Up until the end of August Osuna had stats of 10.3 K/9, 0.47 HR/9, 4.5% HR/FB, 1.87 ERA, 2.20 FIP - http://www.fangraphs.com/statsd.aspx?playerid=13764&position=P&type=&gds=2015-04-08&gde=2015-08-28&season= ;

and from the start of September up until yesterday (Oct 2) 6.35 K/9, 3.18 HR/9, 30.8% HR/FB, 4.76 ERA, 6.84 FIP - http://www.fangraphs.com/statsd.aspx?playerid=13764&position=P&type=&gds=2015-09-01&gde=2015-10-02&season=

Hopefully the 4 day rest between the final regular season game and the first playoff game will be good for Osuna. All players go through rough patches, I am still confident that Osuna will come back strong after the 4 day rest period.

The Blue Jays have been taking it easy since they won the AL East, but once they start the playoffs they will be playing with more intensity again.

^ this. Post Cecils numbers since mid August.

We don't have the luxury of closer labels in the playoffs with a struggling 20 year old rookie, much as I like what the kid has done for us and will do in the playoffs and the future.

And Cecil since Aug1 14.21 k/9 0HR 0.00ERA .14FIP .47 BB/9.

Stat line of 19IP 9H 1BB 30SO. That' unbelievable.

Those numbers are insane.

Uh, several of us have been posting the exact same thing before him.

His HR/FB% was unsustainable, but jesus those September stats are ugly. Got to get it together Osuna!

I absolutely hate the fact that I'm agreeing with a Gibbons decision, but yeah, there was nothing wrong with playing the minor league suck squad in game 2 of the double header and the following day. They essentially had to play 3 games in 20 hours. Most of the guys are probably beat up and could have used the day off.

Last time he gave up runs was June 21, 4 against the O's.

Since then: 31IP 17H 0ER 43SO 4BB, 0.68WHIP

Don't think he's gotten enough credit.

Yeah. People are acting like 3 games = 3 days when in reality it was 3 games within 24 hours, the third of which being in extremely poor conditions. It sucks, but those were the circumstances they faced. The players aren't machines.

That striking out of the side against the Yankees in the first game of the series in Toronto a couple weeks back might be the biggest moment of the season.

I take back what I said in my previous post.

Cecil has been amazing. I hope that in the playoffs he will be left in to finish games if the opportunity arises (as opposed to taking him out for the final one or two outs)

Hope you feel the same way after we get hammered by Texas!!!!!

Yes, it made sense to rest them in the final two games in such bad conditions. However, they had so many players on the bench that they could have pinch hit with players such as Encaracion, Bautista, Martin, Smoak ... late in the games. The last game in Baltimore when most players were hung-over was unprofessional in my opinion.

Posted
I still think we could have taken a rotation approach for each of the Baltimore games to balance out the squad more rather than going all out AAA squad, but if Gibby saw HFA as not being worthy of braving that out, then I'd say fair enough and that's that. I'd have to think that guys are really more beat up than what it seems to us from the outside right now.

What if we played the regulars in those games in Baltimore and lost to the Yankees or Astros/Angels in the ALDS?

The playoffs in baseball are unpredictable. Just get in and then the rest will sort itself out. If the Jays end up losing to the Rangers, then the Rangers had the better week that week. That's what it comes down to some times.

It should be really interesting if there was to be another save situation tm... would Gibby bring out Osuna again? I'm sure Osuna's still the closer in his mind, and if so he'd probably want to give Osuna a chance to redeem himself and head into the playoffs with more confidence.

Idk if Gibby would pitch Osuna 3 days in a row. Maybe.

True, I forgot that he actually pitched in the first game as well, although it was only for 1/3 of an inning on 7 pitches. But then I guess he did make over 20+ pitches tonight so while that's no Shawn Tolleson over the past 5 games type usage, I guess it wouldn't be worth the risk. Hopefully the 4 day break will enable him to reset everything mentally and give him enough rest physically to prepare himself for the ALDS.

This isn't the try league this is get the job done league. In tight situations you go to your best reliever. That isn't Roberto Osuna. Closers don't exist in the playoffs. Especially ones with 5 minutes of success.

I agree with that reasoning personally but we all know how much Gibby is fixated on specific roles for his players this year... I just can't see him changing his stance on that for the playoffs.

There's no doubt that Cecil has been _the_ lights out guy coming out of the pen in the stretch. The problem with Cecil being the de-facto closer is that he is coming into the game in the 9th. What do we do when we have a lefty-lefty matchup before the 9th?

Why not he was willing to do it earlier in the year. I'm not saying Osuna isn't going to help us in the playoffs because he probably will but defined roles and rest goes out the window. It shifts to the hot hands and doing whatever it takes to win.
