Governator Community Moderator Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 What would it take to get Strasburg for the year? Seems like a legit stopgap at ideal price.
ColdPint Verified Member Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 The problem is that to get a big name other teams will be asking for a package starting with Norris/Sanchez/Pompey. You'd be filling a need by further depleting what little depth you have and then when the next SP injury came along you'd be in an even worse position.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Do you honestly believe in jinxes, karma, etc... When it comes to the Jays, there is no such thing as jinxes. Bad things happen to them regardless of what is said. You can say Daniel Norris will throw 200 IP in 2015 or Daniel Norris will get Tommy John Surgery, and regardless, always expect the worst to happen. We're the Blue Jays. This is reality.

As much as this sucks, the team hasn't had more injuries than average over the last 5 years.

You would think we would have slightly more just based on the turf we play on. It's nice to know maybe that's over exaggerated if what you're saying is true.

Stroman this year, Hutchison and Johnson in 2013, Morrow, and obviously McGowan for most of the last 5 years. Am I missing any? It doesn't feel out of the ordinary at all.

Review the injuries history of other teams. Braves, Rangers, Angels, Phillies.....
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Stay calm. Don't make panic trades. The team's long term outlook is looking at least decent with last year's emergence from Stroman, Hutchison, Pompey, Norris and a few others. Stay the course, f windows.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 If Stroman were Canadian, he'd be back in 3 weeks, but...
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 In all seriousness, punched in the gut is what this feels like. Not only because of how this reduces the team's chances, but because he's the type of pitcher you look forward to watching pitch. Hope he comes back as good as new.

I fluked on to this site last week. It's very interesting, I haven't thrown the data into a spreadsheet yet but someone could. Man games lost last year the Jays were 13th. http://www.mangameslost.com/end-of-regular-season-mlb-disabled-list-games-missed-and-tmitt-september-30-2014/

And IIRC almost nobody was hurt in 2010. I wonder where they'd place without McGowan missing like 600 games over that time.

BTS Community Moderator Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 This is dumb if you're not averaging the quality lost over the quantity lost I think if anything Toronto's stars have been pretty fortunate in terms of staying healthy. Stroman and Johnson are the two biggest blows in the last 5 years, and really the only two major long-term injuries to key players. I guess you could maybe throw Morrow's sketchy health record in there too.

I don't find it very interesting.

I guess you could maybe throw Morrow's sketchy health record in there too. You might have to consider the circumstances too. Edwin got hurt at a REALLY bad time last season, considering they were a fringe playoff team. Injuries, even big ones, when the team already sucks don't matter too much.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 As much as this sucks, the team hasn't had more injuries than average over the last 5 years. 2008/9: Burnett leaves as a FA. Marcum, McGowan, and Litsch all need surgery and miss all of 2009 season. That forces the Jays to basically punt 2009 on purpose, and subsequently trade Halladay at the end of the season. 2012: Hutchison, Drabek, and Morrow pretty much get hurt around the same time, forces Hutchison and Drabek to miss all of 2013, and Morrow to never be the same again (for whatever reason). 2013: Projected rotation of Dickey, Johnson, Buehrle, Morrow, Happ, and Romero. Johnson ends up getting hurt, pitching poorly, and missing most of the season. Morrow gets hurt and misses most of the season. Happ gets drilled in the head with a line drive. Romero ceases to be a Major Leaguer. I'm not saying they are better or worse with healthy than others, but they sure as hell don't get the benefit of health that often. Last season and 2010 were really huge missed opportunities.
Ehjays Verified Member Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Okay so we've lost Stroman for the year. That sucks but we have to move forward.. But I wouldn't go trade any top prospects 1st because we do get Stroman back next year and can really see how our organisation unfolds (at 2nd, CF and even SP ie do we want Dickey back next year etc) 2nd because AA's prospect trades havent been the best when he feels pressured.

I don't really see who they could trade that would actually be a significant blow. Norris won't be traded because they need him this year. Same with Pompey. After that I'm cool with anyone else being jettisoned for an impact starter.

Only one I probably wouldn't deal is Hoffman, honestly.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 They won't be trading Norris, Sanchez, or Pompey because they need those guys. They won't trade Hoffman because he's not healthy yet. Really, the only trading chips they have that might attract interest are Osuna and Castro, and they'd probably be selling low on them at this rate (their value could skyrocket by this time next season, especially Osuna's). I guess if they can trade those two and get Hamels back, it would be fine, but I can't see Ruben doing that (he'd ask for those two plus Norris, Sanchez, Pompey, and Hoffman).
