Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 Pennington better than Goins defensively? I'm a realist also, and you don't replace excellence. What is Goins excellent at?
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 Pennington better than Goins defensively? I'm a realist also, and you don't replace excellence. Numbers suggest that Pennington has been better than Goins over the past few years, but that Goins is better this year. That may be a playing time issue, and defensive stats are notoriously iffy, but the stats suggest they're both good. Pennington, however, has a career .315 OBP, and Goins has a career .258 OPB.. They both strike out at roughly the same pace (Goins has cut his K% down from his career numbers, Pennington is about at his career norms), but Pennington walks a lot more (both are above their career averages this year, but Goins is up to 7.7% from 4.7(!)%, and Pennington is at 10.2%, up from 8.5%) Couple it with Pennington's ability to switch hit, and he's PROBABLY a more valuable player, though neither are guys you build teams around.

This sounds like a fair and informative assessment. Not many teams have star players at all positions, so I think that the Blue Jays have enough impact players at other positions to still be collectively a playoff team.

In September we'll (hopefully) have Travis back at 2nd, and both Pennington and Goins on the bench, that's pretty damn slick all around.
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 What is Goins excellent at? You don't think Goins is excellent at 2nd. ?
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 Shi Davidi @ShiDavidi 3m3 minutes ago Cliff Pennington expected to be available for #BlueJays today, wearing No. 9. No roster move yet.

Sorrow Verified Member Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 I'm fine with the Pennington over Kawasaki move but having no 4th OF is making me one angry Jays fan. Pillar looks like he needs a day off.

Cheers for the information DP,I had no knowledge of his offence.all I know is what Goins is giving us defensively, and it's excellent at the moment. His OBP % hasn't been too bad,and I he's probably been on base more than the likes of TULO over the last 10 games.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 Ffs are you for real? Yeah I am, he's not excellent at anything

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 This Polar Bear has been in hibernation Shockingly, he's not that off. It's 15 times on base each in the last 10 games. 2 of those are HBP for Tulo. Tulo leads 2 XBH to 1 (all 3 homers). So, in a sample size of 10 games, Goins has been about equal to Tulo.

He's trying to paint a negative picture of Tulo to make Goins look better.

Oh, the sample size is ridiculous and should be dismissed out of hand, but I thought "hey, the numbers are available, why not see if this is baseless 'it seems to me' confirmation bias, or if he was correct." If I were politifact, I would rate his statement "mostly true".

I like Goins' defense and lately he has been hitting better but I wouldn't think of putting him in the same class as Tulowitzki. I think if Goins can stick in the MLB as a good utility player, playing in about 100 games per year, then he will have maximized his talent and succeeded in the MLB.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 He's projected for a 112 wRC+ while contributing no defense from a corner outfield spot getting paid $40 million for the next few years. He's Melky Cabrera, lol. He's had 2 good seasons mixed with some average ones, has posted 500 PA of 85 wRC+ baseball and is projected for 2.5 fWAR/150 on a massive contract which is Jose Reyes to a tee Do you guys still think Carlos Gonzalez is Melky Cabrera and not a good player? Sometimes you people need to lay off the fangraphs bible
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 119 wRC+ with no defense from the COF. Boom, score another one for the FanGraphs.com guys!

I think he's put up something like 1.5ish WAR since the end of June.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 Bump. Reading back though this. Glad we got Price in hindsight. Both would have taken Norris to get. Hamels had control but is aging and gave us less options financially next season.

Hamels had control but is aging and gave us less options financially next season. I think I read that Hammels would have agreed to come to TO, but terms were not agreed to by the teams. Hammels would likely have had a higher cost - Norris, Hoffman and alford, which would have taken tulo off the table. so short term we are much better off, hopefully rogers steps off in the off season and gets a nice FA starter to fill our holes there

Hamels had control but is aging and gave us less options financially next season. Except now to sign Price you are talking about 7yrs/200m+ , and the Blue Jays need starters next year. So less options financially, yes. But also filling an inevitable need that will cost way more to sign next year to fill the #1 or #2 spot.
Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
