Why?

Sanchez will now be needed in the rotation (ugh), and AA can't afford to scratch his own ass with the money he has left to spend from ownership, so that pretty much covers it.

I see Sanchez, Norris and Santana as the big wildcards with Estrada being another J.A. Happ at best. I think we have serviceable options for 4th and 5th spots in the rotation. If we have to go any deeper then it is going to be another 80 win season tops. Considering the age of Dickey/Buehrle and Huchison's Tommy John history, we might need a 6th and 7th option.

Norris should be ahead of Sanchez in the depth chart, and Estrada could still take that 5th starter spot, this injury shouldn't change too much aside from Norris most likely being the one guarantee to make the rotation.

No thank you.

Dickey

Hutch

Buehrle

Norris

Estrada

Depth - Sanchez

This is how AA sees it, concerning his interview with Ken Fidlin on the 24th of February.

Should be Norris and Estrada in the rotation. If either of those two suck or another arm goes down, God help us.

Looks like we all agree they will ignore the arbitration clocks and the development of some fantastic prospects all for the sake of chasing an unrealistic goal of making the playoffs without their best starting pitcher.

AWESOME. Just F'ing awesome.

You're 100% correct. I think we have enough serviceable options at 4/5 too. The issue is we no longer have a top of the rotation pitcher. We just have to cross our fingers that Norris is this year's Stroman and that Hutch and his second half slider/results are for real and he's ready to breakout into a force.

Pretty much.

Id put Sanchez and Norris in the rotation and Estrada in the pen. I would not bring Castro or Osuna up and instead just have Sanchez's spot be taken by one of the many pen guys. I don't think the pen will be that bad. Estrada was very good as a reliever and if Cecil is healthy he should be just fine. Also Delabar has looked good FWIW and some other guys have been pretty good in brief stints as well.

Starting depth is really bad though. Hope Johhan becomes something

Screw this ******** about arbitration clocks and crying about development. Every player is different. If they can perform in the Majors play them.

Castro for a 200 IP starter...when they are ready, they're ready!

Might start the season as the setup man and depending on CecilCecils recovery...closer...lol

Posted

Also don't forget Cecil can throw 200lp out of the bullpen as the teams best late reliever setup man and closer

The rest of the pen we can work around by picking AAAA guys no one else wants

I'm just joking don't ban me. However there is some truth to this. All off season AA twiddled his thumbs and was mainly supported by this board for not bothering with attaining depth

Well this is where we are. Hope you enjoy some blown 5-3 leads cause there will be many many of those

any word on how Santana is coming along and when he might be able to pitch? He might actually get his shot now.

Santana is done as a ballplayer.

Hahahahaha.....

Ugh, Dickey is the worst lol.

well we should have known the good fortune healthwise with the starting rotation in 2014 wouldn't last.....

stroman won't be the only one to go down

can never have enough pitching

Redmond and Estrada in the rotation to start, Sanchez in the 'pen, Norris in Buffalo to keep his clock from starting early, bring him up when one of Redmond/Estrada implodes

In the meantime throw valuable games away

Dickey is the best. He's the only one who really deviates from sports interview cliches.

West, Hynes, Lopez, Guilmet, Delabar. There isn't a bullpen depth issue.

Based on what? So they have some guys who might be decent/unspectacular BP arms. How is that not a depth issue?

Well, I guess it's more of a back-end issue than a depth issue. They have one shut down guy (Cecil) one setup guy (Loup) and then about a dozen that you would project close to replacement level.

You could certainly call it a depth issue if you want. The depth at the back-end of the bullpen is lacking. They could use more shut down arms for sure. The problem is, it's extremely, extremely inefficient to acquire guys that would project as shut down arms.

And the optimist would say that shut down bullpen arms come out of nowhere every year. They rise from the ranks of the "replacements" and cement themselves as really f***ing good. Remember when Andrew Miller was a sad failed prospect? When Dellin Betances was a lost cause that couldn't throw strikes? Who saw Pat Neshek turning into an elite reliever?

But, the pessimist would say that banking on that happening to your team is a terrible idea.

Maybe bullpen arms are so random that the Blue Jays have actually got it right this year by acquiring a bunch of intriguing minor league guys to fill it out. We'll see. In the team's defense, some of them have been really effective in recent memory (Lopez and Delabar).

This kind of thinking is extremely short sighted and ignoring what's best in the long-term to chase a longshot is tomfoolery. The reality is - a lot of the young pitchers they have aren't ready to perform in the Majors sir.

Why wouldn't you want Papelbon if they ate some cash? He's not what he used to be but still a useful reliever.

Ruben Amaro lives in a fantasy world, though. He has no idea what players are worth.

He won't eat money to deal Ryan Howard, he sure as hell won't do it to deal Papelbon.
