The only clarification I would offer here is that while we are not entitled to free speech, that is what we are generally looking for in an online forum. Its not that its owed to us, its that if speech is restricted too much we will want to find a new board, and we all generally like the community we all built here.

 

This is totally wrong, there is no such thing as free speech on a moderated message board anywhere....if that's what you seek you will be looking forever.

The rules here aren't particularly harsh, and it's the "piling on" that tends to result in bans. I've said some truly ridiculous/offensive/drunk things on this board before I was voted in as a mod (thanks for that, by the way, f***ers!) and I did not get a single warning PM, ban or infraction, so there is a lot of wiggle room to get away with general tomfoolery and shenanigans, just don't pile the f*** on when a mod is trying to keep order, particularly not publicly.

 

Deadpool - I appreciate your hard work. I am in the same boat in that I've said ridiculous things, argued with people, called them incompetent, they've called me the same... all in good fun I assume, and I've never got banned.

 

However it seems others aren't getting the same leash... every once and a while I'll be participating in a conversation or thread that seems innocent to me and it disappears. That doesn't quite sit right.

I read all the time, because people on this board usually have all the up to date info. Very seldom post.

 

But it seems to me that some are making a mountain out of a molehill. You have all forgotten why you left the original message board. It got trolled until it was unreadable.

 

Stop complaining about each other, and celebrate the Jays, and things will fix themselves.

We try to strike a balance. If people are allowed to do/say whatever they want, then it can become a hostile environment which can and will drive users, both new and old, away. Everyone from the super smart SABR nerds to the "pitcher winz give us valuable information, yay saves!" types should be welcome to post here and should be treated reasonably (ie. if they're saying s*** to troll, or they're being antagonistic they can be dressed down, but if they're interested in learning and having respectful discussions they shouldn't be called names and driven away.)

First of all, I'm the least hard working of the mods around here... Second of all a lot of that is "history" related. People who have broken the rules or have grated on mods in the past are less likely to get the same leeway. Is it necessarily fair? I dunno, but mods are people too (sort of, we do have to accept a moderate number of cybernetic implants when we take the job...) so we're imperfect creatures.

I am 61 years old and I have owned several websites with forums (still have one with several members) and I have been a moderator on several forums for many years and part of this forum from the very beginning. From my observations I will say that O2 does NOT have the personality to be a mod, definitely not. He is vengeful and can't wait to ban people while he antagonizes them. It's a one way street with him when you try to explain something, he's like, my way or the highway. He is on a very strong power trip.

 

I think the reason why he is not removed as a moderator may be due to the fact that he is also a donator here. The owner of this forum can't go on and ignore the fact that so many posters are complaining about ONE moderator in particular. His original post just indicates to me that he will support that moderator no matter what he does. just my opinion.

I think the issue is, a mod should be looking to deescalate a situation, not add fuel to it. Also, if I'm not mistaken, two of the mass bannings have come after the mod has made offensive posts without provocation themselves, then got upset when they were (rightfully) called on it.

 

It would also be really helpful if mods could be added to the ignore list (for posts, obviously not for PMs since they still need to mod). A one day wait period after you sign up with a new account, before you can post, would also eliminate a large portion of the problem.

The rules here are pretty lenient. I'm guilty of trolling and not being so nice to people myself. I've never received a single warning or ban. There are some message boards where I would've been long gone. The thing with me is I don't continue going on and on with it and that seems to be the issue.. not knowing when to stop, added to the fact that the mod in question already has a bullseye on certain people because of past incidents. It's a recipe for disaster. I can definitely see both sides of what is going on here, though. The problem is that one group of posters has an issue not with the overall moderating but with one mod in particular, and it's become clear that the problem is not going away and just comes to a head repeatedly. It's just a matter of how the owner decides to proceed and what he deems is best for the board. Personally, I really have no issues with anyone here.. I don't like everything that gets posted obviously but I tolerate it. I would hate to lose the guys that are getting banned and hopefully they come back and some solution can be found. This place would not be the same without them and I would honestly be less likely to post myself.

I've not been on here long - so I don't know the entire history.

 

IMO there is clearly fault on both sides.... o2 multiple banning isn't working or helping the situation.

 

King overreacting to anything o2 posts that could be even slightly deemed offensive.

 

As many claim, most can troll post and be a little unkind to others, I feel king reports a post from o2 that he would have thanked had Boxy posted it.

 

Didn't we have this over the Chins and a telephone directory a couple of months ago.

 

Maybe if o2 ignores king if he picks up on anything he posts, and doesn't use the ban button when things are escalating on the board but let someone else from the mod hottub deal with the issues.

 

As with every dispute until both sides acknowledge their own misdeeds then an amicable solution is unlikely to be ever reached. If both sides dig in for the win then inevitably nobody does.

 

These are the great times for Jays fans and yet its best messageboard descends to this. And yet we ridicule the O's hangout?

It's funny how the same posters keep complaining, when based on original rules they should have been gone permanently or for a very long time. Mods have ultimate say and luckily on here they are really lenient. If we were on other boards more than half the people here would keep getting banned. Respect the mods and they will respect you. It's the freaking postseason in a week. It's time we all cheer for the Blue Jays and not fight each other.

Just my opinion but I think everything that needs to be and could be said on this has been. Some great points all round not to be dismissed.

 

But now its been beat to death with a cudgel and stomped on ad nausea. The Mods group and Juiced have it all under advisement.

 

Love to see this locked and we all move on (subject to changes they make) to focus on cheering for our beloved Jays as the hit a big series for #1 seed overall in the AL and the playoffs!
