Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Stroman and Norris are for the sales of the world
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 I blame John Farrell if he didn't force his way out we wouldn't have had to flip Aviles
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Yeah but trading top prospects for a 33 year old while stuck with that contract would be dumb. I'd rather trade EE to the Cardinals for Carlos Martinez. Maybe add Estrada and get back one of their back end relievers also. The Cardinals can absorb the pitching, since they have a ton, and can use 1.5 years of a team friendly contract in EE. They need power at first base as Reynolds and the other fodder isn't doing it. The Cardinals would love a 30 HR type at 1B. Would you do it? What a young controllable staff we could have for the next 4-5 years while Martinez also gives us the immediate help for this year. We won't miss EE. Reyes (can also DH sometimes now) Travis JD Bautista Smoak Martin DH spot (probably Colabello) Pillar Pompey I don't see why the Cards would trade CMart for Edwin.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Carlos Martinez's innings I've read will be capped this season, so he would be an awful target if they're looking for a playoff push.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 It's hard b/c Leake and Cueto are both going to get QO's. Need to beat out the comp pick. IMO Sanchez/Norris/Hoffman + Boyd is better than the two comp picks, so then you'd have to add for Cingrani and Bruce... We wouldn't be getting Cingrani back. He sux. Actually this seems like a fun deal I'll draw this up. $8.175m/WAR, comp pick = $9.0m! Cueto ~ 2 WAR RoS + comp pick - $4.25m salary RoS = $21.1m Leake ~ 1 WAR RoS + comp pick - $4.5m salary RoS = $12.675m Bruce ~ 1 WAR RoS + 2 WAR 2016 + 2 WAR 2017 + comp pick - $30.75m salary = $19.125m (option year assumed) Cincinnati sum = $52.9m Norris = $30.8m (http://www.thepointofpittsburgh.com/how-much-an-mlb-prospect-is-worth-updated-trade-surplus-values/) (pitcher #11-25 or whatever and then adjusted the $/WAR) Boyd = $5m????? Saunders ~ 1 WAR RoS + 1.5 WAR 2016 - $7m?? salary = $13.44m Toronto sum = $49.24m So theoretically, it should only take something like a 2016 controllable reliever or a prospect like DSJ added in. Who knows.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 I don't see why the Cards would trade CMart for Edwin. Because adding a legit power threat to their line up for a year and a half anchored by their pitching would be ideal. If Martinez's innings will be capped let's say by the third week in August, there's a good chance we can get innings out Stroman or Hoffman to close out the year. Our pitching can be built around Stroman, Martinez and Hoffman.

Just can't see them moving one of the best young pitchers in the game for a 32yo w/ 1.5yrs of control left.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Sign me up for that deal. But Stroman ain't going no where! When you consider our place on the win curve (PLEASE JUST LET US WIN FOR ONCE is basically our position), the value we're getting is probably more like $65m or something. Not to say we're ripping off Cincinnati, that's not how it works, they have their own $/WAR figure. So yeah I'd really like to do that deal, tbh.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 They have Jaime Garcia, Wainwright and Lynn that will bring back a slugger if they really want. Just can't see them moving one of the best young pitchers in the game for a 32yo w/ 1.5yrs of control left. Jaime Garcia won't get them anything. Too scary. Wainwright and Lynn probably don't have as much raw value as CarMart either. Really good + really young + really controllable = really valuable.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Trading Stroman would be insane. Even AA at his drunkest wouldn't do that (I hope).

Who knows. Cingrani doesn't suck he's mediocre with quite a bit of upside if he can figure out his control issues. IMO Bruce is the least interesting piece, rather save the assets and ~$12M of budget. The Jays really just need a stopgap until Saunders can get back and Pompey can be that guy.

Bruce is a legitimately good outfielder. Pompey isn't a sure thing. Cingrani isn't even a good reliever. 118 xFIP-.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Posted a few weeks ago stroman would be in play. If the team is all in and aa trying to save his job, it's the most likely move. Wrong move, unless controllable talent coming back. Will more likely be similar to last years shark and hammel trade
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 They have Jaime Garcia, Wainwright and Lynn that will bring back a slugger if they really want. Just can't see them moving one of the best young pitchers in the game for a 32yo w/ 1.5yrs of control left. EE is a legit 30-40 HR first baseman which will cost them very little for 1.5 years. That type of value doesn't grow on trees either. Acquiring EE for a pitcher who isn't pitching this post season anyways is inviting. EE could be the icing on back to back WS titles.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Jaime Garcia won't get them anything. Too scary. Wainwright and Lynn probably don't have as much raw value as CarMart either. Really good + really young + really controllable = really valuable. That's the point though, CMart is extremely valuable and they have a couple older guys that will get them something good. If he's healthy Garcia would get them a useful short term asset. Needs to get healthy before anyone would take him though.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 I like Leake but he's not worth more than twice as much as Boyd. The comp pick is valuable but I guessed on Boyd so who knows gimme a dollar figure That's the point though, CMart is extremely valuable and they have a couple older guys that will get them something good. If he's healthy Garcia would get them a useful short term asset. Needs to get healthy before anyone would take him though. Garcia is not healthy. CMart has the most market value but the least value to them.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Why? Bruce is a legitimately good outfielder. Pompey isn't a sure thing. Cingrani isn't even a good reliever. 118 xFIP-. I've just never been a big Bruce fan and the difference bwtween him and Saunders/Pompey RoS is likely less than 0.5 win. just don't want to give up assets for that when there are cheaper alternatives. I also think Pompey put up more run value than Bruce over the next 3 seasons. Don't really want to block him with a big $ guy they'll feel obligated to play like Bruce.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 EE is a legit 30-40 HR first baseman which will cost them very little for 1.5 years. Carlos Martinez is very little? That's a HUGE cost. It's like giving up Stroman for Edwin and I wouldn't do that deal either. That type of value doesn't grow on trees either. Acquiring EE for a pitcher who isn't pitching this post season anyways is inviting. EE could be the icing on back to back WS titles. Sure but they also could keep CMart and move another guy still have good pitching, still have a good offense and still compete for a WS. No need to move him or Wacha.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Garcia is not healthy. CMart has the most market value but the least value to them. If Carlos Martinez is traded I'll eat a hat. Makes zero sense for any organization to move a pitcher like that for a yr and a half of a non-AS caliber player whose over 30 and performing well below expectations.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Fangraphs article - One way for the Jays to go for it http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/one-way-for-the-blue-jays-to-go-for-it/ TLDR; The Reds are trying to compete in 2016 and want to move rentals. Don't want prospects back, want guys that can contribute. oesn't think a Chapman + Cueto package makes sense for the Reds to deal. Proposes Cueto + Leake + Cingrani for Stroman No.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Have the cards hacked the jays value system? No trade otherwise

EE's power is there and is performing to expectations. Are you referring to his. 239 batting average?

I wouldn't cry if EE was traded for a nice young controllable arm. There are moves that must be made regardless if he has 1.5 years of a team friendly deal left. That's exactly why you trade him now, when he has value. The jays need to trade players and get back younger guys when the time is right. We need pitching in the short term, and the Yanks/Red Sox will be all over the FA pitchers next year. Jays don't have that luxury of having unlimited pockets like the dodgers.

Yeah but who knows, AA pulled off way more unlikely scenarios before. Throwing Estrada in the mix may change things. Estrada can help them in late August and September, not to mention being a good long man in the post season.

I have no problem moving Edwin (or Reyes for that matter), I just don't think the Cards or any team would even consider giving up a premium young arm like him for Edwin. Maybe something like Edwin + Castro for CMart, where the Cards get back a good young arm as well. IMO it still makes way more sense to move a veteran arm.

You also have to consider the protection EE will provide in the line up. 35 HR types are respected and feared, regardless of what their wRC looks like. The Cardinals desperately need power in their line up.

They're making the playoffs as is, just don't see them selling off their future to add a win this season. If AA can make it happen he'll get back to ninja GM status
