Said this last night, trying to ensure some confidence, that failed.

What alot of posters here fail to understand is that Gibbons is managing PEOPLE, not just numbers. He knows them better than us, and he's managing for the long haul. Gotta keep in mind people's mental issues and attitude problems. Sometimes players have "off" days, or even "off" weeks.

Totally agree and that's fair. But c'mon. In that situation last night we cant afford to play shrink with Sanchez when we have better options.

At least he was cognisent that he was taking a chance by putting in Sanchez but at some point, he has to stop "giving people chances" and just manage strategically. I know relievers prefer to have defined roles but he's taking it way too far.

This. I hear a lot of people saying Cecil should be the 8th inning guy. Why not use the right guy in the right spot. Between Lowe Cecil and Hawk you can figure out a couple innings. If there are 2 lefties up in the 7th i want Cecil pitching. I think you manage the game to who is due up and not whose designated to the role. Ideally i want to see closers to be a thing of the past. A lot of times saves need to happen in the 7th or 8th. However this will never happen for some reason. Especially if Maddon is still using a defined closer.

That's fine but at this point there really isn't a long haul anymore. It's September. I would like to think (hope) that if the game were closer last night, he would have went to Cecil right away because that was obviously the better matchup in terms of strikeout ability, batter-handedness and overall performance of the respective pitchers.

Agree

Every game against the Yankees needs to be treated like a playoff game

Win at all costs

Get Sanchez innings later if/when we have a comfortable lead in the standings

Gibby is bad, his reasoning for not putting in the best option against the lefty hitters was moronic. You don't take chances like that in what is basically a playoff series.

Gibby is a -6 WAR manager

At what amount of lead last night you would not have gone directly to Cecil in the 8th? 5 runs, 6 runs? Certainly there must be a threshold where you have to consider the other two games of the series as well.

If those same guys come up for the Yankees late in a tie or close game tonight, it's likely we can't use Cecil.

I don't think Sanchez's appearance last night was as much about him being the de facto 8th inning guy as much as it was a calculated risk to avoid having to use Lowe/Cecil unless necessary.

this is why we need one more lefty that can throw strikes. I assume Cecil is unavailable tonight which is not terrible because Lowe should be which is solid against everyone.

Well if Sanchez ISN'T the 8th inning guy than why not someone whose been pitching better like Hawkins?

This is my thoughts on what his reasoning using Sanchez might have been last night as well. More about wanting to save Lowe/Cecil and less about his confidence in Sanchez (although I'm sure there was little bit of that hopefulness of Sanchez having a good outing and getting his confidence back as well).

What limits our bullpen the most right now IMO is the lack of that second dependable lefty. It really makes us inflexible in how we use Cecil as he is our only real reliable left hander at the moment. His confidence in Loup is completely shot, and rightfully so... I still predict that Loup will gradually be worked into getting more opportunities vs. Lefties at lower leverage situations to get him ready for the playoffs... unless Loup just happens to be so bad that it's not logical to anybody that he should be out there pitching at all, I guarantee that he's going to be in the playoff roster as that second lefty. It's too much of a risk for any manager to go into a playoff series with only one lefty out of the pen.

I don't disagree with that at all. My viewpoint is less about Sanchez and more about taking a calculated risk with a four run lead to preserve Cecil if possible.

I don't think anybody should be the "8th inning guy".

Said he wanted to give Sanchez a chance, knowing that he would give him a quick hook and that Cecil would be able to pick up some strikeouts. Then talked about how Cecil is one of the "better relievers in baseball" and that all the good relievers rack up strikeouts.

lmao this isn't may, doesn't he realize they're in a f***ing pennant race?

They're probably treading very, very carefully with Hawkins right now... he not only had that injury recently, but seems like he's also running out of gas from that article I read on him the other day.

Let's not forget that Hawkins was actually warming up in the 7th. I think there is a good possibility that the bullpen coaches didn't like what they saw from him there and decided against putting him in/or Hawk decided himself that he's probably better off not going out there.

a calculated risk

Poorly calculated in my opinion but I don't want to keep piling on Gibbons over this. Whoever Gibbons puts in the 8th inning role now that Sanchez has failed will be an improvement. It's an ALMOST dummy proof bullpen at this point.

Well if there are issues with Hawkins than a further re-shuffling of the roles is in order. Give Lowe the 8th and Hendriks the 7th with Cecil as the wild card.

Or he could have used Cecil in the 8th to begin with and not put Sanchez in a position to fail (facing a bunch of lefties, 3rd game in 4 days) if he cared so much about people.

He needs to play the best players. It's that simple. He's been going on hunches all season. Stop. Play your best guys and good things will happen. Sanchez is his 6th best reliever depending on how you feel about Hawkins. Stop with the "8th inning has to be Sanchez" BS and manage like you want to win games.

Like matt hack over Colabello who is a great Lefty masher. I don't care if Hack walked, he had a couple of pitches that would have been hit hard by Cola

I don't know if need another lefty necessarily, we just need guys that can get outs.

Lowe, Hawkins, Hendricks should be all good to go I would think. Would like to not have to use Osuna again if possible.

who else found it interesting that Matt Hague pinch hit in key situation last night??

Colabello and Navarro left on the bench

I did. A single probably scores Goins and it's a 5-run game that might change the whole complexion of the game.

Gibby gonna Gibb.

A Lowe-Hendriks-Cecil-Osuna setup is my ideal.

I think he provides no defensive value so that early in the game he went with Hague. He was saving Cola in case they brought a lefty in to face Smoak later in the game.

Yeah, that seems like the obvious way to go at this point. Expand out to maybe Hawkins if he's healthy, but I would venture too much outside of those 5 guys unless absolutely necessary.

Gibbons managed very well tonight. Used the right guys in the right situations. And the Jays lose.

Last night, Gibby made a few mistakes and the jays won.

Managers have NOTHING to do with a team's W-L record.
