ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 Is my memory deserting me or has AA not chosen to keep guys in the past who were out of options instead of taking the risk of losing them for nothing? I just think this is Gibby's baby. Not that AA should be applauded for obliging or anything...
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 Why is Colabello safe on this team but Valencia expendable? AA always doing something to make us question "is this the same guy who traded for Donaldson?"
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 Gibby should be fired after this season
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 It's possible they think they can trade him so they made him available by placing him on waivers. The only thing that makes sense. Same goes for Colabello. Likely cash.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 right but defensively neither should ever step foot on the outfield Right. However, since the choice was between Valencia and Colabello, you choose Valencia because he kills lhp, can play 1b, 3b, and 2b in an emergency, and is less s***** than Colabello in LF. Plus, AA has historically chosen to keep the guy w/o options when choosing between 2 players.
JamesFord92 Verified Member Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 I've been a long time lurker going back to the MLB.com message board, but this move finally has me pissed off enough to register and comment. I can't for the life of me understand why the team would give up an asset for absolutely nothing. Either it's a salary dump, which would be ridiculous considering Valencia's making under a mil the rest of the season. Or Gibbons somehow didn't seen any value in Valencia (probably the most likely, I don't have much faith in Gibby). Or it was AA's call, which means he has no clue when it comes to asset management. None of the three possible scenarios give me any faith in this org. I like Colabello just fine for what he is, and he was fun story during a pretty depressing part of the season, but in no universe is he more valuable to this team than Danny V. Especially since he could've came back up in September at the latest. Or you know AA could've finally realized the pointlessness of an 8 man bullpen and sent down Loup/Schultz temporarily. I know Valencia probably won't make the difference between making the playoffs or not, but what a horrible move. Sucks to be hit with this during such an exciting time for the Blue Jays.

AA said he deferred the decision to Gibbons, which is stupid, because I doubt Gibbons understands player options and all that junk. Should never have reached that point to allow him to make a decision.
Maahfaace Verified Member Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 s*** manager confirmed Who is Arden? If AA is leaving roster decisions up to his manager I just lost a ton of respect for him. Doubtful this is true Edit. Meant to quote herpderp oops!

I think what AA is doing wrong is that he doesn't understand that the F/O should set the roster, not the other way around. Jerry Dipoto would agree.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 Why why does AA trust Gibby so much
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 Gibby should be fired after this season I can only hope

Sparky12 Verified Member Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 Not sure how the team could be this stupid
0ctobyte Verified Member Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 I doubt they will bring up Pompey to sit on the bench. In September yes but not now. They might bring Pompey up now so he can be available on the playoff roster. Assuming AA believes the Jays will make the playoffs.

F/O put some effort during off season to improve D and just acquired Tulo in some part because of Reyes's defensive shortcomings yet Colabello has gotten way too much PT. Remember, AA went out on a limb to re-hire Gibbons, I don't think he can start squabbling with the man he retreaded out of double-A.
jayswin11 Verified Member Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 I still think this is a stupid move but now that I've calmed down a bit I'm willing to give the team the benefit of the doubt. AA has made some very good moves, perhaps more to come like an actual 4th of than can play the OF, something that will make this all make sense

dineke Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 Can they bring him back if they can't work out a trade?
Caper Verified Member Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 I really don't like the move. But considering how much he would have played, Not a big loss.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 I really don't like the move. But considering how much he would have played, Not a big loss. He plays the outfield better the Cola and he can play third or second in a pinch. Cola has No value on this team. Should have been dfa'd
Swervin81 Verified Member Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 There's absolutely no excuse for keeping Cola over Valencia. Like, none whatsoever. This is just an asinine, godawful decision on so many levels
Travis_Snider Verified Member Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 so is he gone for good? how da f*** do waivers work
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 f*** fans are stupid. They are pissed because they think it's Valencia over Loup.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 so is he gone for good? how da f*** do waivers work I think they can pull a Steve Pearce Baltimore move if there is an injury. If not if he's claimed he's gone.

Should never have reached that point to allow him to make a decision. Forget about options and contractual stuff, I can't fathom how Gibbons doesn't realize that Colabello is only marginally valuable. Wasn't he batting him fourth the other night? I would love to be able to ask him what he loves about him so much.
pickoff22 Verified Member Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 Jesus. A 10 page thread on this move after most people bitch when Valencia was put in the lineup. I don't love this move either, but not every move is as simple as looking at the fangraphs page for two players and picking the one with the higher number in the far right column. It's not like this undoes all the deadline moves that were made, it's not going to break our season. Keep it in perspective people. Nice to see Kawasaki back, hopefully David Price falls in love with him and resigns with us at a steep discount so he can be around his energy for the next 7 years

AA said he'd "consider" going down to 7. Sounds like he doesn't know too much about how to best construct a roster.

Do it for Price
TheHurl Site Manager Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 So your saying if something just mysteriously happend to Colabello we would no longer have a problem. Hmmm we have to have atleast one crazy fan. I think they have 48 hours
