BTS Community Moderator Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 What kind of drafting and development did Shapiro teams have? They've developed pretty much their entire team. Kluber, Carrasco, and Bauer were acquired as minor leaguers and fixed in Cleveland. Salazar, Allen, Kipnis, Lindor, Chisenhall, and Perez were drafted/signed as international free agents, and Brantley and Santana were acquired as a prospect. They're a very good org.

Ruined by bad free agent signings (Bourn, Swisher). If they spent their money better, they'd be a great team in the AL Central. They also could use a few more bats in the system.. Also, the Indians are up for sale as well, trying to get a better owner who will put more money in the team.

ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 I wonder how you go from Kenny Williams to Mark Shapiro. Blind luck or did Rogers finally realize how much money they'd make with an efficiently-run baseball ops? I still think AA could fit in as part of the puzzle here. I mean, he has rebuilt the farm system twice so I could see Shapiro being fond of that aspect. I'm sure he'll look negatively at the desperate trades he made after the 2012 season, but it wouldn't surprise me if internally, it was revealed to Shapiro that the GM was pushed to improve the team at any cost instead of going into 2013 with a team expected to lose 90 games. This is not to say that I don't hold AA accountable for the trades, I just think that a president like Shapiro wouldn't allow such moves unless he was also under a lot of pressure from his bosses to field a team that could draw decent ratings and attendance. Now, if Beeston is involved in the hiring process, I think he'd take care of AA. On the other hand, I don't know squat.
Statman Verified Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 From Dan Duquette to Mark Shapiro is like moving from a Honda to an Acura. Thank God for the Orioles incompetence.

BTS Community Moderator Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Heyman just tweeted Jays will announce Shapiro as president soon. f*** yes. The first competent present in... 15 years? I don't even know who had the job before Godfrey.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Does it make a difference if AA is still the gm?

Masterbather Verified Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 I'm not sure how much a president actually matters. Much like managers, I suspect it's much less than people think, but we'll see I guess. Not happy or bothered by it. At least it's somebody with experience.

Statman Verified Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Shapiro > Dombrowski > Duquette Great job! Everything is going amazing with this organization.

I think it's the most important position in the organization, next to ownership. The President sets the direction for the entire franchise. They put the management team in place based on the characteristics that they feel are important in a baseball ops front office. I think we'll see a tight ship under Shapiro.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Shapiro >>>> Beeston. I'd much rather have Shapiro communicating with Rogers than Beeston. I don't know how I feel about AA coming back, but I guess it's hard to let him go after the season the Jays are having.
ValiantJaysFan Verified Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 I guess all those years of sucking and bottom feeding and resisting the urge to hang ourself when watching Jays games was actually us building unbelievably good karma.
Dr Negative Verified Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 I suspect the Mariners will be in for AA. Isn't his contract up anyway?

ValiantJaysFan Verified Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 I suspect the Mariners will be in for AA. Isn't his contract up anyway? Not until the playoffs end. Plenty of time to resign him and if the Jays want him he will stay. He's finally seeing his hard work pay off, it would be stupid to just walk away now.

BTS Community Moderator Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Could someone explain why Shapiro suppose to be so good? He's a baseball guy with a history of overseeing very strong development systems and embracing analytics. He was behind a couple of very good Cleveland teams that just didn't have the payroll/fortune to make a serious run. You can count on one hand the number of truly egregious decisions his teams made over the last 5-10 years.
Statman Verified Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 This is honestly the best decision the Blue Jays have made in years. Fantastic. Nah. AA's decision to acquire Josh Donaldson with 4 years of control for Brett Lawrie, Kendall Graveman, Sean Nolin and Franklin Baretto is impossible to top.

nmrch Verified Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Dombrowski "intended" to keep Cherington. Well to be fair the Red Sox are coming off of 2 disappointing seasons in a row. I wouldn't be surprised if Shapiro keeps AA around. And AA probably wants to be around, he's unlikely to be looking at a promotion to President and the GM openings around the league aren't that enticing. I'll be okay with whatever Shapiro wants to do, keep AA or if he wants to go out and hire a young AGM somewhere
