reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 I completely understand if someone doesn't trust Strasburg to be healthy enough to be a star. But continuing to trade youth and control for 12 to 15 starts honestly doesn't make nearly as much sense as trading from a strength. A cost controlled ace (even for just a year and a half) is going to be tough to come by. Washington is the only team I can think of that's still in contention that desperately needs the 1B (or just offense in general) and has the depth to trade a cost controlled pitcher without effecting their team too much. It's a horrible PR move for both teams and gets the Jays into bed with Boras but it's close to making sense. I understand your line of thinking but I just don't think it makes a lot of sense for either team since both teams are in win now mode and likely don't want to give up a piece of their core. Blockbuster deals between 2 contenders don't happen very often for that reason, but it's possible. For me it makes more sense to trade a lot for Hamels or come up with a package for Samardzija + Jones with every intention of making a big offer to Shark. Cueto is great and all but if the price is anywhere close to what it would cost for Hamels (I'm assuming talks start with Norris in both cases) we should be hesitant.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 FFS Pompey will be more valuable than Reddick as soon as second half 2016
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 FFS Pompey will be more valuable than Reddick as soon as second half 2016 And you know this how? Josh Reddick is a very good player at the MLB level, Pompey has not proven to be as such.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 And you know this how? Josh Reddick is a very good player at the MLB level, Pompey has not proven to be as such. I don't, it's an opinion. Every other post on here is an opinion. FWIW, at the beginning of the season some here, including knowledgeable posters, pegged Pompey for 3 WAR. Reddick has eclipsed 3 WAR once in his career.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Adam Lind is 30% worse against lefties than Josh Reddick. s*** x 1.3 still equals s***.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 If it take Norris+ or Castro & Pompey for Reddick I would seriously look elsewhere. I'd move those guys, but it better be for an Ace like Hamels. Good god, the man is a left handed platoon bat. Career wRC+ of 84 vs. LHP, OPS of .664. For all intensive purposes, he's Adam Lind with some OF defense. Barf. Really? Nobody?

GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 s*** x 1.3 still equals s***. He's like Adam Lind, who can hit lefties at a useable rate, and play the outfield, so... he's nothing like Adam Lind?

He's got a wRC+ of 34 this year vs. LHP. It was 55 last year. That's tuuurrible. Not useable. I don't see any value in giving up our good assets like Castro, Pompey, Norris, etc. to add this guy. We need pitching.

Use his whole career sample. http://www.breakingblue.ca/2014/01/16/blue-jays-true-talent-offensive-platoon-splits/

I'd love to have his defense and superior WWE knowledge on this team - I'm just not giving up our top assets to get him when he's a platoon guy.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 @BKennedyStar: AA said he was "close" to making two deals in May, but they fell through. One was "90% there" before it fell apart. Nothing as close since.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 AA was close to a deal at '14 deadline for a rental who was "having a down year." Return was Pillar & Nolin. Didn't pull trigger. #BlueJays

reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 Walker the better target..... 4.64 ERA, 3.80 xFIP...... and Jack Z stupid They're not trading Walker...
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 They're not trading Walker... they will for the right deal. i'd rather norris, pompey, and whoever for walker instead of hamels
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 they will for the right deal. i'd rather norris, pompey, and whoever for walker instead of hamels If they're in sell mode, why would they trade their best young pitcher? Not to be mean but that makes absolutely no sense.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 I have him on IL and I'd rather be ignorant of proposals like that
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 If they're in sell mode, why would they trade their best young pitcher? Not to be mean but that makes absolutely no sense. wells for napoli didnt make sense either all i am saying is if trading top prospects for pitching, get a young pitcher already in MLB instead of a guy with 5 or so years left if his arm doesn't go dead like Halladay first
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 Taijuan Walker is a young controllable pitcher and was a top pitching prospect for a very long time, he's also having a pretty decent year, something seemed to click after a rough start and he's been excellent ever since. This is why, like RJF has said, he's not getting traded any time soon. When teams start selling off their main assets they don't go for the 22 year old with a lot of potential and under team control. Ironically, that last sentence also applies to Daniel Norris perfectly.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 I would rather take on the whole contract and give up a lesser package than the other way around. That would be better, but Rogers won't see it that way. If the Jays are intent on doing a big trade this trade deadline, and someone like Norris has to be included in any deal, then I'd rather trade for Hamels than a rental. At least with Hamels we get him for 3+ years. Norris for 6 years might end up being better value from 2016-onwards, but getting three years of an ace for that price is better than 2 months.
