Or not even sucked, just did as expected or slightly worse...If he were hitting .250 with 0 HR to this point it would go mostly unnoticed, it being so early and with many other players who were expected to carry the load hitting around .200. But imagine that were the case, how bad would we be?

Not only that, but how about Pillar? He's had at least 2 games that I recall where his glove saved us from losing. His bat has been meh, but it's been very clutch and he's had a few games here or there with key runs.

 

We're extremely lucky that the schedule has the AL East teams facing each other so frequently this early on to only make us 2 games behind 1st.

That would completely deplete the Jays system. On the one side, Papelbon/Hamels give the Jays a realistic chance of competing for a playoff spot. But those are moves that should have been made in the offseason without costing all the high end prospects the Jays have. I don't think it would be a wise gamble at this point considering they might possibly need 2 high end starters and not making the playoffs would set this team back quite a bit.

My biggest fear is that if the team continue to struggle, and the noose around AA's neck tightens, he could end up pissing away half our farm system for Hamels just to save his own ass.

I like Jeff Hoffman as much as the next guy, but the kid has never played a pro game. Past top-10 lists are littered with pitchers far more accomplished than him that never lived up to the hype: Brian Matusz, Neftali Feliz, Jeremy Hellickson, Matt Moore, Shelby Miller, Dylan Bundy and so on and so forth. If a rival GM values Hoffman anywhere close to where some people on this forum do, he's very likely most valuable to the team as a trade chip.

Even if that's true, his value is higher than Hamels anyway.

 

His value to the team might not be. You just have to make a few assumptions:

 

- Hamels is a 3-4 win upgrade this year, which is likely the difference between playoffs and no playoffs

- Hamels at 5/110 is better value than the team feels they can acquire via the FA market next year

- Hamels' salary can be accommodated going forward

- The team's experts have no concerns about his health going forward

 

Absent any context, Hoffman is the more valuable asset, but it's not that difficult to see a situation in which he's moved for Hamels and everyone is happy with it 3-4 years down the road.

I wouldn't trade Hoffman for Hamels straight up, I would rather acquire papelbon for mostly cash. Hoffman could be in the rotation by next year and they can also get an ace in the offseason, since no one else needs to be paid.

We're in a really precarious position right now and I think Hamels & Papelbon could push us over the edge to contend (even for a couple years) but that's a lot of prospects.

 

It would suck giving up Hoffman too but I'd consider it if they took the same package minus one of those prospects (say Urena) and ate a satisfactory amount of the combined 126M.
