intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 Sadly his terrible defense detracts from any offense he is able to put up. Detracts but doesn't cancel out. Donaldson's alleged throwing issues will detract from his overall value, but no reasonable argument can be made that he isn't worth the trade off. Reyes is not Donaldson in terms of value to the team, but the same thinking applies. It's frustrating to see Reyes come up lame on defense, but let's not throw the baby out with the bath water here by saying he's a net negative to the team.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 Hard for the hitters when it's a completely different style of pitcher in every AB. When is next televised game? Friday vs the Orioles on MLB Network. Saturday vs the Yankees on SN.
flafson Verified Member Posted March 8, 2015 Author Posted March 8, 2015 It's Goins. Do you really need to ask? He hit into a double play. Guy can't even bunt. Was he the only one who hit into DP?
BlueJaysGirl Verified Member Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 Damn Jimenez is looking sexy behind the plate. Nice steady glove, strong arm. He'd be the perfect back up to Martin. And for $4.5M less than Navarro.

If / when Navarro is traded, i hope AA has enough scruples to realize this. I think a lot of this has to due with if Martin can effectively catch Dickey.

Or at least sign some hungry, old, free agent knuckleballer to chuck to him down in Buffalo for a few months.

This might be a stupid question but here goes: If some dusty old knuckleballer can't crack the major league team, would catching his knuckleball in Buffalo even benefit AJ? Wouldn't that just mean he's catching a lame knuckleball? When rookie catchers come up I understand they have enough of a time catching conventional big league pitchers vs the AAA-calibre talent they're used to dealing with.

I have a feeling that we'll never see Jimenez in a Blue Jays uniform for an extended period of time so I wouldn't really worry about it. I think experience catching a lame knuckler would be better than no experience at all with the pitch. Some guys can throw the pitch with good action, but they just can't hit the zone enough to be an effective professional knuckleballer.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 9th best war in all of baseball for a shortstop at 3.3 wins above replacement. And it still doesn't explain why you said he provides barely average offense when in reality he provides top end offense from his position. Why cant you either provide something to back up that statement or admit you were wrong? I think WAR overrates Reyes as his defense is probably a lot worse than UZR says it is. If you went by DRS instead of UZR last year for instance Reyes loses a win of value. Don't get me wrong I still think Reyes is a good player but his defense last year was just awful. Even the small things like catching relay throws and SB attempts he was just terrible, which do add up.

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Club option next year should be picked up if he has a similar season this year to the last 2. I disagree. We've got Hutch and Stroman, Sanchez and Norris will be a year more seasoned, Osuna and others will likely be in AAA, and the SP free agent crop is very good next offseason. Dickey can be replaced by a younger, better pitcher for a slightly higher salary.

There are many teams who would trade an asset for Dickey at 12 million. Even then I like the durable 200 innings and stability he provides. If you believe in the Dickey effect he is worth over 3 Wins per season which for 12 million on a one year contract is a huge bargain.

True, but a good young pitcher making pre-arb salary is an even bigger bargain and allows you to use the $$ for other needs (like 2B).

If Dickey is still throwing 220 innings of league average or better performance, then the Jays would be foolish not to pick up the option. Young pitchers are not trust worthy, and it gets even more unpredictable if you plan to fill your entire rotation with them. It's not like the Jays will reallocate his $12m to one of the free agent starting pitchers. I'd keep Dickey and offer Buehrle the QO. Again, assuming both have typical seasons for them. You can always trade them.

Laika Community Moderator Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Why? Dickey is gone after this year. Unless his skill really declines this year, they'll need his 200 innings so the $11M will be a no-brainer. Buehrle will be gone. But it's not even only about next year. It would be nice to have a depth catcher in the system this season who can catch Dickey and play solid D in all other aspects.

It's hard to judge him to be honest, he's working on being average hitter and all his coaches are asking him to do is bunt or sacrifice himself, when he does that (or try to) then people complain that he can't hit.

But we'd complain way less if he were able to reliably drop down a bunt. Even if his only role ever as a hitter would be to bunt, he still can't even do that. There'd be way less hate if he had a solid base of minor fundamental abilities, but as it stands he's just a hope and a prayer during every PA.

You know i did put Fatcow to shame once i started doing them last year during that epic streak.
