HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 specifically @ Howarth. It's a good read with lots of quotes http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/blue-jays-reyes-responds-to-criticism-by-howarth/
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 Great response from Jose. Howarth's attacks have been bizarre.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 Great response from Jose. Howarth's attacks have been bizarre. This isn't the first time Howarth has shown signs of being off his rocker. He really should be put out to pasture before he further embarasses himself.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 Who is Howarth to criticize Reyes to the degree he did? Reyes obviously isn't the same player he used to be, but is far from this team's biggest problem.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 I'd jump for joy if the Jays could find a taker for Reyes, but he has at least 3 wins on Goins, even with the s*** defense. Stop talking, Jerry.

dineke Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 Jerry Howarth has had to watch every blue jays game for the last 20+ years. Cut him some slack.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 Holy f***, could someone please take Howarth behind the shed already? This guy is a dinosaur among dinosaurs.
Governator Community Moderator Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 Howarth is going to have to pray a little harder to help Reyes on defense.
JohnnyLonghorn Verified Member Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 Lol 20+ years of frustration has caught up to old man Jerry just like lots of people around here. Not everything Jerry said was untrue but alot of his comments were distasteful and extremely unprofessional, particularly the remarks about Reyes smiling too much and treating professional baseball the same as a game of street ball. Given Jerry's platform he has tremendous influence. Reyes has played 25 games this year and he's been the whipping boy all week for the team's struggles. Glad to see him stand up for himself. I wonder if Jerry will say hi to him before tomorrow night's game.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 I don't get it. Jerry said: - a shortstop that's not going to get better - defense is porous - $46M owed for 2016/17 is a tough situation for the Jays - offense has fallen off from where it was - smiles too much Outside of the ridiculous comment about smiling too much - Jerry is just stating the facts - many of which have been reiterated on this board excessively. Don't we want announcers to tell it the way it is instead of trying to massage the truth in favour of the home team (Wilner). I'm not going to lobby for Goins to start over him - but it's all true. He's better off defensively at 2nd/LF, his offense has fallen off the table (wRC+ 142 to 109 to 113 to 102 to 77, BB% 7.3 to 8.8 to 8.1 to 5.8 to 2.8), his contract is a burden and he's likely not going to get any better. I don't think Jerry deserves much criticism here. Jose needs to stop making excuses, work hard and get better.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 Jose needs to stop making excuses, work hard and get better. FFS. No amount of work is going to make time go backwards. It's not Reyes' fault that he's getting older. This is all on AA for taking on this bad contract in the first place. Criticizing Reyes himself is completely futile. All he can do is do the same thing that brought him success in baseball in the first place. The fact that the results just aren't there like they used to be can't be helped.
King Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 You are completely bang on except when you went off on a tangent about him being better defensively at 2B/LF. Strong username to post content ratio
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 You said it girlfriend, you're bang on! No way Jose. Have you ever seen him play LF... didn't think so, so how can you even say this with any shred of conviction? "I know that day we lost the game because of me, I understand that. I’ll try to get better and make the play next time they hit it to me." ^Isn't this exactly what he said and how is that making excuses? Fair point - I was talking about when he says he was just 6 games back from the DL and still not in the swing of things, etc....he certainly made some excuses in there. Also a fair point about his defense in LF/2nd - I'm assuming based on general opinion that LF and 2nd are easier to play.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 Great response from Jose. Howarth's attacks have been bizarre. Nice professionalism by Reyes to take the high road. He was honest and didn't get catty or defensive.
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 I have a feeling that the version presented to the public differs significantly to the version that Reyes originally submitted before the PR people 'fixed it'. It was probaby a little something like this: "Who gives a faaaawk?"
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 If his arm is actually a liability then maybe 2B makes sense, but I don't think it is... the few misthrows he makes during the season he makes up with arm strength. And I'm pretty sure 2B and SS have about the same amount of play chances. In an ideal world, Reyes would be moved to 2B. However, we already have a 2B who is much better than Ryan Goins as an every day player, so can we all just STFU about it?

His body is breaking down - I get that and I do blame AA for this situation, but you say that like no player in history has ever slowed their decline....he's only 31 - I don't think it's completely unfair to expect him to at least sustain some of his skills.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 Reyes handled that very well. Thank god it was directed at him instead of at Bautista or something lol.
