ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 Does anyone know if Beeston is involved in picking his successor? I think I remember reading somewhere that he would be involved in the process after Ed Rogers made a mess of it all last off season?
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 Also, if AA had a terrible farm system, they would never have been able to make the trades they've made since after the 2012 season.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 For the record, I'm all for hiring Shapiro or someone like him. I doubt the team would've veered from its plan after the 2012 season. In fact, Shapiro may have fired AA on the spot if he came into his office with the Marlins trade proposal. Unless, of course, the team prez was goading the GM to improve the team at any cost. We'll see what happens.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 This is awesome. Shapiro is really smart. Probably time to root for the Jays again. If you can't root for the Jays with the type of season they are having then you probably shouldn't ever root for the team.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 so this guy says its just about done as well. Sounds like its going to happen. Going to be interested to see how much control over baseball ops he will have.
Statman Verified Member Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 A team filled with Donaldson, Tulo, Bautista, Encarnacion, Rusell Martin, David Price and 1st place in the Al East doesn't make you want to root for the Jays but the thought of Mark Shapiro does? LOL!

LOL! Everyone enjoys baseball for different reasons. Building of a team and the way they go about it is one of the most interesting things in baseball. I watched Donaldson, Tulo and Martin all last year too (well more so the year before that). Seeing what someone with an analytic point of view can do with this Jays team is what guys like BTS and I have been wanting to see (also someone with a long term point of view). I hated the Beest, but my hatred for AA grew, I won't go back until he is gone (even though I admit he did well this year) but BTS has openly said that if the Jays started to do things differently he'd cheer for this team. Shapiro would be that step.
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 This is such a huge hire. The team has spent 15 years under Godfrey and Beeston, and will now not only have a baseball guy in charge, but a very open-minded and forward thinking one. With him directing the ship, and a top-10 payroll at his disposal, the next 10-15 years could be an awesome stretch for the org. This is probably the most important position in the franchise, and Rogers hit it out of the park. This could, top-to-bottom, become an elite organization.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 Can't cheer for a team that brought up Roberto Osuna instead of Matt West out of Spring Training. This is probably why, look at the preseason projections for Osuna: 7.8 k/9, 4.8 bb/9, 4.59 FIP, 4.6 ERA. This shows that sometimes you need to believe in what the team sees in spring training vs just blindly believing that Steamer projections are the bible.
Ehjays Verified Member Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 One 90 win season(knock on wood!) in 5 years and a bottom 10 farm system. For every Donaldson trade there's a Syndergaard trade and for every Travis trade there's a Gomes trade. A GM isn't just responsible for the sucess of the big league club in a given year. If we were to rank how every organization did in the last 5 years, not just in wins and playoff success but also accumulation of assets and getting value for the buck, do you think the Jays would be in the top 15 ? I somehow doubt it. Just because AA's successes have been backloaded doesn't mean he deserves an extention. Shapiro should be given complete freedom to hire who ever he wants. AA hasn't done enough to be given immunity under new management. It was Shapiro that traded for Gomes.

ZiPs projections (and Depth Charts because it includes ZiPs) for new players is absolute s***. Just use Steamer. 10.40 K/9 3.14 ERA

Neil Huntington with the Pirates seemed like he wasn't a good GM early on but now he is among the best in the game. I don't think you should let a GM stand in the way of cheering for a team. When you watch the games you are watching a game of baseball. The Jays have some of the most talented and likeable players in MLB even if I didn't believe in the GM I'm still going to cheer for a team with all of these players because honestly its just a really fun team to watch.

BTS Community Moderator Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 BTS on one of his classic wet blanketing sprees. I just posted about how adding Shapiro is a homerun move that could usher in a 10-15 year period of sustained success. It doesn't really get less wet blanket than that.

Blair thinks it's a "puzzling concept" Probably just the timing of it. Also Cleveland hasn't really had much success lately. Be interesting to see what Shapiro does with the RC and the current ticketing structure.

I think people in general try to figure out too soon whether a GM is good or bad. There are those who are/ always have been superb and those who are terrible, but IMO AA fits between those two ranges. I think he's matured into a smarter GM than he was circa 2012 and has always had the ability to build a farm. I sincerely hope Shapiro extends AA for his ability to do that and make trades that benefit the team.
Trouba95 Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 Hope him and Aa can form a strong partnership.

Out of all those guys the only one that can be seen as not likable is Bautista. Hired guns? Tulo, Donaldson (perhaps the best player in MLB) and Russell Martin are under team control for like 3/4+ years. Gotta be trolling here.
