Could someone explain why Shapiro suppose to be so good?

I'd like to know this too. The overwhelming majority of Cleveland fans on their message board and Twitter are celebrating Shapiro's exit - if he was really the genius this board is portraying him as, I doubt this would be the case.

Haven't the Indians sucked royally at drafting since they hired Shapiro?

Even if you're not an AA supporter, a team president with Shapiro's track record will set the vision for the franchise and will work with his GM to achieve said vision. As I said in another rant, he would likely not have allowed his GM to make the moves the team made after the 2012 season.

We'll see what happens...

Dombrowski "intended" to keep Cherington.

Cherington was essentially going to be demoted as Dombrowski was granted full control over baseball operations. I don't expect this situation to be similar because Shapiro doesn't appear to running into this thing with the expectation that he's both GM and President. By all accounts Antonetti ultimately had final say in day to day baseball operations in Cleveland, so I'd expect the Shapiro/Anthopolous relationship would be more in line with Anthopolous still holding "GM" power.

There were reports that Rogers wasn't willing to cave and hand over full baseball control to Dombrowski whereas Boston bit the bullet and did exactly that.

That's your first mistake....you won't find any intelligence on twitter or the Indian message boards. That means nothing, message boards, twitter are always full of negativity with zero intelligent thought.

Its just average fans reacting to a team that isn't winning. He didn't accomplish the feat of sustained winning with a bottom 5 payroll, so he's a failure and needs to be replaced. Fans like that don't realize that the grass isn't always greener on the other side, and that what they are expecting is an extremely tall feat.

You saw the same s*** here when this team wasn't winning: "fire everybody", complete with a dead atmosphere of support. Then the tables turn and now the stadium is sold out every night with supposed die hard Blue Jays fans. What exactly do you expect from your average sports fan?

First order of business is probably signing AA to an extension but I have to think something was already worked out with AA before Shapiro was hired.

Lol this guy is pretty vocal:

Looking through his tweets, that guy is basically a Yankee fan in Indians fan clothing.

It would be pretty surprising if something was worked out with AA. They poached a President from another team. The absolute last thing you want to do to kick that off is give his subordinate a new contract extension right before he comes on board.

^ Yeah. It undermines the big new hire to tie his hands like that before he even sits at his desk.

I'm sure AA and GS will be having lots of conversations between now and AA's free agency, though. Whatever happens, I'm not worried. Even if AA comes back, I think he'll do a good job with a superior who has more knowledge and say into the nitty gritty of player evaluation and analytics.

It wouldn’t change the amount of money spent?

Shapiro: It would change the amount of spent to 15 million dollars a year. What does that buy you in free agency? Very little. One and a half wins.

How is that figure determined?

Shapiro: Our analysts can put a value on what it costs in free agency to sign a player and what that means in Wins Above Replacement and what those players end up costing in free agency and that changes every year. They measure all the players signed in free agency and what their history has been and what they offer going forward and they place a value. The challenge in free agency is you’re often paying for that in the first year of a contract, and in the out years of a contract the players WAR usually goes down because he’s usually past his prime. So it becomes a less efficient contract over time. That’s why free agency is never the best way to build. It’s a good way to supplement but not build.

So $8 million for one win?

Shapiro: It’s $9 (million) now. It was $8 (million) two yeas ago. I think at the end of this year they figured out it was nine. And when those wins come in the win curve are important. What does that win mean if it’s the difference between 80 and 81? Very little. But if that win’s the difference between 89 and 90, that could be a meaningful win.

Aren’t there certain players though that could be worth more than that? The right guy and the right fit could mean more than that?

Shapiro: I think there are certain players at certain positions that might be able to leverage impact on other players. Like a catcher for sure. Maybe a leadership component. More than stats alone. We factor those things in. There are certain subjective roles to what certain guys bring to the table beyond just the objective analysis of ‘this is what their added value is.’

But you have to find some way to place a value on what guys bring to the table. We don’t use those conventional stats. We use our own methodology. It does factor subjective and scouting information and makeup and personality and character and all those things in. In the end you’re adding up and trying to determine how many wins that player impacts when you bring him on board. That’s what you’re trying to figure out.

We're going from Godfrey and Beeston to this. That's unbelievable.

Huh? When did the Rays ever have Godfrey and Beeston?

I am absolutely sickened by the news of Mark Shapiro coming to Toronto. The guy was an inept GM who for some inexplicable reason was promoted to President in Cleveland. He lived off the Bartolo Colon trade for years. I have absolutely no idea why the Jays would target him as the successor to Beeston. I fear a statement move like firing AA will happen sometime in the off season. This is a sad day for Blue Jays fans who are so excited about the legitimate WS contender that we now have. Shapiro can only screw this up.

Pretty sure they would've said 'Hey Shapiro. We've been working on a deal to extend AA for a bit now. Any concerns if we wrap that up or do you have other thoughts.' He very well may have given it the thumbs up from his end.

I don't see it. I can't imagine he'd be too concerned about AA walking, and giving the thumbs up before developing a working relationship would be pretty unconventional. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see him extend AA in a couple of months, but I really doubt that any kind of deal is done now.
