wiredin Verified Member Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 I've always been a fan of dickey. But I big fan of the knuckleball. I'm strange like that.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 Is his name really Harry? Thats unfortunate if true I think his mother's name is Swallow.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 Overall he has been very good over last 15 starts. Have we now established "the Dickey effect" is a thing? I don't think you were on the board when this was published back in 2013 so here you go.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2015 Author Posted September 9, 2015 ...RA stepping up to keep us close. Another big start! We so needed that after losing yesterday.
Mac Outlaw Verified Member Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 I'm tired of reading about the "Dickey effect", especially as it pertains to the playoffs. David Price is starting Game 1. Deal with it. If Dickey makes the playoff rotation it will be because he is one of the best 3 or 4 starters, not because of some "effect" that may reduce the ERA of the starting pitcher who follows him by 0.46. In one game, in real life, in real time, that rounds down to 0 runs saved. Zero. Talk to me about something that freaking matters.

The reason why Cito didn't start some of his players when playing against a knuckler.

If there is a dickey effect, it would be in game when the bullpen comes in.
baubau Verified Member Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 Well if Cito did it... Cito has won 2 back to back MLB championships. How many have you won Hurly?! #back2back
TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 Cito has won 2 back to back MLB championships. How many have you won Hurly?! #back2back Back to back Premier League championships. Would have had a third if it weren't for that pesky Greenwood. For the record my books have the Jays opponents scoring 3.34 runs this year when playing the Jays in a second straight after a Dickey start..
Mac Outlaw Verified Member Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 Cito did do it, of course, in 91. It was a rousing success, as I recall.

Mac Outlaw Verified Member Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 And how many Knuckleballer's did the Jays face in 1991? Don't know. I'm talking about Candiotti over Guzman
TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 Don't know. I'm talking about Candiotti over Guzman I knew what you were talking about (Key was the correct choice for game one though IMO), but the original discussion on Cito was how he would sit certain hitters against knuckleballers or the day after knuckleballers to keep their timing. To the best of my knowledge Candiotti was only knuckleball pitcher in the league in 91

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Author Posted October 13, 2015 Didn't like the decision to go with RA over Price for a bunch of reasons. Regardless we got the W. But RA delivered again, and was surprised he got the yank when he did but Choo had 2 hits off of him so a short leash. Nice job RA in your first ever playoff game.

I hear about Dickey starting and I go "oh s***". And then he does this. Same thing with Estrada yesterday. Truly the Dangerfield of my baseball world at least... If we come back to win this thing, the biggest edge we may have is that our #3 and #4 are so much better than their's

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted May 14, 2016 Author Posted May 14, 2016 http://i.imgur.com/FhlRX4L.gif Bump. RA doesn't get much love and drives most of us nuts in every start. But 3 earned runs in his last 21 IP and pitching better. We are going to need him (and other) when they send Sanchez back to the pen. Lets hope he keeps it rolling.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 14, 2016 Posted May 14, 2016 (edited) The Dickey Rocks! I've always been a supporter, I understand the frustration when he gets lit up, but the guy is so valuable. Edited May 14, 2016 by Spanky99

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted May 14, 2016 Posted May 14, 2016 Thing is, his value now is not what the jays needed it to be. They wanted (foolishly) to gave an ace calibre guy leading the rotation at a below market price. What they got was a mid to backend innings eater at maybe market value at best when you consider the Dickey effect, which is somewhat offset having to carry Thole.

He's been better than that, but the Thole factor is quite real. Plus, a lot of folks thought we were getting a cy calibre guy at 12 million per, he has still brought way more value then his contract, problem is we through a s*** tonne of value out the window on spects, 1 of which it's disgustingly lopsided, it still isn't R.A.'s fault. He's been excellent, in that vacuum.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2016 Posted May 15, 2016 Let him out of the Vacuum and get the man some Spanks! Lol
King Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2016 Posted October 20, 2016 I realize its heresy in these here parts to praise the guy given the ace price we paid to get him vis a vis how he has performed. We will forever think of RA negatively when Noah blows away another hitter. When you look at his numbers aside from chewing up IP they aren't impressive. BUT his last 10-12 starts have been solid (one when he was dealing with loss of his Father) and when we needed a big start on enemy turf last night he gave it. Like most, watching him pitch usually pisses me off, but he has pitched well enough to think you almost have to pick up that 2016 option just to get the innings out of him. Keep it rollin' RA. Thanks. Goodbye RA Dickey. The Dickey era is all over. What a tenure! http://images.bigcartel.com/product_images/166392271/Dickey_on_Dickey.jpg?auto=format&fit=max&h=1000&w=1000
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2016 Author Posted October 21, 2016 (edited) Took a couple days after the sting of Gm 5 to leave for me, but I started this thread and wanted to end it. You weren't what we what we paid for. You cost us Thor and only gave us 6 WAR. But you chewed up many decent starts and genuinely seemed like you had a lot of smarts. You brought us Thole and the worst playoff hammering in our history. Who knew Cliff Pennington had such a decent fastball? A seemingly very nice guy, who forever could not shake the cost of bringing him here. There were moments that transcended our general hatred of the trick pitch that made you famous; prolonged your career and got you a NL Cy Young award. Your acquisition permanently scarred AA's reputation with many, and offset some of the brilliance of moves that he made like JD deal. Sincerely, wish him well in his future path but the time here, even at a much reduced cost, has come to end I hope. Thanks for the memories and a class approach regardless of the adversity that you faced on the bump and with the fan base. Edited October 21, 2016 by BigCecil
