JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 no, we'd have yan gomes, hechavarria, syndergaard, etc. With a perpetual contender for the al east (at a fraction of the cost) instead of what's likely just a half year window of contention right now. lol
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 AA could leave but getting a president in place now rather than in the off-season gives the team the best chance of retaining him. I don't think he wants to leave but I think he probably would leave if no one was in place to secure his future. This should work out just fine.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 AA didn't start making saber type of moves until this past off-season. Prior to that he was looking at home runs, speed, and ERA. So yes, this organization does value analytics to some degree but it was a recent change. If they valued it earlier, maybe they don't make the ridiculous Marlins/Dickey trades.
metafour Verified Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 I meant the offensive strikeout. But yes the Indians certainly built pitching staffs with the K in mind. They did break the all-time record last year and are on pace to shatter that this year. You have to figure that Shapiro is a fan of pitchers who strikeout batters. Every team likes pitchers who can produce strikeouts. Shapiro traded Victor Martinez for a package that was built solely around Justin Masterson.

Why you so concerned about money? I'd much rather have Martin, Tulo and Donaldson regardless of the cost. With proper management, I see no reason why this team can't compete for the next few years.

League for Morrow, Sea Bass for Yunel, junk for Rasmus, Marcum for Lawrie, all of that awesome draft pick gaming - these things were widely and appropriately applauded. And then he got antsy and impatient and made the Marlins and Mets trades...
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Under Shapiro would we have acquired Martin Donaldson Tulo Travis Donaldson - yes Travis - yes Martin - maybe Tulo - probably not

The only two hurdles next year will be failure to bolster the rotation with the departure of Buehrle and Price, and possible attrition for the old core. 2016 should be a very good season.

You don't need a bunch of nerds to tell you that Donaldson, Martin, Price and Tulo are good players.

Insert Stroman in Buehrles spot without any drop off, as for Price....now that's really tough! But the teams depth at pitching is really really thin at the ML level and the high minors so IMHo some FA signings will need to be made. I suspect with the teams defence (and offence) that attracting free agents could be easier than years past.
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 I think the interest he had in Martin was related to the nerds. Other three are as you said Yeah, probably. You take his obviously great offensive numbers, great league-wide defensive reputation, and the fact that the nerd in the broom closet says he's a good framer and basically write a blank cheque.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 From Ken Rosenthal I can't find this. Link?

Yes, probably, although if you squint you can sort of see some appreciation for modern value (WAR), value vs. contract analysis, modern defensive stats, team win curve position, etc.

With that said, we can't really fault him, he has built a pretty damn good team for us to watch. His best skill (to me) seems to be his creativity, where he pulls random (and often good) deals out of his ass. I'm still of the opinion that the Marlins and Mets trades were not entirely on him, and his hand was forced to build a winner. I also think the Marlins trade is unreasonably viewed as terrible around here, it was a reasonable trade for what they were looking to do. Mets trade obviously felt like a disaster at the time and is even worse now, but nobody he was expecting how bad Dickey ended up being last 2 years

I think the Indians have to get strikeout pitchers because they know their defense is so bad. I'm interested to see how the Jays look at acquiring pitchers this offseason. With the turf the Jays can finally use their home park as a massive advantage. Jays have a great defense as well so Ks are less important.

I think that is pretty much in line with what reasonable expectations were like.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/watch-live-indians-press-conference-with-mark-shapiro/ Love the statement from Dolan "he always told us that there would be a time where the organization would be able to operate without him". That should be every CEO/President's goal.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Interesting that he isn't coming to Toronto until the offseason. Thought Beeston would show him the ropes the next couple of months to get a fast track.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Shapiro looks more Robocop than Green Goblin to me.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 lmao anyone know that Shapiro's brother in law is Eric Mangini the football coach?
Hipfan Verified Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Well Seattle I think is a pretty good example of an organization that has little to no awareness or consideration of advanced metrics...
