Governator Community Moderator Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 I wonder if we can trade Saunders for Happ
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Colabello is leading Buffalo in OPS, Carrera was also hitting well. Seems like AA is paying attentiong to AAA stats (not so much AA given the Matt West DFA). Blue Jays AAA 2009 Travis Snider .337/.431/.663, 186 wRC+ Randy Ruiz .320/.392/.584, 154 wRC+ David Dellucci .317/.380/.556, 144 wRC+ Brian Dopirak .330 /.366/.509, 129 wRC+
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Collabello is interesting. There are far worse options. He's played good in the minors, never really got a chance in the majors. Too old to be considered a prospect, but it's not like there hasn't been guys like him before that have came up and produced for big league clubs.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 PCL though I think the larger point is should we really care who's been hot at AAA so far? Pompey should have been kept around unleast until the OF defense sorts itself out.

He got a chance last year and was picked apart after his hot start. He's not good
Praxis Verified Member Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 he played for the Twinkies last year. Hit a bunch of bombs first couple weeks and then other teams figures out he cant hit breaking stuff and that was the end of him. So this is the Italian-American version of Juan Francisco?
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 So they sent Diaz back down, so we have no back-up middle IF. what the fk is this team doing?

jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 So they sent Diaz back down, so we have no back-up middle IF. what the fk is this team doing? I believe Danny Valencia is the backup infielder. He has played 2B in his career. And Collabello has experience at 3B. Otherwise, I have no clue about AA's roster management.

Also Collabello fills zero need right now. He's just another defensive pylon.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Yep, count me in as those now wishing we kept Happ. Happ + Pillar > Saunders + Sanchez This roster is a mess.

Laika Community Moderator Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 I assume Donaldson to short, Valencia to third. Valencia can also play second if Travis gets hurt. The more important thing is that this could prevent them from pinch-hitting for Goins in the 7th or 8th. Yeah, this move is (again) hard to wrap your head around. With 1B/DH thoroughly clogged with Bautista's shoulder injury, Colabello's only attractive quality would seem to be as a late inning pinch hitter for a light hitting lefty like Goins or Carrera. I'm guessing we could see him pinch hit for Carrera once or twice, and that's probably it for this Colabello stint.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Yep, count me in as those now wishing we kept Happ. Happ + Pillar > Saunders + Sanchez This roster is a mess. There's two years of control on Saunders though. That's a good return for one year of Happ and let's not forget that Bautista, the only veteran OF coming into the season is a guy who might spend less and less time there over the course of this season and next. Saunders fills a need. Let's not ignore that just because he's off to a slow start and Pillar is off to a hot one. Things are a bit awkward right now but Estrada is pretty comparable to Happ. Hopefully he puts together something decent tonight and we all feel better about the state of the team tomorrow.

Seems like AA just wanted to capitalize on a hot start in AAA which really doesn't seem worth it given the current issues with roster flexibility.

But to be entirely fair, in all likelihood Jonathan Diaz is actually a sub-replacement level player so if Goins ever gets hurt, Donaldson at SS would probably lead to a superior arrangement of position players than just plugging the nominal backup SS Diaz in there.

baubau Verified Member Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 All of this Saunders hate has a some shades of Mekly. 1st Year, injured: OMG, he suckz. Why AA waste money on this Scrub and not get a real pitcher! f*** you AA. 2nd Year, not injured: OMG, he is the perfect 2nd hitter in a lineup. Why did AA let him go. f*** you AA. While the Jays have still said Saunders is "fine", I am going to guess that not having a part of your knee will still take some adjustment time to look good in the outfield and more than 32 PA to get caught up on the hitting.

Only the trolls are hating, the rest realize he's noticeably limping and has shown very little mobility. DL him until he shows adequate recovery

Well s*** if Donaldson is a viable shortstop then why not give him more starts there now while you're a it? A lineup with Valencia at third and Donaldson at short would just demolish left-handed pitching and then Goins comes in for late inning defense (the role he's best suited for anyways).
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 OMG Donaldson at SS plz Found the dude with Donaldson on his fantasy team!

A lineup with Valencia at third and Donaldson at short would just demolish left-handed pitching and then Goins comes in for late inning defense (the role he's best suited for anyways). Different circumstances of viability. I would feel fine with him there in an emergency but by banking on him to start there you're probably bleeding more runs defensively than Valencia is adding with his bat. Could always do the math on it though. The question really is, is Jonathan Diaz worth giving a roster spot to if his only discernible skill is the ability to play the MIF at some degree of fuzzy competence, or would it behoove the team to instead give that roster spot to a pinch hitter? If you're a risk-averse GM I guess you'd just keep the backup SS on the 25 man because that's just what people do. If you cut Diaz and Goins doesn't get hurt until Reyes returns, then you've won the gamble (and hopefully, Colabella has clobbered a pinch hit HR and won a game in the interim).
