who's on your list of great managers in baseball?

(besides Bochy, Maddon, Hurdle who many would be quick to name)

Gibby made a defensive substitution trailing by a run

are you drunk, bro?

Smoak came in with the Jays leading going into the 7th.

are you still contemplating your list of great managers currently in baseball?

Yeah my bad on the Smoak substitution, but still what the hell is he doing bringing in a defensive sub in the 7th with a 1 run lead?

I'd take any manager in the leageue over Gibby, I'd even let somebody with no experience try their hand at managing the Jays. For 3 big reasons, he has hit Travis in the 9 hole the majority of the season, using Colabello in the outfield for as many games as he did and now not giving Colabello a fair shot at first.

duno if it was brought up today, but Revere batting lead off again today.. he came up in the 9th. With Tulo batting 1st it's Tulo-donaldson in that situation. Do you think gibby goes back to Tulo leading off? He said after the game Sunday that he just wanted to get Tulo's bat going

Colabelo was the last out in the 6th inning... Made perfect sense. And I would rather have Smoak in that situation with the bases loaded in the 8th than Colabelo. Colabelo has had several big situations lately and let us down. In the 6th inning even.

I don't see Gibby going back to that just yet.

with Edwin being red hot, ya don't want him being pitched around too easily.

(and Tulo still scares other teams as evidenced by his intentional walk tonight.)

That's all? Lol. This pace is scorchin. Can't happen. Hopefully some others in the line up can pick up slack when he cools.

can't? He had 3 months last year, why not this year? lol

When else would a defensive sub be more valuable than with a one run lead? I'm trying really hard but I'm failing to see the logic.

On one hand I do feel that we put bit too much pressure initially on Tulo coming in by asking him to do all these things that he's never done before (leading off, DHing), all the while he deals with his first major trade of his career AND adjusting to all these pitchers in a new league that he hadn't seen much of before... I think it all likely played a part in his initial inconsistencies at the plate in his first month as a Blue Jay... Thus I think giving him a breather in batting him 5th for the time being is a good idea. It also gives EE, who is red hot right now, a better protection than someone more inconsistent currently like Smoak/Martin...

On the other hand though I do think Revere is better suited in this particular lineup placed at the 7th spot, as it maximizes his SB potential giving our 8/9 hitters a better chance of driving him in with a simple single instead of relying on the extra base hits all the time... Whenever he's batted 9th or 1st and got on base, it looked as if he's really uneasy with the idea of stealing a base, understandably so with 4 straight great hitters with extra base hit potential coming up after him. I feel that Revere's SB talents, being one of the better ones in the league, should not go wasted and think that he should be placed in the lineup where that talent can be most comfortably and efficiently utilized. But if we go this route, Tulo sort of becomes your leadoff hitter by default there as there isn't really anyone else suited for the role right now. I guess maybe Martin, or perhaps Travis if/when he comes back can also be considered at leadoff, but then we also gotta wonder if we really want to further tinker and experiment with the lineup so often this late in the season....

If Gibby's line of thought is same as mine here then I can see how he's been kind of unsure and uneasy about this whole situation...

If Price, Bautista, and Donaldson hadn't given away the last three runs, the defensive replacement would have come in handy and the unlikelihood of Smoak needing a 2-out hit to keep the game alive would have been far more unlikely.

A one-run lead with opposing aces on the mound in the final third of the game is a near text book situation for a defensive sub.

you must know a lot about evaluating managers so what makes those names great managers?

If any of those guys were our manager, I'd tear my eyes out.

Gibby finally employs a proper defensive sub and people are on his nuts? It's not his fault Donaldson and Goins decided that no one could be left on third base that game.

Gibby really hasn't annoyed me THAT much this year

Id still rather than like 20 MLB managers

hes no maddon but hes alright

bought into the Joe Maddon hype much? lol

well who doesn't love a personable guy who's quick with a quip?

must be a great manager for all those themed road trips ... (and pajamas a couple of nights ago... ahh how cute!)

how about when he brought that old Native American medicine man into the Trop last season to help turn around his team's fortunes? that was great!

and what about when he set his batting order 867-5309 for a game in Detroit? that was great too!! (too bad TB lost and only scored one run)

TB the last couple of years have had injuries, but it's odd that rook manager (with a rebuilding team) is getting better results than Genius Joe did last year with what was predicted to be a playoff team?

Joe is smart enough to know that when the players are good, the team does good. (And when the players are bad, the team does bad.) That's why he hightailed it out of TB as fast as possible when the opportunity arose to take over a team with the best young talent in the game.

If you don't recognize Joe Maddon as one of the better managers in the game, then I don't know how you could differentiate good from bad.

People vastly underestimate the impact a manager has when it comes to clubhouse morale. Strategy is one thing (and important) but having a manager who gets the player's buyin has such an impact over the course of a season. Cito is criticized on lots of strategic fronts, but the players bought in and most loved him. Maddon is the same way (though with a strong strategic mindset as well)

I think Gibbons should've taken Price out after the end of the 6th.

Price had thrown 80 pitches after 6. His velocity was strong and he was piling up the Ks. There is absolutely no way he should have been taken out at that stage.
